I voted for the first one. Phil Collins is a great drummer, and a good songwriter as well.

Phil Collins is an excellent drummer.  I love listening to his drumming on Genesis's "The Way We Walk."  But he is not so amazing, and I don't like any of his solo work....... and i hear he is a prick.

That said, Phil rules.  I haven't really checked out his solo stuff, but his work with Genesis is amazing.

Obviously, a monster in the world of drumming, and progressive music. Also a great songwriter, and a hell of an ear for pop music...sure, a lot of his stuff is as soft as cream cheese, but it's still very well written

I think he's great.  He is the reason why I took up drumming when I was a kid.  A great drummer (early Genesis, Brand X) and one hell of a good songwriter.  He plays a variety of instruments, has a great voice, and puts on one hell of a show.  I voted for the first option because he can do just about anything and 90% of the time he does it really well.
 
 
That and he is the spitting image of my grandfather when he was younger.

I voted good because although I wouldn't call him a genius, his work  with GEnesis is incredible.  I've been collecting a lot of boots from the late 70s lately and I really think it's my favorite era of the band.  Phil was such an amazingly funny and talented showman.  HE could be just as dramatic as Peter on stage, just without all the silly costumes

danceofmaternity, I met phil twice and he is one of the most amazing people i've ever met, he doesn't make u feel like he's higher than u and he is so caring and gentle, SO CARING and so gentle....he was such a great guy

Totally mixed feelings about the guy.  Spent many hours circa 1980-96 devouring every crumb of his work... obviously the Genesis and Brand X are prime rib. 
 
He has notable moments with others artists, too: I love him on Steve Hackett's "Ace of Wands", Lancaster & Lumley's "Marscape", playing Uncle Ernie in some long ago live "Tommy" performance, Peter Gabriel's "Intruder", Eno's "No One Receiving"...  
 
"Face Value" and "Hello I Must Be Going" are the *only* solo albums I find musically compelling and enjoyable.  After that,

Baldrick, what begins with "Come here" and ends with "Ow"?

also, danceofmaternity, if he's SUCH A PRICK, why did the media call him Mr. Nice Guy from 1994-1998 just about everytime u saw him in the paper (When they weren't making fun of him)....He gives endless amounts of money away to charity and even people who come to his house (watch interviews)

Dont call him a prick, he's probably the complete opposite of what a prick it....

DOM might be referring to Collins esquire's less-than-stellar reviews on his parenting skills, as delivered by the likes of his son Simon & adopted daughter Joely (if their recent published remarks are any indication).
 
To be fair however, this thread is supposed to be about his music & not his albeit fawked private affairs.

I guess I have no problem believing he was a lousy father because when you think about it, he was on the road constantly for the better part of 30 years    But I'm certain he's trying to make up for it now with this semi-retirement he's doing.

A genius in the world of music?  Probably not.  But, I like his work with Genesis and his solo stuff from the '80s.

Saw Phil with Genesis in 86 and by himself in 90. One of my friends worked at FAO Schwartz in the Hollywood area. He delivered stuff to celebrities homes in Malibu. He always went to Phil's house around 91 I think it was. Phil liked his work and helping him with the toys he was looking for so much that he would just walk in to the store and just say "Is Bryon here?".

Absolutely.  He is a remarkably talented man, and his work in Genesis was positively excellent.

Phil is not a prick!  In fact, one of the nicest celebs I've met.  Don Henley, now there's a prick.
 
Phil does it all.  One of my biggest influences and such an underrated drummer.  Just watch the Genesis 1976 show when Phil plays with Bill Bruford.  He kicks Bill's ass all over the place.  Of course, he knows better than to fuck with Chester Thompson.  All in all, Phil is one of the most influential and important people in my life musically.

As for his work - his drumming from 1971-1981 is absolutely excellent. You won't find a drummer who disagrees. His singing is top notch and his performing/stage presence are fantastic. His later solo material gets softer and more 'love song'-y. But hey, he's in his fifties now, and he's still a natural at writing well crafted songs. His Both Sides album from '93 is perhaps his best, where he plays ALL the instruments. He's a hell of a talent.

I have all of his solo stuff up to Both Sides and my favorite is probably ...But Seriously.  I haven't listened to Both Sides in years and it never did hit me, so maybe I'll have to give that one a spin sometime soon.

In my opinion one of the best singer, song writer, musician combos in modern music.

I don't know if you would put him in the "genius" category, but he is awesome. Great drummer to watch, fantastic voice. He must be doing something right b/c he is def one of those artists that seems to have stood the test of time.

True- his falling out with Simon & Joely was sensationalized by Ray Coleman in his "bio" of Phil; his falling out with Jill Collins was sensationalized by the British press... it's really none of our business to measure the quality or quantity of any celebrity's interpersonal skills.
 
The music, however, is fair game.

I personally love Phil.  Don't know if I would classify him as a musical genius, but I have always enjoyed his music greatly.

 Phil Collins is one of the main reasons I ever picked up a pair of sticks. He is an amazing player, an incredibly gifted songwriter and singer, and he puts on a hell of a live show. I saw him for the first time last year in Bercy, Paris (The night that was filmed for the "Final farewell tour" DVD) , and it was such a great gig. His work with Genesis, Brand-X, Steve Hackett, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, and his solo work is all great. (And He played with Tommi Iommi & Ozzy Osbourne playing "Paranoid" at the Queen's Golden Jubilee concert \m/)
I dont really give a shit about the stories we hear about his social life, for me its all about the music & Phil knows how to deliver great, great music, a truly brilliant musician

Well, Obviously he's a genius !!, as a drummer with Genesis, as a songwriter, as a singer... but I think that in his solo career he might focus to Adult Rock, I mean, that's not bad, I like some of his solo songs, but there's no Prog left of him now...
