BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK Appreciation thread - Monday, March 07, 2005 6:46 AM
This is one of THE great albums of the 90's. I liked the Chilis starting with Mother's Milk but when this album hit the streets, I was blown away. I don't think they ever topped this one, I think this will prove to be the centerpiece of their career.

Having recently read Anthony Keidis' book "Scar Tissue" (a fascinating read - highly recommended!), I have been in a Chilis mood lately - and this is the album that delivers for me every time. There isn't a skipper on this one (and it's a long album!), and I love the variety, the playing and the production. Chad kicks ass on this album! Favorite tracks: "Breaking The Girl", "The Power Of Equality", "The Greeting Song" and the classic "Sir Psycho Sexy", which suddenly turns into a gorgeous instrumental with bluesy guitar and mellotron(!) of all things.

An absolute classic. I recommend it to all of you - and to those of you who already know how cool this album is: revisit!

Deffinitely, there is something in it that everyone can agree on. I have found myself putting the CD in at work and having everyone enjoy it more than once. My favorite tracks would have to either be Blood Sugar Sex Magik or Naked in the Rain.

I'll bite.

Great album all around, probably the best album the Chilli Peppers put out.

The first album I really 'loved'

Years later I still know it word for word, even when I haven't listened to it for 2 years I'll still throw it on and know all the changes and lyrics. For me, this album is magical. It was before I learned any theory, and the 'magic' of music was still there.

My favs: I Could Have Lied, Breaking the Girl, Sir Psycho Sexy, Under the Bridge, Apache Rose Peacock..

Fuck, the whole album owns.

One of my favs of all time!!
To me there is something special about the song order. If tried to listen to it on shuffle or random, but it doesnt flow. Very magical album for sure.

Great album. It blew me away for a good year. Coming out of the very unfunky time it did, it was so radical sounding. Looking back I'd say it was super influential.

This is one of the first albums I learned on bass from front to back. Suck my Kiss is still a favorite for open mike nights.

I've owned probably 4 or 5 copies of it due to loss, scratching, lending etc, and I have no qualms about buying it 5 more times if need be.

Auto-signatures are a sign of weakness.

<-----------------See Nick

One of my favourite albums of all time... I learned to play drums listening to that album. There is always something new that I didn't hear before... Good for a thousand listens at least.

Fav tracks are: Naked in the Rain (that bass solo, although short, is awesome), The Greeting Song, My Lovely Man, If You have to Ask... Shit, I love em all!

RHCP is definately one of my favourite bands of all time... Although I think they started to slip with One Hot Minute, and never quite recovered (despite John Frusciante re-joining the band). Just my 2 cents, but BSSM > Everything after.

Still love them though! If I hadn't already been playing drums when I first heard that album, I definately would have picked up the Bass.

Great Thread!

Love this album. This was during my brief "Alternative Period". I used to listen to Peppers, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden.

Chili Peppers are the only band I still listen to from that period.

Plus, Chad used to be in a band here in Detroit called Toby Redd and my band used to open for them all the time. Soooooo, of course I have to listen to the Chilis and support the man!

I love the Chili Pepper sound. Great Band!

Totally! I just got this album a couple of months ago, and I totally love it! It's sad that they will probably never top it.

It's simply RHCP at their best. I love all the funky (My Lovely Man rules!) songs and the whole album really never gets old.

Well, I think it's pretty obvious that I love them...

BSSM is the album that made me discover the RHCP.
Great opus. My favorite song of all time is 'Suck My Kiss'.
All the songs are great. It's even better once you've seen the 'Funky Monks' DVD, which is the recording of BSSM, because you see that they really use everything they can to get great sounds and it's really fun to watch.

'My Lovely Man' was written for Hillel Slovak, who was their first guitar player and who died from an OD in 1988.

John Frusciante is a fantastic guitar player and he's juste released a chain of 6 albums in 6 months. I have to admit I don't love them all, but the last one, 'Curtains', is for me an acoustic wonder.

One of greatest albums of the 90's, in my opinion. Different from what i use to listen (heavy & prog) but i really love it.

I love 'one hot minute' and 'californication' too but but i don't like their last album.

This is an awesome masterpiece though.

The title track is excellent, as is 80% of this disc. The only thing I don't really like are some of the lyrics, they're childish even by Anthony Keidis' (sp?) standards. The music is outstanding though.

BSSM is so outdated. I predict it'll sound like dust in 20 years.

You know it's a perfect album when the leftovers stand on their own as well. The "making of" video "Funky Monks" is great as well.

I can't believe how time goes so fast... the tour behind this album had openers Pearl Jam (10) and The Smashing Pumpkins (Gish).

I've never seen the Funky Monks video. Do they show any of the recording or rehearsing of "Sir Psycho Sexy"? (Particularly the ending part)

Late answer, but yeah they do.
It's the video of the recording of BSSM, so you pretty much have all the songs. Even the non LP tracks, like 'Soul To Squeeze' or 'Sikamikanico'.

Awesome album! Very interesting blend of styles and really good flow between songs. If You Have To Ask is probably my favorite Chili Peppers song, along with I could Gave Lied, Mellowship Slinky, Give It Away, and Sir Psycho Sexy
