Ever hear music in your dreams?
-
Sunday, February 27, 2005 1:05 PM
I guess that most people here are musicians and thus, most have heard music in their dreams. However, I am decidedly not a musician, and have never heard music in my dreams before. However, last night, I had a dream, and in it, I heard music. First, it was just a song that I've been listening to a lot lately (Heavy Things by Phish), but then, in my dream, I went to the next song, and it was a classical piece I had never heard before. I can sort of still remember it; it was very sad sounding and majestic. It was truly beautiful, but what really bakes my noodle is that it means my mind made that. Either that or it was a song I had heard before and forgot about, and it was lodged in my subconscious. Craziness I tell you

I've heard music in my dreams before. I am sort of a musician... well a fledgling, I've been playing guitar for about 1 1/2 years now. But some pieces I've never heard before and some I have (Endless Sacrifice was one and so was Stream of Consiousness)

I have made up songs in my dreams but can't remember for the life of me how they went when I have woken up.

I can only think of one instance where I have heard music in a dream. I was on this theme park ride that was kind of horror ride/walkthrough that reminded me of The Nightmare Before Christmas(the artistic elements, like the character design). The music that was playing during the ride was TOOL, from the Undertow record. This was a fucking crazy, creepy, and awesome dream.

I've had music related dreams all the time. Most of them have been either Marillion, DT, or DMB-related. I think my subconscious has written two Marillion albums, a DT album, and performed a 2.5 hour DMB show with new tunes that I can't remember, but they were sweet tunes. According to one dream I had, Queensryche wrote an album between Promised Land and Hear in the Now Frontier that was amazing, like a cross between Rage for Order, Mindcrime, and Promised Land, with an 11-minute song that contained a beautiful DeGarmo solo section. If only I could record this stuff.

A couple of years ago when I had the flu and I felt really shitty I was listening to Transatlantic - Bridge Across Forever. Well.. after listening to a couple of songs I started to feel really relaxed and in the middle of BAF(the song) I drifted off to sleep and suddenly I started hearing a full-band version of the song in my dream. There were no visuals to go with the music it was some sort of "audio dream" if that makes any sense. I still have a faint memory of what it sounded like. Good stuff!

Yea I hear music in my sleep. Sometimes I'll fall asleep while listening to music and I hear the music in my dream and it becomes a part of it. But my mind like changes the music around for some reason, it's weird I can't explain it.

I hear music in my dreams all the time. You know what's weird too? sometimes, it'll be a song you haven't heard in a VERY long time, but it sounds EXACTLY like your listening to a cd, and sometimes I wake up while the song is "playing" and immediately think how crazy it is that the mind can remember something so acutely.

Few and far between times does my mind make up music. I can't remember any of it but it's sooooooooooooooooooooooooo beautiful and perfect when my mind just makes up music in my dreams...I wish I could remember it...

I had a dream recently that I was the new drummer for Pearl Jam..... somewhere along the line of the concert, Pearl Jam changed to AIC then Soundgarden, then back to Pearl Jam... I remember that I knew all the songs really well, but the end of the dream was Eddie Vedder yelling at me because I didn't know the cover song they wanted to do for an encore.... weird stuff.....

I once heard Arcturus in my dream. It wasn't actually Arcturus, but it kicked ass. I still haven't found any music that sounds quite like it to this day, and for that I'm pissed. But it did inspire me to actually listen to Arcturus for the first time, and for that I'm thankful. A bittersweet dream now that I look back on it.

I constantly have original music in my dreams (as in, music my mind made up). The thing is, it's always this completely awesome stuff (stuff I could never think of when I was awake), but I can never remember it when I wake up. The only thing I remember is that it was awesome. That also sometimes happens when I am just about to fall asleep, and am in that place between being awake and being asleep. I wish I could remember the songs.

One time I dreamed I was onstage with either the UNION or the 90125 version of YES. it's been a while. I don't remember. I think it was shortly before or after seeing them in concert a few years ago. I wasn't playing music. It was more like I won a contest to be with them on stage.

When I used to smoke pot (less than 10 times in my life, and never again), I used to come up with like symphonies.. I mean like full blown, intricate pieces of music with strings, woodwinds, etc. Then again, looking back it was probly just an already made symphony, just me remembering it and being too high to realize it was just Bach or something.....

I had one of those "listening to the song and fall asleep" dreams about 10 years ago, it was amazing. Genesis' "The Brazilian" was playing on my walkman headphones, (I had long fallen asleep at this point) and I dreamt that I was saving a girl from an attacker on a cliff edge, and he & I fought an epic battle (I know this sounds ridiculous but it freaked the hell out of me at the time). Towards the end climax of the song, the cliff edge broke and all three of us fell to our deaths, but in slow motion like you were watching it happen in a movie. Just freakin' biZARRE.

I have heard amazing songs that ive never heard before in dreams. I wish I could remember...... I do remember one where I was in the auditorium in my elementary school watching my friend and my current singer perform with my drummer on stage. I was playing guitar with my mind. Whatever melody I thought of I could hear....strange. Anyway, I "played" this evil riff I had and then it went into something amazing and my friend and singer sang over it. What was it!!!!!!????

I hear music in my dreams all the time, though I usually wake up mid-dream and find out that it was playing on my radio. Never sleep without music.

I was soo blown one time. When I got done smoking I fell asleep and I heard smoke on the water playing. It was kinda like "smoke on the water a fire in my lungs....." Trippy as hell!

I usually have my playlist going on my computer while I sleep, so quite often I'll find myself dreaming that I am singing these songs or hearing them or one of my friends is singing them...It's kinda weird, especially since it's usually DT songs that not many of my friends know.

Ever hear music in your dreams? All the damn time. I wish I could remember the music I hear in my dreams, cuz I'd probably have a recording contract right now.

I once had a dream where I heard a guitar riff from my band which had no keyboards behind it, but in the dream there were keyboards. Later that week at band practice, I remembered the dream and then we had a new riff for the band. When I told David where I got the riff from, he was like "Wow"...lol Musically Ryan

After playing piano seriously for eight years, I developed perfect pitch, so If i can hear something in a dream, I may very well spend 3 to 4 AM writing it down. It is usually some very dissonant whole toneish stuff though

one time my KS heard a drumline cadence in his dream and he remembered how it went when he woke up and he and I played it. Also I (RTG) heard the Danny Elfman theme from Edward Scissorhands, it was sweet. I love that song.

Steve Vai wrote "Love Secrets" based on music he heard in a dream. He said it was the most amazing music he's ever heard, and that he didn't even come close to recreating the magic of it.

Over a year ago I had I dream that I was hearing a new Sleepytime Gorilla Museum song on the radio while I was driving and it was amazing. I then described it to a friend as a mix between old Sleepytime, TOOL, and a touch of Malice Mizer. Surprisingly, now that the new album is out, some of the material is like that. Just last week I had a dream that Danny Carey had to stay on campus and I offered that he stay in my room. We traded a lot of music (I got him into Opeth) and he played me some new TOOL clips. The new material he played for me was mind blowing.

I have woken up crying on more than one occasion because the music I heard in my dreams was so beautiful. Of course, I couldn't remember it. I wonder if learning lucid dreaming techniques would help you to remember music you hear in your dreams.
