See, this is why I play guitar, insiration just sounds horribly painfull.

Please ignore the guitarist and continue with your regulairly scheduled drum discussion.

Here's what I was using when I started with my new band last November...

http://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/photo.asp?photoid=35&asortType=5&apage=1

The only thing I have changed is I removed the 12" Zildjian China and replaced it with a second ride... B8 line. It's not a great main ride, but it's so shimmery and wet that I use it frequently for more psychedelic stuff where it fits beautifully...

Note also, I don't use all my gear at once, I only use what I need...

I can't afford octobarns. But I love the squishy tone they produce upon striking.

You guys are gonna be jealous. I got this baby as a shell pack for $60 from the drummer of my band. Oh yeah, and its an amazingly good kit.

Groove Percussion (have no idea what model it is)
22 bass
13 tom
14 tom
16 floor tom
14 piccolo snare

Suprisingly I have a really great sound coming out of the bass drum & snare right now. And yeah, my lugs keep breaking so much to the point where the 2 rack toms & the floor toms only have top heads on and one of the toms has a broken lug on the top head. However, I can't find replacement lugs anywhere because they're really cheap and crappy and also I just do drums on the side as I'm a guitarist so I'm not gonna pay $200 to buy new lugs for the entire crappy kit & redrill...

17" Sabian B8 crash
14" Sabian B8 hihats
20" Zildjian ride

Picked up the ride used for only $35, not a bad deal for a beginner.

Hardware:
Pulse Pro DB pedal
Pacific Throne
Pacific Straight Cymbal Stand
Pacific Hihat Stand
Groove Percussion Boom Cymbal Stand

The Pulse Pro pedal is actually really great for only $80, I have no regrets going with that. The other stuff is alright, you get what you pay for.

Yeah, so I was definitely going for the lowest cost possible, and its decent. I'm actually pretty pleased with everything but the rack & floor toms because they sound like trash, probably because I only have one head on each of them.

So, if you guys have any suggestions for a cheaper solution to replacing the lugs or something, that would be great because I wish I could go back to the normal 2 heads setup...

At $60 I'd definitely consider drilling new holes and outfitting with great lugs; using the shells to support a much better hardware setup.

The thing is though I priced out how many lugs I'd need and the lowest I could find was $150 for them plus then I need to obtain the necessary stuff to drill & the shells probably are pretty crappy anyway because it is after all a cheap Groove Percussion set...so is it still really worth it? Plus, I'm probably going to be obtaining a Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier half-stack next month or so and that'll be about $1200 so I'm on a pretty tight budget...I was contemplating perhaps even within a few months just buying new shells & dealing with my hardware.

My Drums
They have changed slightly with the addition of a 13" tom on my left. Everything else is pretty much the same.

Well, I'm not so familiar with Groove Percussion products so I can't tell you any sort of worth... nor can I tell you what type of drummer or drum sound you want. As a non-metal drummer, I know that I need the full tonal qualities out of my toms. If you're pursuing metal and/or punk music, where you tune your floor tom to mud (no offense meant by this remark, when I was playing heavier music, this was my floor tom tuning of choice), you may consider ripping the bottom lugs off the floor and using them to reoutfit the shoddy ones on the toms. I assume that'll give you an extra 8, and you'll be able to tune the rack toms better and not loose much on the floor tom). If the shells are decent and not that crappy pasteboard stuff that you see in lower end kits, I'd say it's very possible that you'd want to relug your kit. Groove may be cheap because they use cheap hardware but actually have decent shells to sell you on in the showroom...

ebay may also be a good resource for lugs.

First of all, thanks for the advice man, I appreciate it. As for my style, I'd say the main stuff I would play would be heavy rock or metal. However, that doesn't necessarily mean I want really insanely dead sounding drums. In fact, thats why I hate my toms right now, they sound really bland and dead. My bass drum I love because its got this cannon-like punch to it and my snare is pretty acceptable as well, I have it really tight. As for the floor tom, I already removed the bottom lugs from it, so unfortunately I'm at the very end. Like I said, its to the point where none of the bottom lugs exist & actually on my smaller rack tom one of the lugs is missing on the top head but I have it tuned extra tight to compensate. The only thing I have both heads on aside from the snare is the bass drum but I don't want to mess with that because I really like the sound I'm getting out of it now considering how cheap it is. And as for the shells, I really can't tell if they're decent or not because I'm not a real drummer & I'm just teaching myself to play. However, I can tell you that the covering on the outside seems kinda cheap. I just looked on Samash's website, and I think this is probably the kit with the shells I have:

Groove Percussion

So I'm not sure. And again, thanks for the help, I appreciate it a lot, because I will readily admit I don't know all that much about drums.

Wood kick hoops, eh? Sweet. Well, there's 3 directions this conversation can go, assuming you don't want to look around on ebay (which would be highly suggested seeing as how there's ten lugs there on the first page for $2).

(a) You can consider moving to a four piece (highly recommended by me at any rate, I played many years on a 4 piece).

(b) You can think about heads. Pre-tuned heads may be an option... I've never used these... just throwing it out there... but if they're pretuned, I'm assuming you just have to use the lugs as fasteners are opposed to tensioning agents, in which case 4 lugs per drum may *actually* be an option, and breaking lugs from tightening becomes less of a permanent issue. I'd ask at your local drum store about using tensioned heads on a drum-kit that isn't designed to fit them.

(c) You should think about new heads at any rate if your drums are sounding flat. Maybe put the crap batter lug on your floor as this will be your least tensioned head, and hook up some ambassador or emperor skins on the drums, so you'll pull more tone out.

Don't get me wrong, I'm actually thinking ebay is a very good deal and I'm definitely interested, I'm just exploring my options. As for heads, right now I have some kind of Attack heads that were only like $20 for an entire set including bass drum. I was actually going to put up the money for Emperors at the time but hte store didn't have them so I went with the cheapest route. These heads are about 6 months old and have no dents in them whatsoever. However, I understand that they probably aren't the best tonally either so that doesn't mean anything. Right now, I think I might end up going the ebay route & then I'd have to buy new heads because I saved the old ones but they're absolutely maimed & hideous...the only fear I have is if I'm drilling these new holes and the drum cracks or something, won't I be totally screwed?

too lazy to type it all out, but I play Ludwig, Pearl, and I have a 9 piece vintage set of Rodgers, I love those drums. I use all Sabian cymbals, except for Zildjians w/ the Rodgers. I have thought about selling the Pearls and Ludwigs and getting a set of Tamas. But that will probably be on down the road. I use Remo heads and ProMark sticks. My hardware is all of the drum kit's makers, except my double pedals are DW.

As far as my kit goes (well, my new kit, anyway) here it is:

The Software
Drums:
5 pc. Pearl Session Maple + 14" Pearl Free-Floating Maple Snare + 14" Pearl Export Steel Snare (on left side)
It's set up as two rack toms, two hanging floor toms, and two snares, Thomas Lang Style
Cymbals:
I have like twenty good cymbals, so I'll list what's currently on my kit:
2 X 14" Meinl Thomas Lang Signature Filter Chinas
16" Meinl Thomas Lang Signature Synthetix Crash
17" Meinl Thomas Lang Signature Kompressor Crash
18" Meinl Thomas Lang Signature Signal Crash / Klub Ride
18" Zildjian A Custom Crash
16" Zildjian A Paperthin Crash
10" Zildjian A Custom Splash
20" Zildjian K Custom Flat Top Ride
18" Wuhan China (upside-down, of course)
22" Paiste Dark Energy Ride (Mark II)
14" Paiste Dark Energy Hi-Hats
14" Camber Cutting Edge Medium Hi-Hats
A cowbell of unknown brand (not a cymbal, so sue me)

The Hardware
I have the three sided Pearl ICON rack with the square tubing. It's wonderful. I strongly suggest it for you guys out there with larger kits.
A billion clamps, tom mounts/holders, cymbal boom arms, etc.
I use Sonor Pedals, in fact I got these from the Miami Thomas Lang Clinic, after he used 'em. They are the Giant Step double pedals (strap drive, but interchangable with a double-chain, which was included) and 400 series hi-hat stand. I also currently have two hi-hats set up on either side of my bass pedals, that is Pearl Eliminator series ( I'm using my Eliminator double pedal at my guitarist's house) and I must add that the Sonor Pedals feel better to me than any other pedal I have tried, which is almost all of them (Axis, Pearl, Tama, Mapex, Ludwig, etc. etc.)
must...practice...more....
