Norwegian Black Metallers GORGOROTH Face Polish Criminal Probe - Feb. 3, 2004

A prosecutor in Poland has launched an investigation into whether a concert by the black metal band GORGOROTH has breached the country's law protecting religion. The Norwegian band are suspected of having sent a hateful and offensive message with their performance Sunday (Feb. 1) at the Krakow studios of Polish Television.

The show, which was to be filmed for an upcoming DVD, featured two naked women (with hoods over their heads) and one naked man, all of them "crucified" and covered in sheep blood, a number of sheep heads on spikes and sheep entrails thrown all over the stage, as well as approximately 80 liters of fresh sheep blood. During the performance, which was attended by an audience of 300, one of the models reportedly fainted from the lack of oxygen. The TV show's producers, who were not briefed in advance about the nature of the concert, were said to "shocked" by the activities on stage. The manager of the studio, Andrzej Jeziorek, notified the police and the recorded footage was confiscated by the authorities as evidence of a possible crime.

The TV crew, who had filmed various metal performances before (including those by CANNIBAL CORPSE, CHILDREN OF BODOM and ANATHEMA, among others), claimed in the Polish media that they had never seen anything quite as "horrific" as GORGOROTH's live show. "We were not repulsed, we were terrified!" the camera operators were quoted as saying by the Polish newspapers.

The concert promoters reportedly defended themselves by saying that all the people who came to watch the show were satisfied and none of them complained about having had their religious beliefs offended in any way.

Just one minor thing about Gorgoroth:

You know how people in Norway are supposed to be very civilized and mellow, right?? Well, Gaahl, the singer for Gorgoroth, got arrested in 2002 for EXTREME VIOLENCE. Apparently he got in a bar fight. What would constitute extreme violence in such a context??? One can't help but wonder...

But yes, these guys definitely do not fuck around. I, for one, will be buying this DVD as soon as it comes out!

Report: GORGOROTH Face Two Years In Polish Prison After Causing 'Religious Offense' - Feb. 4, 2004

Norwegian black metal band GORGOROTH are being investigated in Poland for causing religious offense after a show that included dozens of sheep heads on stakes, a literal blood bath and a naked, crucified woman, newspaper Aftenposten reports.

The concert in Krakow was broadcast by state TV station TVP and the resulting scandal was the center of attention in Polish media, according to Aftenposten. The band are now being investigated for causing religious offense, which is punishable by up to two years in prison.

The police are also considering an investigation of cruelty to animals.

"On stage there was blood everywhere. About ten decapitated sheep heads and naked people, alive, on large crosses," TVP director Andrzej Jeziorek told newspaper VG. "Everyone was painted with 100 liters of sheep blood. Also there were Satanist symbols everywhere. One of the hanging female models fainted and an ambulance had to be called,".

Jeziorek said that the TVP staff were shocked and reported the show to police.

"This kind of thing should happen on state TV and especially not in Krakow, which is the Pope's city," Jeziorek said. Jeziorek wanted to halt the concert but feared a riot from enthusiastic, bloodied fans who had paid for tickets.

The band were recording a concert DVD and had promised fans a very special show in Poland, and had rigged the stage behind curtains to keep the content secret.

Recent troubles with sects and Satanist groups have made the issue especially sensitive in Poland.

I read a Gorgoroth interview in Terrorizer a while back. I remember consistently laughing. Things like "Satan knows no mercy!". Yeah, well, I believe that Satan exists, and that kind of stuff just makes me WET myself. It's so EEEEEVIL, kVlt and tr00....it makes me wanna PEE....

Even though I'm not really crazy about their music (well, I don't despise it as I once did, so that could be a good sign - or not), I love these black metal bands' antics. Highly entertaining stuff.

I don't know what's more laughable, the band's behaviour or that of the Polish police. So they had someone naked up on a cross - big f'n deal. But I guess if you desperately WANT to be offended, you'll always find a reason.

Maybe it would be wise to investigate the possibility that Mad Cow Disease can transfer from DVD to human beings....

 

I personably would be offended by having to watch animal intestins lying around in its blood on a stage. Have some decensy towards animal life.

I don't understand the appeal of this even though it's the most metal of the metal. But could you imagine what would happen if that concert took place here on north america? shit it would be chaos i tell you, they would end up going to court for pissing off Tipper Gore with their vulgar display of evilness. while the parents would leave eminem and marilyn manson alone for forcing children to do bad things through their music and turn all the attention on the the most metal band of all GORGOROTH!!!!

For those of you who picked apart Lord of the Rings, you'll know that Gorgoroth is actually a plain in Mordor or something. Wonder what Tolkien would think.

And yes, the animal rights issue offends me the most here. By the way, Joto: is Hellhammer in that band? I remember seeing a promo shot of him wearing a Gorgoroth shirt on Arcturus' "Aspera..." album. I'm hoping he doesn't get thrown in jail, shit.

Looking at this issue from the Polish perspective cracks me up - the whole thing with offending religious beliefs was introduced into the Polish law system as a means of censorship. Quite recently one of Polish artists has been sentenced on the basis of that provision. This has forced many art gallery owners to suspend exhibitions which they feared might get them into trouble.

Nonetheless, I expect some turmoil in Poland over that, with the unfortunate result being probably removing Poland from tour lists. As far as possible animal right abuse, the guy who organized the concert said the sheep heads were bought at a slaughterhouse. No real blood was used, only a substance resembling blood.
