not too big of a A7X fan, but I'm honestly digging this!

And I don't think it's just because Mike's on it either!

Wait, wait, so the Rev dies and now Portnoy is filling in on A7X's new album?

Where the fuck have I been?

Jesus.....

Anywho, sounds good man.  A7X and Portnoy are two great tastes that will taste great together.

You must have been under a rock man! It's been all over the forum and the web! He's not only on the album paying tribute to The Rev, but he's touring with A7X for the remainder of 2010.

I must say, from that little sound clip, he NAILED the sound the Rev always used. Glad to hear he kept true to the A7X style drumming.

I was never really keen on this release until I heard that sample. This album will rock!

If I didn't know that was Mike, I would have sworn it was The Rev. Exactly the same sound and feel. On ya Mike!

Well it definitely sounds like Mike Portnoy drumming for Avenged Sevenfold.  Even if I didn't know it was Mike I would have guessed as much if I had heard this clip.  I'm not a huge A7X fan, so I'll withhold judgement on the song until I hear the whole thing.

Was it the ride that Mike kept from the Rev's kit? Because it sure sounds like it.

Just thought I should let you all know that (since many comments have been made about "MP's style") The Rev wrote out all the drum parts (and I believe demoed them too) and Mike just went in and played them (obviously with his own feel, but, whatever haha)  So, I'm pretty sure that all of the beats and fills were Jimmy's own (though he was *deeply* influenced by Mike as he said in interviews many many times.

Maybe Mike can fill us in with details after the album comes out.

I have never heard a song from them but have to admit since MP is playing on it I have to check it out.

I like the sample, what is a good album to start with if I'd like to check these guys out before the new album comes out??

One thing is, I hope people don't start loving A7X only because Mr. Portnoy plays on the album....I hope that his playing drums opens up new minds to the music and I hope those minds love the band for what they truly are....great musicians.

I personally would start with their latest self titled released and work backwards.

Avenged Sevenfold
City Of Evil
Waking The Fallen
Sounding the Seventh Trumpet

StST is my least favorite of the A7X albums because its a lot of screaming punk stuff, but with a lot of different influences. But still not my style.

WTF is half screaming and half singing, but the screaming is very tasteful and the songs are more well written and you can tell the band is maturing at this point.

CoE is when I joined the A7X family. Great mix of rock and metal. No screaming in this one because M. Shadows blew out his vocals, but I've also heard it was his choice to not scream on this album. This is the album that busted them through the door with Bat Country, Seize The Day, and The Beast and the Harlot. A lot of other great songs on there too like Blinded in Chains and Burn It Down.

Their self titled release is a MONSTER of an album. One of the few albums in which I have every song from on my 8 gig iTouch. I never skip a song because I'm "not feelin it." Critical Acclaim, Almost Easy, Scream, and Afterlife are the best 4 lead off songs, to me, since Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYZ, and Limelight. This album rules. The pace is brought down, but it gives a lot more room for the songs to breath. Kinda... Metallica black album in a ways.

I agree with you COMPLETELY about the self titled.  Absolutely flawless and incredible.

But fyi Shadows never blew out his vocals. He had surgery to correct a strained chord but thats it, and it's not the reason he stopped screaming.  He did it because he wanted to.  But he is also screaming again.

Funny that you compare it to Metallica Black Album... because didn't M Shadows compare it to that before it was released?

I will third that.  Self titled is awsome in every way.  Best song from that album, IMO, is "Lost" (which they orginally called "fast melodic".  Waken the Fallen and City of Evil are both great too.  Waken the Fallen has some spectacular melodies and changes pace frequently which really put it over the top.  But the production really started kicking in for City of Evil and the Self Titled (Not a bad thing at all).

The song actually sounds INCREDIBLE (I say that as unbiased as I can be in respect to MP's involvement). I've listened to it many, many times. Can't wait for this album!

Very, very cool. That's most definitely MP's playing. Even with The Rev being very influenced by MP, and MP trying to imitate The Rev on this album, it's pretty unmistakable.

I will definitely pick this up. It's hard to hear this without The Rev, but I expect I'll get over that fact and be able to enjoy the album once it's out. I really hope they'll get a permanent replacement soon and will be able to keep creating and playing like they have been so far.

Hard to get anything significant from 30 seconds.

It will be interesting to see what happens when this album is released. A7X was already a good selling band that received decent FM radio
exposure.  I believe the "MP factor" will add sales and possibly this baby could land at #1.

I'm quite anxious to hear it.

I'm wondering about any sort of Rev tribute special edition of the CD.  It would be interesting if they had a DVD tribute to him along with maybe some making of with MP.  It would also be very cool if they released the demo versions of all the songs since some of them apparently feature the Rev playing every instrument (or close to it).

Funny you mention that, as a friend and I were talking about that just yesterday.  From what I heard, Jimmy pretty much demoed all of the songs that he wrote himself.  And (also, this is just "the vibe" I got from what I heard) it seems as though he wrote nearly half the album's worth of songs, maybe more.  The Rev was an incredible creative force.  His versions had him playing piano (for the guitar melodies), singing on top of that, with him playing the drums on top of both of those.  His mother also remarked that he sang any additional orchestral/backing vocal part 'live' when he showed off the demos.

Sooo, some *very* awesome insight to the album exists, however, those recordings are **insanely** personal, and knowing how respectful A7X has been of Jimmy's passing, I just couldn't see them "giving out" those demos.  However, do expect a very cool collector's edition of the album with some very cool and informative behind the scenes information, and *maybe* a peek at those demos.
