Even when my favorite Black Sabbath is when Ozzy was in the band, if someone has all the right the claim to be Black Sabbath is Tony Iommy. He's the only and original member who has appeared in all the records with the name "Black Sabbath" in them. For me, the other one whou could claim something about Black Sabbath is not Ozzy. Geezer or Bill maybe. Hell, I think Tony Martin has even more chance to be considered more part of Black Sabbath than Ozzy (he's been with Black Sabbath in their hard times but no one seems to remember the poor guy).

Yes indeed. Iommi kept Sabbath going all those years. He kept plodding along while Ozzy was dealing with his
personal demons and solo albums. I remember going to see Ozzy during The Ultimate Sin tour and he was so
wasted that he could barely stand. He slurred the lyrics, screwed up countless times and was generally a
total embarrasment.  This suit seems like such an obvious money grabbing stunt. It sickens me.
 
Ozzy...go make another reality show and leave the Sab name with the rightful owner.

I personally think it's crap that Ozzy thinks he deserves anything. Tony is the ONLY member to be there throughout it all, compared to Ozzy for only a part of it... and if he really didn't write much music, that makes it even more ridiculous.

I laughed just at reading that. It was never about Ozzy's vocals for me at least. I think he is probably one of the most overrated vocalists out there. Even on his solo work it was always the guitars that made it good. Not his vocals.

My understanding was that since the 2001 (or so) reunions, the name Black Sabbath consisted of only the original 4.  A 'handshake' agreement if you will.  I thought that was the whole reason the current lineup goes by Heaven & Hell - with respect to the other original two members.  This was my understanding, so maybe I am completely off the mark. 

Regardless, Sabbath rules and they will always be my favorite band.  Whatever bs Ozzy/Sharon pulls, Master of Reality is still a kick ass album, and nothing will ever change that.

The Dio-era Sabbath crew changed the name to set expectations amongst the audience. They made the decision to tour as H&H so people coming to the show would not expect to hear classic Ozzy-era Sabbath tunes. As it stands, the Dio era has its own unique identity and deserved its own name that separates it from Black Sabbath. There was nothing legal that forced the name change...

I find myself having to explain to my wife (never particularly a metal fan) whenever the cell phone commercials come on that Ozzy was, at one time, the sort of standard-bearer of all things rebellious, dark, cool, etc. for a certain set of people.  He's just an insult to anyone who ever felt that way about him, now. Granted, the same person who is responsible for this transformation into extreme corny-ness is probably also the reason why Ozzy is even still alive. So, I just occasionally pop on old Sabbath and try to forget about much else since.

Iommi seems like such a stand up  and humble guy, to think he even thanked Ozzy in the linear notes on the new Heaven and Hell CD

Over the years I've come to learn how much of a fraud Ozzy really is, things like how Bob Daisley wrote a ton of the early solo material and they'd shit on him, bring him back, shit on him some more, then erase his legacy.  I'd love to see how much Ozzy truly ever contributed to either Sabbath or even his own solo stuff.

HOWEVER...  If Iommi did try and pull a fast one and really did file as "sole owner," how did he think he would get away with that?  Check out this article in Rolling Stone.  Looks like there's more to it... Iommi is suing Live Nation and could get a windfall, so of course the Osbourne's want in (and probably rightly so)...

I was fucking outraged when I read this. All I know is, it's bull shit. Obviously over the years Ozzy has been more successful than Sabbath without him and he's made an ass load of fucking money. And yet it's still not enough for him. He's got to go after the money that was made from the Dio, Gillan, Hughes, and Martin albums which he doesn't deserve because he had nothing to fucking do with those albums!! I doubt this will happen but if Ozzy somehow ever fucking gained control of Sabbath and started releasing albums under that name I'd never fucking buy them because I know that Tony Iommi IS BLACK SABBATH! I think it's time I tossed all my Ozzy CD's out now. Ozzy boycott all the way!

I still say...Iommi kept the Sabbath banner flying for all those years while Ozzy was off screaming at SHARON to
scoop up the dog shit. I truly believe that has to count for something. If Iommi had walked away after Ozzy left
Sabbath would be no more.
 
In my heart I believe Iommi is totally in the winning position but I'm no lawyer so I have no clue how this will turn

All I know in my heart is this: If ever I saw a Black Sabbath record that did NOT have Tony on guitar, I would disregard it completely as something completely false and different.  The signature of Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi, who still to this day can out-riff any guitar player I can think of.

What is the fucking point of this crap?  Tony isn't even USING the name now.  Shit, this is dealing with things that happened over 2 decades ago.  It's pointless.

I love Sabbath, I love Ozzy, and I love Tony Iommi and everything he has done.  This is really fucking stupid.

Besides, Tony didn't even WANT to keep using the name.  Seventh Star was meant to be an Iommi solo record, the label made him use the name.  That's why it's billed as "Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi."  It was a compromise.

I know I've said this a couple times in this post, but I must once again reiterate:  this is REALLY FUCKING STUPID!!!

There's something fishy going on with this lawsuit. I have to side with Tony Iommi on this. I thought Ozzy was ok with Tony. Tony could have not gone with the trouble of naming the Dio lineup "Heaven And Hell" and just kept the name Black Sabbath. But he seemed like he was trying to do right by Bill and Ozzy by only using the Black Sabbath name now when only the original lineup performs. Now in an unexpected and greedy move, Ozzy does this. Plus, it's pretty bad timing. Couldn't he have done this 20 years ago if he was going to do this lawsuit anyway. I still think Tony would have been on the good side then as he is now. In fact maybe Ozzy shouldn't really be suing. He was the one that made all the bad drug decisions in the late 70s which led to his firing. That kind of trumps Ozzy's reasonings for suing. Plus Black Sabbath had more good albums after Ozzy left than Ozzy did with his solo albums. Tony is the winner in my book.
