Why do dogs do this?????
-
Saturday, April 22, 2006 12:51 AM
My Queensland Heeler Jenny loves to kill gophers, rip them apart, then roll around on them in the dirt...then she smells like a dead animal for days. I've had it! I almost stepped on a gopher skull the other day in the backyard....I just want to throw up! She seems perfectly content to do this for hours. I'm glad she is killing the gophers...but WHY does she have to roll all over the dead carcasses?? Not only does she smell bad, but even after I bathe her 3x she STILL smells bad! WHY DO DOGS LOVE TO DO THIS?

Because they're dogs. And dogs like to do weird things. Trust me. I have 2 little ones, and they're a handfull. But if you're concerned about this, you may want to ask a professional trainer.

I think that they like to get the scent of their kills on them. Almost like a trophy.... so they can brag to other dogs.

My baby Chubby goes through stuffed animals (her "babies") like they're going out of style....I think she's too scared of other animals to actually kill anything but man can she tear the shit out of stuffed animals. She makes quick work of them too, sometimes completely destroying them in under a minute. She does love to play and "cuddle" with the stuffed animal "carcass" after she's "killed" it. She also leaves their "guts" all over the house, on the floor and the couches so maybe this is related to what your dog does.....who knows?

Hmm...come to think of it, I did stop giving her stuffed animals a few months ago, she tears those apart in seconds too...I guess the gophers are just stuffed toys to her. Damn, I wish she would just stick to Nylabones Oh and thanks for all the empathy guys, nice to know my dog is not the only weirdo dog on the forum

I've got a two large dogs on 500 acres, so this is not uncommon to me. We always use to go outside to find "gifts" from the dogs. The dogs smelled horrible too. They would chase everything from gophers to skunks. The gophers weren't so bad once they started going after the skunks. Now that was bad! I had no idea how to stop them from doing that, so I asked my friend who had dogs too. She told me to get them a raw hide bone and see what happens. So, I got them both those large raw hides, and it had stopped until the bone was gone. Try that, and see what happens. If that doesn't help, then I'd suggest contacting a behavior specialist.

My moms dog used to roll around in cow crap. Not that it makes you feel any better, it was always funny to me to see him do it after she just washed him...LOL. He had his own personality thats for sure.

My dog is a Jack Russel Terrier, and they are bred to dig up things like gophers and kill them. And my dog does it once in a while. Then I call him Gopher Slayer for a week or so.

Dachshunds are known to hunt..as they're hounds. Thankfully they live at home in NY and we have a cement backyard that isn't too big.

I believe they rub in dead animals to hide their scent from predators.... it's a natural instinct.

My dog does the same thing to lizards. I call her the Lizard Queen. Luckily those things are so small that there's no smell involved when she rolls over them.

Definitely get large rawhide chews, many of them, and praise your dog every time she chews it. Remember to not get the Greenie chews, as dogs have been kicking the hydrant due to them.

LOL, she has both, she snubbed the greenies, and buries the the rawhide, so those we keep inside and I do praise her, but I guess nothing beats killing a gopher and rolling around in it's guts! Here is the best pic I could find of her (she's the one standing on the floor):

your dog is probably bored. QH are cattle dogs, they like to work and get they bored fast. Left alone they'll get into trouble. All dogs roll around in dead carcasses. They're hunters. It blocks their scent from potential food. All this stuff is instinct.

My girlfriend's dog a Jack Russel Terrier ( I believe this dogs are hunters) In Puerto Rico there are aaaa lot of this green iguanas. I think Puerto Rico is seeing the verge of a plague of this things. Well this dog when they cross over the fence he chases them and eats them leaving chunks of iguana all over the yard. But he dosen't roll over with the carcass.
I don't have a picture because...I can't

She is GORGEOUS!!! Throw out the Greenies, though, seriously. Too many dogs have died from them, they aren't digestable- even if she has snubbed them. She's uber smart then ;) Does she have another pal to herd? That might curb some of her gopher fun, but it's more or less instinct on her part, so your best bet is to just get a pressure washer. It'll definitely assist in ridding of that annoying undercoat!

Thanks! I'll tell her Godzilla said she is beautiful! A pressure washer!! LMAO! She is a great dog, we got very lucky to aquire her. I work for Hospice and one of our patients who had no family or friends was very worried what would happen with his dog. So I met he and his dog and brought him pics of the house and yard to assure him she would have a great home. She and I hit it off immediately, and he said right there he wanted me to have her, sweet little 'ole guy. He died a few weeks later, and we adopted her. She was sad for about a day and has been with us ever since (almost 2 years now). I LOVE JENNY!!

Karen, try washing your dog with tomato juice. It makes a hella mess, but the acid in the tomatos juice will wash away the stank. I know it works for skunk stank!

Oh my goodness, your dog is gorgeous. If you've got her stuff, then I guess there's not much you can do at this point. Just hope she doesn't get into the bad habit of chicken killing. Grace, my german shepherd, took it up for about a month and we didn't know. That is, until she came home limping. She's got a good size chunk of lead stuck inside her leg. The four vets we took her to all agree that it would cause a lot more harm to remove it than to just leave it there. She stopped chicken killing though.
