Video Game Music in General (whats the best) - Thursday, June 24, 2004 1:02 PM
Everyone the past few days has been posting about what they think the best video game music is. I keep hearing Mega Man, Castlevania, and where I live a lot of people say Finaly Fantasy. Personally my favorite video game music of all time is a tie between the intro song to the NES game G.I. Joe and the NES game Rambo. Those songs both rock. They aren't that long, and the rest of the music in the games isn't great.

What are your alls favorites? If Megaman or Castlevania is your favorite be specific. Which songs, which levels?

Bloody Tears from Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.

Word. Quite possibly the coolest piece music made for any videogame ever.

Speaking of which, all of you CV fans should check out The Castlevania Dungeon if you want to find some cool fan-made and official soundtrack MP3s of this song, as well as many other cool songs from the entire series. The links to the songs on the Multimedia page will take you to FilePlanet, and you'll have to sign up for a free account if you want to download 'em first, but trust me, it's worth it.

The best music in any video game has to be from Super Metroid. The themes from that game are so timeless and intricate that a tribute project called Relics of the Chozo (available free, google for it) came to life, and contains some incredible material.

Metroid Zero Mission has awesome music also, but the resolution is just a bit low. The other entries in the series are also great.

Echo for Bloody Tears, as well as many other Castlevania themes. Not surprisingly, SNES Castlevania 4 had probably the most consistent good music overall. That, and then PS1 Symphony of the Night.

Also of course the DDR music is pretty good... heh
Enough already. It's over. Learn to deal.

Metroid Prime. Talon Overworld has some trippy shit going on. Haunting and atmospheric. That's the way I like my music in video games.

Dudes, Final Fantasy have awesome music, and I recommend you on getting "The Black Mages" album, it's a band that plays the battle themes from lots os Final Fantasy, from 2 to 10, I believe. THAT is fantastic! By the way, Nobuo himself (the composer of these songs) plays the keyboard, the quality is UNBEATABLE!
And I also recommend getting the album "The Midnight Carnival", from the game Guilty Gear XX. It's fantastic! It's a double album, by the way.

I'm pretty sure you'll like!

Baldur's Gate. Epic, soothing, etc. It covers so much ground and does it amazingly. On top of that, I think it's probably one of the best video games in general of all time.

Baldur's Gate II get my vote. Not only is it better than the first, but the combat music sounds so much like Tchaikovsky that sometimes I think that my Dad is listening to it somehwere else in the house.

EDIT: Diablo gets the runner up for me. When your walking around Tristram that tune is \m/
Never mind, all the muisic is so eerie and freaky.

Most of my favourites are from the NES, for whatever reason. Waxing nostalgic, probably.

Castlevania II
Mike Tyson's Punch Out!
Super Mario Bros.
Blades Of Steel
Contra
Bases Loaded

I know I'm forgetting a bunch.
I choose to block the posts of men.

That is, DrumRMan and Ultra Man.

I was doing some research on video game music on g4's website and found out that the goofy guy tommy who hosts JUDGEMENT DAY is one of the most highly respected composers for video game music today. Apparently he teaches audio engineering at UCLA and is a consultant for DTS. I just thought he was a goofy guy who played games all day.

Some of my favourite videogame music...

* Sonic 2 (I totally love the Chemical Plant theme.)
* Streets Of Rage II/Shinobi III (Yuzo Koshiro is the MAN. he could do things with the Megadrive's sound chip that seemingly no-one else could do)
* Sonic CD (The original Japanese/European soundtrack; vastly superior to the US one, and full of good J-pop cheese. )
* Guity Gear X (RAWK!)
* Shenmue (Soooooo fucking gorgeous.)
* An old C64 Tetris clone called ATA (had grrrrreat in-game music)
* Some of the load music on old Ocean C64 games.

Necronomicon and Wild Woody get mentions purely for the inclusion of John Petrucci and Ron Thal, respectively. Oh and the new Fallout thingy on PS2 has Devin Townsend on it.

In short, videogame music = teh win.

The guy may play keyboard, yet he still insists on gathering the best players in the area on the instruments he needs for the particular game for the OST. Its much better with live recordings than with a keyboard!

Well, Mario 64 and Zelda 64 had some of the most interesting game music, but in general, I think Spy Hunter had the coolest music.

my vote goes for final fantasy music...however, I think the music from FFX-2 is...lacking a bit. I suppose it goes with the pop theme of the game, itself--but I prefer his music from his earlier games--even FFX--to this one. The main crystal theme from the old games is beautiful...gives me chills nearly every time I listen to it...I think I'm gonna listen to it now, actually.

I have to agree with you there about Final Fantasy, too... in terms of sheer emotion and orchestration, all of FF's music is hard to top. I remember aside from liking the main theme that you mention, a favorite of mine was the Overworld theme from FF6 (released on the SNES as Final Fantasy 3), I always thought it had a really cool movie soundtrack sound to it. Nobuo Uematsu simply rocks.

YES! When I was younger I spent more time in the options menu listening to the songs than acutally playing the game.

And also, I think I am the only person in the world who thinks that the OST's to Shining Force I & II are the best ones ever. Everyone else hated them Chrono Trigger also has a great soundtrack.
Here he comes. Here comes John Wayne. "I'm not going to cry about my Pa. I'm going to build an airport... Put my name on it." Why, Michael? So you can fly away from your feelings?

I always thought the music from some of the Command and Conquer games was excellent. C&C: Red Alert had that awesome Soviet theme, and some other cool techno / metal tracks, and Red Alert 2 continued that trend. C&C Generals also features some very excellent, culture specific (depending on which side you were playing) themes.
