Favorite DT Song from Each Album - Monday, February 08, 2010 10:36 AM
AND WHY!

When Dream and Day Unite: Only A Matter of Time.     I really like the music and the way the words are sung. That's about it.

Images and Words
: Under A Glass Moon.    This is my favorite DT song. I love the entirety of Images and Words, but UAGM is just my favorite. The whole song is just so good. Heavy, proggy, poppy, awesome JP solo. Not to mention the tambourine, and JM's mini "solo". I also love JLB's voice. Uh oh, I need to change my pants.

Awake: Lifting Shadows Off a Dream.        I think JM's best lyric. I love the bass. It's so chilling and creepy. LaBrie's voice is truly magnificent in this song. I love it.

Falling Into Infinity: New Millenium.     I love the stick, the drumming and the lyrics. It's just one of those unique DT songs that always sticks out. The groove part in the middle of the song is wonderful too.

Metropolis Pt.2 Scenes From A Memory: Beyond This Life.        Prog masterpiece. I can't really pick a "song" from SFAM because there are only a few that I find worthy for a standalone. But BTL is certainly my favorite track from one of the best albums ever.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence: Misunderstood/The Great Debate.   Both of these songs have musical appeal I like. Slow AND heavy. It is flat out too hard for me to pick one. Are you justified to turn from a god to God save me? So sexy. (that's a mash up, lol!)

Train of Thought: As I Am.     My email address is from this song. I love the solos, and the lyrics more importantly.

Octavarium: The Root of All Evil.     Just a wonderful opening track for an album. Heavy and also very simple. I like the lyrics as well.

Systematic Chaos
: The Dark Eternal Night.       So energy, so power, yeah!

Black Clouds and Silver Linings: A Nightmare to Remember.    I have the beginning riff right before James sings as my text ring tone. I love how heavy it is, then it pulls a 180 and makes the most melodic, soft and majestic part of a song. It literally sends a chill up my spine and sometimes a tear. Its magnificent.

Re:Favorite DT Song from Each Album - Monday, February 08, 2010 11:23 AM
I don't really dig DT post TOT, so here's the records I have.

WDADU - Ytse Jam.
I like this because DT, throughout the whole album, were seemingly intent on throwing as many ideas together with their instrumental sections and totally going for it, as opposed to finding a riff, changing it's key a few times and soloing the shit out of it. There is variety here, and I dig.

I&W - Learning To Live.
If anything, it's the lyrics on this one that give it the top spot. Just love how fucking epic it is man, with every instrumentalist hitting their peak in terms of both techincality and taste.

Awake - Space Dye Vest.
Did somebody say ATMOSPHERE?

FII - Lines in the Sand.
Sherinian will forever be my favourite DT key player, and this track is why. Sure, it's long, but doesn't meander, punches you in the face when it has to, mellows out when it has to, and although it's fuckin' 12 minutes long, it's never cluttered with unecessary showmanship.

SFAM - Fatal Tragedy.
Probably the only time a trade off between JR and JP has kept my interest. Punchy, man.

SDOIT - Blind Faith.
Their best song of the rudess era, no doubt. Great atmosphere and vibe to the song, fuck off solo, major tonality too, which is a rarity these days!

TOT - As I Am.
If there ever was a DT song just to kick you square in the fuckin' balls, this is it. Ouch.

When Dream And Day Unite: The killing hand
I like the intro very much, and all the emotion it has.

Images And Words: Learning to live
This is why i love DT

Awake: Voices
Such a great song, a killer solo, amazing vocals and lyrics.

Falling Into Infinity: Hell's Kitchen
I think this is the greatest instrumental DT ever made.

SFAM: Overture 1928
The best way to give a clue of what is going to follow.

SDOIT: Glass Prison
One of the heaviest DT songs, and some of the greatest riffs from JP.

TOT: In the name of God
I just love it

Octavarium: Octavarium
24 minutes full of musical greatness!

SC: I dont like this record :(

BC&SL: The Count Of Tuscany
The song that gave me hope that DT are still able to make a masterpiece.

When Dream and Day Unite: No real opinion. I've always kind of ignored this one.

Images and Words: Learning to Live. Beautifully crafted, and really represents what Dream Theater is about for me.

Awake: Lifting Shadows Off a Dream. Again, very beautiful. I like The Mirror a lot, too, but this representing the softer side of Awake makes more of an impact, since Awake also has a lot of heavy material.

Falling Into Infinity: Trial of Tears. Noticing a pattern? Myung is a god, haha. Sums up the feel of FII for me, as well as being the epitome of good basswork.

Scenes From a Memory: The Spirit Carries On. Pink Floyd influence + brilliant vocals + best guitar solo ever recorded? Oh lawd.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence: The Glass Prison. Jesus, this song is unrelenting. Absolutely brutal all the way through.

Train of Thought: As I Am. Absolutely balls-to-the-walls, whilst still being very interesting. Amazing drum solo.

Octavarium: Octavarium. The epitome of a Dream Theater creation. This song couldn't be finer.

Systematic Chaos: In the Presence of Enemies. A great range of feelings and attitudes, showcases the slower, as well as faster moments of DT perfectly.

Black Clouds and Silver Linings: The Best of Times. The most heartfelt thing they've written, and powerful in its own regard.

WD&DU: Ytsejam. No Dominici. If you consider WD&DRU then the Killing Hand.
I&W: Take the Time. Great music, great lyrics.
A: Lie. This song introduced me to DT.
FII: Peruvian Skies. Awesome guitar solo with true feeling.
SFAM: Finally Free. The best way to close an epic album.
6DOIT: The Glass Prison: Metal Rules !!!
TOT: Stream of Consciousness. LTE meets Metallica. Nothing more to say.
8V: Sacrificed Sons. Great solo, lyrics full of feeling.
SC: The Ministry of Lost Souls: Lot of music packed in one song.
BC&SL: The Best of Times: Another guitar solo that takes this song to outerspace.

Re:Favorite DT Song from Each Album - Monday, February 08, 2010 2:27 PM
WDADU - A Fortune in Lies.   This is one of the songs that I feel was more suited for Charlie's voice and not James. It's pretty straightforward and easy to get into.
I&W - Surrounded, although Learning to Live and Take the Time are right there as well.  Surrounded is just so upbeat, and James kills on this one.  The line "His shadow slowly fading from the wall" is still one of my favorite vocal parts of all time.
Awake - I can't say I really have a favorite here.  This is one album that, for me, needs a straight listen through every time to really appreciate it.  Just from start to finish, it's a real amazing ride, and Dream Theater's best album.
FII - New Millennium just has a groove that no other DT song really has.  It seems to me like an anomaly in their song writing, and that's why I love it.  One of DT's best.
SFAM - Overture 1928.  The best instrumental DT has done
SDOIT - Blind Faith.  This song is, to me, the perfect blend of DT's metal and progressive parts.  James' vocal melodies are also stellar.
TOT - In the Name of God.  That main riff just rules
Octavarium - Octavarium.  I love Jordan's solo at the end of Medicate (Awakening) and Petrucci's solo towards the end of Intervals.
SC - Probably ITPOE.  When you get into the story, it's a  neat ride
BC&SL - The Shattered Fortress.  All the twists and turns keep you guessing, and that's why I like it.  It's not straightforward at all, and JP's re-imagining of the solo from This Dying Soul at the beginning is superb

WDADU: Killing Hand - Love the epic feel of this one

I&W: Metropolis, Pt. 1 - No need to explain

Awake: The Mirror - Just a bad ass tune

FII: Lines in the Sand - In fectious groove, and love the quiet Petrucci break

SFAM: Home - Maybe DT's best tune; the mid-East feel/groove is spectacular

SDOIT: Petrucci's most aggressive riff and best tone I've heard from him

TOT: As I am - Not a great song, but I don't love this album. A tad too straight-forward for me

Octavarium: Title track; blissful prog-rock

SC: The Dark Eternal Night - Pantera-esque rif****e with a killer outro

BC&SL: TCoT - Brilliant, musically

WDADU: Only a Matter of Time (I'm not particularly familiar with this album aside from OaMoT & Afterlife, so OaMoT wins by default)

I&W: Surrounded (A real toss up between this and learning to live, absolutely love both)

A: Voices (Pure Art that song is, for mine nothing else on the album comes close, and there are some awesome songs on this album)

FII: Take Away My Pain (Absolutely beautiful song. Hollow Years, Trial of Tears, Just Let Me Breathe & Hell's Kitchen all close. Actually despite what Mike has said about not being happy with this album because of all the record label input, I think it's a fantastic album)

SFAM: Home (Strange Deja Vu, The Spirit Carries On, Beyond This Life, Finally Free all are equally as good, just love that bit in Home where the wah wah kicks in, so that gets it over the line)

6DOIT: Blind Faith (Lyrically possibly DT's best IMO. Solitary Shell, About To Crash, Glass Prison, Goodnight Kiss all right up there. About to Crash never seems to get much love but JR's piano at the start is my favourite JR work)

TOT: As I Am (Although one of my least fav DT albums, it's remarkably consistent, This Dying Soul, Stream of Conciousness, In The Name Of God are all right up there)

8VM: Octavarium (My favourite DT song. I also love I Walk Beside You and The Root of All Evil which would be winners on most other albums)

SC: ITPoE Pt II (Lyrically I can really connect with it, I have a bit of a Dark Master inside me that likes to take me over when I'm down. Love Prophets of War & Forsaken too.)

BC&SL: The Count Of Tuscany (EPIC. For me the only songs that don't contend for best song of this album are A Rite Of Passage & The Best Of Times, and I still think they're both great songs, just another very consistently excellent album).

If you add in the live albums:

LatM: Bombay Vindaloo (it's like a big Satriani, Vai & Yngwie jam)
OiaLT: Trial Of Tears (Don't like how James sings Voices on this release)
LaB: Solitary Shell
LSFNY: Voices / Learning To Live
Score: 6DOIT (Even though Octavarium is my favourite song, hearing the crowd go absolutely nuts during six degrees lights my fire)
CIM: Surrounded (My god I love Petrucci's solo in this, apologies to Blind Faith)

Train of Thought: Honor Thy Father - Can't help headbanging to this :).

Octavarium: Octavarium - SOOOOOO AWESOME!!!!

Systematic Chaos
: Ministry of Lost Souls - Epic, and moving...everything in one

Re:Favorite DT Song from Each Album - Monday, February 08, 2010 4:12 PM
WDADU: The One Who Help to Set the Sun - Hands down the best song from this album.  Can't imagine why it doesn't get more love.

IAW: Under a Glass Moon - from the moment I heard that JP solo, I knew that this was MUCH MUCH more than a Fates Warning copy cat band.  They were FAR FAR beyond....

Awake: Lifting Shadows Off a Dream - no song "builds" like this one does.  Although I will say that the live intro improves the song even further.

FII: New Millennium - the Chapman stick intro, and the breakdown just get me air bassing every time.

SFAM: Beyond This Life - Everything that DT is all about is contained in this one song.

SDOIT: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance - EPIC!  I cannot separate it from its complete perfection....but if I was forced to choose a favorite part it would be the ATC Reprise.  Still...the track doesn't have the same impact by itself, which leads me to my argument that it's the complete song that is my favorite track

ToT: Honor Thy Father - just love the groove on this one.

8V: Octavarium - my all time favorite DT track from my all time favorite DT album.  The perfect DT epic.

SC: The Dark Eternal Night - This is the only track on this album that I like

BCSL: The Count of Tuscany - I actually had a tough time picking a favorite from this album because it's ALL so good.    In the end....the "IIIIIIIIIIII's" were what clinched it for me.

I like the idea of including the live albums.   My favorite moments are:

LatM: Bombay Vindaloo - wish they would resurrect this one.   (honorable mention should go to the LiT video's version of Ytse Jam with MP's drum solo.  It has surpassed NP's drum solo in YYZ from ESL as the greatest drum solo ever recorded)

OiaLT: Peruvian Skies/Have a Cigar/Enter Sandman - the only truly shining moment on what is (IMHO) a very weak live album.

LSFNY: Caught in a New Millennium - totally original "mash up"....

LaB: Beyond This Life - just when you thought the original couldn't get any better...the boys kick it up a notch!!

Score: Six Degress of Inner Turbulance - so many fantastic moments that its hard to choose. But how can you not give the nod to this epic with an ORCHESTRA!!

CiM: Surrounded/Sugar Mice - what a brilliant update/mash up of two extraordinary songs.

WDADU - The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun.  Probably the coolest thing I've heard JM do in the intro.  The chorus is intense too.  Great song, glad I saw them play it in Philly in 2004

I&W - Learning To Live.  To me, this is THE definitive Dream Theater song (maybe tied with ACoS).  It just has everything and tells a fascinating musical story.  I was in so much shock and awe when I first heard this, how a band of 22 year olds could have created something of this caliber.  Amazing that their most mature work came at just their 2nd album.

Awake - Scarred.  The perfect fusion between prog/metal/technical/moody/emotional.  The jazzy intro was one of a kind and the different bridges kick all sorts of ass.

FII - Trial Of Tears.  In Rudess era DT, the key/guitar solos are usually my least favorite part of the song.  The middle of ToT however is utterly brilliant.  I love the progression in the background - it's so full of tension and builds to such a climax over a perfectly executed guitar solo.  Where have these sort of moments gone in this band?

SFAM - Finally Free.  Chock full of awesome parts and re-interpreted riffs and themes.  Dark, moody, and epic...a perfect closer to this perfect album.

SDOIT - Disappear.  I could listen to this song on repeat for the rest of my life.  Experimental for DT but SOOOO effective.  Truly haunting and beautiful, James's verse at the end might be my favorite LaBrie moment ever.

ToT - In The Name Of God.  That chord progression at the end saves this song, it's that awesome of a progression.  Not a huge fan of the meedly guitar/synth passage in the middle but the Latin groove underneath makes a cool effect so I give it props.

8VM - Octavarium.  It flows pretty well and I like all the parts.  The instrumental section is killer, the outro solo is awesome, and the intro is gorgeous.  Cool guitar pattern in the first vocal section too.

SC - The Dark Eternal Night.  It's just better than the other ones.  This is my least favorite album and I really don't care for the majority of the songs.  Presence Of Enemies is by far their weakest epic.

BC&SL - Wither.  Beautiful song, with fantastic lyrics and arrangement.  I love the emotive and moody side of DT so much better than the solo shred-fest side.  The Count Of Tuscany would be a very close second.

Images And Words: Learning to live
This is why i love DT

Awake: Voices
Such a great song, a killer solo, amazing vocals and lyrics.

Falling Into Infinity: Hell's Kitchen
I think this is the greatest instrumental DT ever made.

SFAM: Overture 1928
The best way to give a clue of what is going to follow.

SDOIT: Glass Prison
One of the heaviest DT songs, and some of the greatest riffs from JP.

TOT: In the name of God
I just love it

SC: I dont like this record :(

BC&SL: The Count Of Tuscany

Pretty much this. Probably just about prefer Space Dye Vest from Awake. Hard to ignore Blind Faith but yeah TGP shades it. Overture 1928 is a good pick because I don't really see that album in terms of songs, may as well pick the overture. I do like ITPOE so that for SC. Not a massive fan of TCOT but that's the best from the new one

WDADU: Only a Matter of Time - The Killing Hand a close second.

I&W: Learning to Live - Prog masterpiece.  Great lyrics.

Awake: Voices - Hard to choose between this and Scarred, but I just think Voices builds to a beautiful climax.

FII: Anna Lee - I think this is a beautiful song that doesn't get its due.

SFAM: One Last Time

6DOIT: Solitary Shell - About to Crash (reprise) - Losing Time/Grand Finale - I don't necessarily think of this whole disc as one song, but I do with these three.  Segues beautifully and the SS solo is a work of art.

TOT: In the Name of God - Great riffs and unison soloing by JP and JR.  Almost chose SOC, my favorite DT instrumental.

8VM: Sacrificed Sons - A little torn on this, just because there's a bit of dissonance between the lyrics and music to me.  It's still strange to me that a song about 9/11 rocks so hard.  Octavarium is great too, but I think it's a little drawn out at the beginning.

SC: ITPoE - I consider both parts as one song.  A worthy addition to the pantheon of DT epics, IMO.

BC&SL: The Count Of Tuscany - Goofy lyrics, but great music.

Live albums:

LatM: Another Hand/The Killing Hand - Just a great live song.
OiaLT: Trial Of Tears
LaB: Solitary Shell
LSFNY: Learning To Live
Score: Raise the Knife - Should have been part of FII.  Really enjoyed hearing them play this and Another Won live that night.
CIM: Surrounded

Re:Favorite DT Song from Each Album - Monday, February 08, 2010 10:09 PM
WDaDU: Another Won.  Good mix of prog and catchiness, love the main riff

I&W: Metropolis Pt.1.  BASS SOLO

Awake: Erotomania.  Possibly my favourite Petrucci solo because it's not just playing over a repeating chord progression/straight-forward riff.  Every instrument is structured around the guitar solo and it just sounds fantastic

Falling into Infinity: Hell's Kitchen.  That big run near the end into the super-dramatic chord progression is awesome.  As is the super-dramatic chord progression, of course

SFAM:  Beyond This Life.  The instrumental section is on another planet

6DOIT:  The Glass Prison.  I think the big instrumental bit is just a bit too big...  But it's one of the best album openers DT have imo.

TOT:  Stream of Consciousness.  Search for any DT related thread I've posted in, you've probably got a 70% chance that I'll be ranting about how the classical ending sequence is the best thing ever

8V: 8V itself.  The lyrics are a bit too disjointed but it's the most dramatic thing DT have ever done; it's a rare example of rock band-meets-orchestra that doesn't overwhelm you with cheese...  There's a certain amount of cheese there, but it's the "I DON'T GIVE A FUCK, THIS IS AWESOME" kind of cheese rather than the cringeworthy kind (see: Muse's new album)

SC: ItPoE.  Towards the end of Part 2 when the very first riff of Part 1 is repeated is amazing, especially given the furious abandon of the instrumental section that precedes it

BC&SL: The Count of Tuscany.  Multiple awesome riffs, a killer "chorus" and the final five (or so) minutes are cathartic and awesome

Well, that was fun.

WDADU: Afterlife - It's the only one I know :-)
I&W: Under a Glass Moon - Mostly for the phenomenal guitar solo.
Awake: Voices - Love LaBrie's performance on this one
FII: Lines in the Sand - I can remember listening to FII for the first time, thinking "I can see why people don't like this album" - then I got to Lines in the Sand, and I remember thinking "Wait, why were they saying that? This song is freaking awesome!"
SFaM: Dance of Eternity - It could win just for the ragtime piano section. But the whole song blew me away with its time signaturial complexity.
6DOIT: Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - for the brilliant composition, recurring thematic material, transitions of pace, and Solitary Shell :-D
ToT: Endless Sacrifice - Not sure why this one sticks out for me.
8VM - Octavarium - Because 90% of people above have said this, having no sense of individuality, I must conform to the masses. And because of the insane instrumental section at the end - switching styles every 4-8 bars (particularly the jingle bells riff).
SC: Dark Eternal Night - The bizarre middle instrumental section juxtaposed against the brutal verses
BC&SL: A Nightmare to Remember - Peaceful Sedation.

For the record, I now take back what I thought about FII - I quite enjoy the majority of songs on this album - can't wait for my Demos CD to arrive...

WDADU-Light Fuse and Get Away.  I really like the structure of this song, and I think it's the most progressive on the album.

I&W-Tough choice between Metropolis Part I and Under a Glass Moon.  The first time I heard Met I, my jaw was on the ground.  And UAGM has a great groove, and my favorite John Petrucci guitar solo.  I'll take Metropolis Part I, just because it blew my expectations of what was possible in music wide open.

Awake-So many tough choices.  6:00 is a great statement of intent.  Voices has some great atmospheres, and a killer JP solo.  Scarred is sublime.  Space Dye Vest was a great coda on Kevin Moore's time in the band.  I'm going to go with 6:00, primarily because it clearly outlines the band's intentions for following up Images and Words.

FII-Trial of Tears.  Love the solo section.

SFAM-Home/The Dance of Eternity.  I can take or leave the rest of the album, but the keyboard solo on Home is my favorite moment on the album.

SDOIT-Misunderstood.  I love how dynamic and moody this song is.  Kinda wish DT would explore more sonic terrain like this.

TOT-In the Name of God.  From the metal riff at the open to the clever use of The Battle Hymn of the Republic over the outro, this song is a great finish to one of my favorite DT albums.

8V-These Walls.  I was glad to hear DT scale back the chops and focus on the song here.

SC-In the Presence of Enemies.  Great epic.

BC&SL-The Shattered Fortress.  I like how DT ended the AA Suite.  Best song on what is to me, one of the weaker DT albums.

Re:Favorite DT Song from Each Album - Tuesday, February 09, 2010 1:27 AM
WD&DU: never really clicked for me, so I'll hold my favourite over a little...
I&W: Learning to Live, in fact, the whole second half really. But especially Learning to Live. It's lyrically one of their best and musically EPIC.
Awake: (cashing in here) 6:00, which unlike most of DT's offerings is relatively short, punchy and to the point, has something of its own sound and opens the album nicely. Also, Scarred, which doesn't get anywhere near the appreciation it deserves in my arrogant opinion.
FII: New Millennium, for similar reasons to 6:00.
SfaM: The Dance of Eternity. Just... the Dance of Eternity. Honourable mention goes to Beyond This Life, for the break.
SDoiT: Misunderstood. (can't be stuffed putting comments in any more, it's all pretty much the same reasons)
ToT: In the Name of God.
8v: The Root of All Evil.
SC: In the Presence of Enemies, Pt 1 (not a big fan of any one SC song, I used to like Repentance a lot though)
BC&SL: A Rite of Passage, which with Wither is just about the only respectable song on the album :/ Nice break, too.

When Dream And Day Unite: A Fortune In Lies.
Images And Words: Metropolis.
Awake: Erotomania, but I would pick A Mind Beside Itself if I could).
Falling Into Infinity: This is a hard choice, as none of the songs significantly stand out further than the others, but honourable mentions include Trial Of Tears, Anna Lee and New Millennium.
Metropolis, Pt. 2: Finally Free, but with Fatal Tragedy a close second.
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence: Disappear.
Train Of Thought: This Dying Soul.
Octavarium: Sacrificed Sons and Octavarium are on equal first from this album.
Systematic Chaos: The Ministry Of Lost Souls.
Black Clouds And Silver Linings: A Nightmare To Remember, with The Count Of Tuscany a close second.
