PT's Time Flies Appreciation
-
Saturday, December 05, 2009 12:16 AM
This song floors me. It has to be one of the 3 best songs of 2009. For me personally it's one of the best songs of the last 10 -15 years. It takes me on a journey. What more can I say. Easily 11/10. Brilliant!!!

I don't know if I'd go that far, but it definitely is one of my favorite musical moments of 2009. It's the highlight of The Incident's first disc, for sure. I will agree that it takes you on a journey. Steven Wilson has such a way with lyrics. You know exactly what he's communicating, and at the same time you feel like you can completely connect with it. "I could tell you what I'm thinking / While we sit here drinking / But I'm not sure where to start" . . . "The coat you wore to Alton towers / Is still the way I see you now" . . . Totally evocative stuff.
"The good man is the only excellent musician, because he gives forth a perfect harmony not with a lyre or other instrument but with the whole of his life." - Plato

To me, it's got a serious Trains vibe. So that's not a bad thing, to say the least.
"You want to come to the wedding?" "Only if I can sit on the bride's side." "You'll find it a bit lonely on my side..." "Your side always was a bit lonely. But I wouldn't sit anywhere else."

A good chunk of the song is an homage to Pink Floyd's "Dogs" (my favorite song ever), among other songs by them, so of course it's good.

The thing for me personally is even though many people say "it's so cliche"...well just wait until half of your life is gone. In almost every way I still feel 18 but my daughter is a freshman in college for Christ sake. Time fucking flies and I'll be really honest with you...it's scary as hell. SW made me FEEL those years passing by. Sometimes I have to fight back a tear when I listen to this song. Even if your motto is Carpe Diem and you sieze the day, it doesn't change the fact that Time Flies. Time fucking flies.

Mike I've read that a few times now and I'm not sure what your saying unless you mean it's 'way' more than just an homage. SW did say that he only altered it enough to keep from getting sued, and I know that it treads very very close to both Dogs and Sheep (and other Floyd songs if you listen hard enough) but even with it's "ripoff" qualities I am floored by it. I guess in a way it speaks to how powerful a song Dogs really is. I can't begin to tell you how many times I sat listening to that song in cometmplation. About life. About death. About choices. About parents divorce. About future. About past.

Mike, I don't know if you misread my post or something (if anything, I'm probably misreading your post, as I can't tell if you actually are calling it a rip-off or being sarcastic towards me), but the in my post didn't mean I was sarcastically mocking the song for being a rip-off. I honestly love "Time Flies" because it reminds me of those songs. It's funny, though, because lately, every time I've listened to The Incident, I end up listening to Animals within the same hour.

I love this song, even more so live. Dogs is one of my favourite Pink Floyd songs so not surprising. Think some of the guitar sounds similar to Sheep (i know this has been mentioned elsewhere by others).

I agree, this song just tears me up too, I got pretty emotional hearing it live. It just touches a nostalgic/melancholic chord with me that brings up all kinds of childhood memories and feelings. Absolutely brilliant! The subject matter scares the hell out of me too, life goes by waaaaay to fast.

Yeah I think MP is saying that it does indeed rip-off Dogs/Sheep. And it certainly does, but it is a real cool song! I agree with MP but I was kinda like "woah" reading his post there, with the internet today you know that's bound to cause some hype if it gets out and SW will see it and the world will end and stuff fucking laughed at the cream pie joke

Terms like "ripoff" are a bit harsh in this context, though it does walk the fine line between "homage" and "stealing." At least Steven admits it. I recall him saying "It's just different enough not to get sued." Regardless, I feel it's an extremely good song with a lot going for it, lyrically. I mean, "Animals" was the first album SW ever bought, and it's a song about his childhood and the flow of time, so it makes sense. This song is unbelievable and breathtaking live. I think I could say this has been my favorite song this year.

I can't help but chime in. Hasn't it all been done before musically speaking ?? I mean, listen to Ace Mark's guitar work on BIGELF's "Cheat The Gallows". There's so many PAGE and GILMOUR licks that he plays (note for note at times) that it's kind of funny. However, BIGELF still kicks major ass .... regardless. Let's see, what else ?? DT's "This Dying Soul" and the "Blackened" section, "Constant Motion" where the verse melodies are VERY similar to ANTHRAX' "I Am The Law", the flat out could almost be a MUSE B-side that is "Prophets Of War", the "Have A Cigar" inluence all over "Peruvian Skies" .... and so on. Whatever! Who Cares! The most blatant of rip offs or what have you is PT's VOYAGE 34 where the "Brick In The Wall, Pt 1" guitar riff is lifted right off of FLOYD. We could all make a GIANT list of .... OH YEAH moments in music. Bottom line, TIME FLIES is an amazing soung and THE INCIDENT is incredible! There is almost no ground left to break, it's all been repeated at some point or another. You know ??? Come on now.

postproggist I appreciate. +1 after the long dark middle section, when the strumming comes back in with "how does time slow down", its one of the most uplifting moments.

A Dog with fleas on it.
But this one bird didn't leave you, It stayed through the wintertime. You can't hear it sing but you can hear it as it flies. So don't you believe them? They'll destroy you with their lies. They only see the obvious. They see the sun go down but they don't see it rise...

I like time flies. It has bits that are clearly reference to Dog, Sheep, and parts of it remind me of The Wall. I don't look at it as a rip off but a sort of tribute; nothing wrong to try to imitate your idols. Now if they did it throughout the whole album, or catalog to that matter, then I'd have a problem with it but one song is just a nice tribute IMHO. Though I really like this album and this song for me the "MVP" is Remember Me Lover. I'm addicted to that song.

Wilson said in an interview that the similarity/plagiarism with Dogs is done on purpose. Anyway, the album fucking rocks. Circle of Manias is almost prog-metal.

Solitary Shell/Solsbury Hill Never Enough/Hysteria/Stockholm Syndrome Home/46 & 2 A Nightmare to Remember/That Was Just Your Life all have pretty direct "influences". Not to mention the Forsaken/Evanescence vibe, Prophets of War/Muse, I Walk Beside You/U2, TDS/Constant Motion/Metallica vibe ...and so on. I think it's a bit harsh to criticise PT for doing the same thing, especially only a few years after Steve Wilson personally apologised - on your album - for criticising you guys.
