Thanks for continuing to be the man and making the absolute best out of a terrible situation, Mike!

Here's to hoping for the future inclusion of Pos/Beardfish in a DT tour!

Scherztastic

I'd like to officially thank life for getting PoS fans hopes up. It was better back in the blissful days where everyone from North America could just say "well, I'm never going to see this band". We had amazing, fantastical dreams of someday travelling to Europe for some crazy excuse, but really just going to finally see the band we all adored. Life was good back then, when even the thought of seeing PoS live was locked away far across the seas.

But then life decided to play a game with us. Dangle it in front of our noses. Take something which seemed to be a dream, which seemed so far away, and make it seem like a reality. It made us believe again. Believe that the impossible was possible. Believe that in such a twisted, loathsome world as our own, there was a faint glimmer of hope.

It was all a two faced lie, wasn't it, life? Build us up to knock us down. You're a tricky one, and you've one this battle. Now we lie dejected and thrown in the dirt. With soot and our face and our spirits crushed beneath us like the tiniest smothered ant. Well, you and all the rest may try to get us down, life. But we'll be back, once we've picked ourselves back up. It'll be hard for us to ever dare to dream again, but I still hold out hope that one day a dream can become a reality. I have to...it's all I have left.

Plus, Beardfish is a frekkin AWESOME band and not seeing them makes me a sad panda

Yeah, pretty much sums up how I feel. Nevermind the possibility of PoS expanding their fanbase here and opening the door for a headline tour. Now what happens to the band? I will familiarise myself with the new acts and I suppose that there's a chance I'll find something totally life-changing (as I did with Pain of Salvation), but even if PoS find the label support to do their own tour, or to finance participation in another tour during the next year or two (to finally make good on their lifting of the North America ban), how can I ever prepare for that again?

Wow...I really feel for the American fans of those bands, that's rough as.

I'll have to check those other bands out.

I can't believe this.

I'm going to Toronto all the way from Brazil and I was all excited about seeing POS and DT together. And now that I actually started loving Beardfish... this was going to be one of my all time favorite concerts ever.

I cannot put into words how disappointed I am.
I know it's not MP's fault, but still... that's a major turnoff.

I also wish DT just extended their set, but I trust Mike as well. I do have Bigelf's Cheat the Gallows, and I like it a lot, but I was getting excited to see Beardfish and POS.
As of today, I'll be seeing Bigelf 3 times in about a month. I'll be at the Chicago and LA PN09 shows, then the Porcupine Tree show in LA in September that Bigelf are supporting at. I like them, but I didn't think I liked them enough to see them 3 times...I guess I was wrong.

Props to MP for making the best of a bad situation and still delivering a quality show to the fans. However, I really was only shelling out the cash for DT and POS, so I'm hoping I can still refund my ticket.

This is a shame for US fans, although I don't know any Beardfish or PoS.  Hope nobody has to pull out of the European leg...

Except maybe Bigelf, who I would happily have replaced by Cynic

Tough break. Gotta be tons of extra work to change things this late in the game. I'll bet MP was inches away from
the PN09 tour being 2 bands.

Anyhoo...all anybody can do is move forward and recalibrate. Same as in life. The curveballs come when you least
expect.

Devastated doesn't even begin to sum up how I feel. I was BEYOND pumped to see PoS. But, Mike, you have always done everything you can for us fans. I have no doubt that you did everything in your power to avoid this. Your reputation of generosity makes it easier for me to forgive the situation. But MAN!!

This.

I was so massively looking forward to PoS (especially the irony of catching them in our nation's capital), but we all know shit happens.  Fortunately, I have already been blown away by the awesomeness that is Scale the Summit's albums and I get Queensryche as a bonus for this show, so as always, THANK YOU MIKE for all you do for us!!  Looking forward to a GREAT show in DC.

This sucks beyond belief.

Just my opinion, but I think it would have been better for DT to scrap adding 2 new bands and just planned on doing a 2 set show. This would have made up for losing POS, for me.

I've gotta wonder who this affects the merchandising aspect of this tour.  Hopefully Mike & Co.  haven't already lost their asses printing shirts that now have the wrong lineup.  Might make for a nice collector's item, but it could seriously affect sales of shirts if they can't make new ones that have the new lineup in time for the tour...

I wouldn't mind the idea of a two set show because I'm starting to really get into Frank Zappa. I can live without seein g Pain of Salvation live but Beardfish I was really getting hyped up for. Oh well, shit happens.

Hey Mike - as long as you play.......Pull me under, Change of Seasons, LTL, some LTE Stuff............. ah hell, just play the set lists from both LAB and SCORE and it's all good.

J/K
I'm still hitting the first five shows.............i was getting into POS because of the upcoming shows........now i get exposure to more stuff.

Frankly, as long as DT gets up there and rocks, you could put the band at the wedding in the Hangover and I'd still happily attend.

I think I want my money back for my ticks. I was going there to see Pain of Salvation.

As much as I like DT, Pain of salvation was my reason to go to Montreal.

I find this to be very misleading. Not DTs fault but shitty all the same.
Getting tired of this, Gigantour in Montreal, 2005, on band cancelled but not replaced. Come on!!! What are we paying for!!

Makes those 2 headlining POS sets I saw at progpower even more special. Sucks for all of you. I know the feeling, Ive had Megadeth/Anthrax cancel here, Halford/Testament and GNR cancel.

Portnoy

For Immediate Release
June 22nd, 2009

It is with the utmost disappointment that I am forced to share the unfortunate news of both Pain Of Salvation and Beardfish having to pull out of this summer's Progressive Nation tour....

Their label Inside Out just recently lost the financial funding for the tour as a result of their distributor SPV recently claiming bankruptcy...which effectively meant that both Pain Of Salvation and Beardfish lost the tour support that was essential to their ability to come to North America for Progressive Nation.

All parties involved (myself, both bands, Inside Out, etc) are beyond devastated at this turn of events and are truly sorry to all of the fans that were looking forward to this lineup. We tried everything we could do to salvage the situation, but in the end it was not possible...

Well as the album title says, every Black Cloud does indeed have a Silver Lining....so with this unfortunate news, I bring to you the good news of 2 incredible bands that will jumping on board Progressive Nation to join Dream Theater and Zappa Plays Zappa this summer: Bigelf and Scale The Summit.

Los Angeles' Bigelf are my personal favorite new band to come along in many years...their latest CD "Cheat The Gallows" is my favorite album of the year and I already had positioned them onto the European run of Progressive Nation in the Fall....with them now joining us on PN09 in North America as well, it looks like world domination is now not that far out of reach for them!
Pretty soon, everyone will hopefully be falling for their retro, psychedelic, progressive, hard rock, doom metal as hard as I have!

Houston instrumental band Scale The Summit are a recent discovery for me and their top notch musicianship will be a perfect fit to this Progressive Nation lineup stylistically falling very nicely between the musicality of Dream Theater and Zappa Plays Zappa. They bring the instrumental elements of prog rock and fusion into today's contemporary hard rock/metal sounds and are one of the most talented group of young musicians I've seen assembled in many years.

Once again, apologies to anybody disappointed in this unexpected and unavoidable lineup change...but the circumstances were beyond our control...
In any event, PN09 will carry on and still deliver the most musical bang for its buck this summer throughout North America and we look forward to sharing the evening with you!

Sincerely,
Your Progressive Rock Ambassador,
Mike Portnoy

Can't say I am disappointed. In fact, I am thrilled. I would rather have a band I am totally unfamiliar with than have to sit through even a half hour of PoS.

I was REALLY looking forward Pain of Salvation and Beardfish... wow. I don't know what to think. I don't know and I don't care about the two new bands. Wow... seriously. I hope there will be a last minute change and PN09 will return back to its original line-up. 70$ for Dream Theater + Pain of Salvation was well worth it, but now...

Unhappy Birthday to me.  The main selling point for me was POS and Beardfish.  I've already seen DT and ZPZ and travelling to the Greek Theater is a major pain.  Not to mention the F***ed up parking they have.  Plus I'm already going to see Bigelf open for Porcupine Tree a couple weeks later.  Oh well, my props go to Mike for doing his best in a bad situation.

Let this be a lesson to all those who keep claiming that all those evil record companies do nothing but f*** their artists over and keep all the profits, somehow making it OK not to pay for their music, and who keep preaching how good music will always prevail and only the lame commercial stuff will suffer when the labels go down because of piracy.

Turns out reality is a bit different.

Turns out reality is a double-edged sword, an aspect you've completely chosen to ignore...but considering the piracy thread was locked, I'm not going into it anymore than that.

And damn. I was really looking forward to Pain of Salvation. I had heard so many good things about this band, but I never actually checked them out that much until they were finally announced for PN09. Inevitably, I fell in love with them...At least it will be an opportunity to discover more excellent artists, I hope.
