when MP said they'd only open for three bands... who do you think the other two are? Rush and Yes? even though they've already opened for Yes. the other band i was thinking would be Metallica, but could you really see DT and Metallica on the same stage anymore?

I think the "big 3" were Maiden, Rush, and Metallica, actually. I seem to recall reading or hearing something about that some time back in one of MP's posts or interviews. I'm not 100% positive, but I'm fairly sure.

So now that the cat's out of the bag regarding the summer tour with Maiden, I can't help but wonder if any of this stuff was in the works (at least preliminarily) back in November, which was the reason why DT chose to not tour North America again and keep the rest of 2010 clear. I wonder if either DT knew this might be coming, so they were playing it coy (either clearing their schedule just in case, or if they really knew something was legitimately in the works back in November)... or maybe they truly did plan to take the rest of 2010 off but basically scrapped that and jumped at the chance at this due it being a once-in-a-career type of opportunity. I'm inclined to think it's the latter, but I'm curious to know when the Maiden thing first started to take form. Just some food for thought.

I think the Iron Maiden tour is the reason we didn't get a spring tour (which is fine with me).

At the end of the Greek Theatre/LA show, the last night of the US tour, MP specifically said he'd be seeing us in the spring. I know bands say stuff like that all the time at shows, but he specifically said "spring"...not "next time" or "the next tour" or "next year." I don't know if he knew of the IM possibility back then, but at a minimum I'd say a spring tour was in the works--and then plans were abandoned when the IM thing came up.

I'm bummed out for no second leg, as that was my real hope of DT returning to Texas. But it just builds the anticipation for 2011. I will see them on their next NA tour, and I'll be taking whatever kind of road trip this requires.

OR...it would be even better to do a road trip to Europe. My wife and I have wanted to go for years...it would be awesome to see DT in the middle of a trip like that.

MP, thanks for the update. I'll see you and the band the next time you guys come through Detroit, assuming I'm still living here at that time. I suppose the absence of a Detroit show must have been a symptom of the economic woes that the area is facing. Anyway, good luck with everything.

Hopefully, this means that JP will get of his butt and do another album and a G3 tour. : )

Thanks for the news Mr. Portnoy. I can't imagine living a life where thousands of people are reading my plans for the next year. Some delighted and others annoyed. Once again, Kudos to you sir.

I've only recently realized that DT is the only band I can name that's never taken a break or broken up. They've had a few changes in line up but for the most part, it's truly amazing how dedicated to music the whole band is. Being a DT fan is so musically fulfilling. I don't think I could ask for more without being greedy.

The lyrics to never enough hit me hard I must say... Anyways, Thanks for being awesome Mr.P. I look forward to the instrumental track.

DT not having a second US leg does not disappoint me at all. I know how hard these guys work, and I was able to tell Mike, JP, Jordan, JMX, and James how much I appreciated them touring, and doing the meet & greets. Last thing I want is to see them get stressed to the point of saying "f**k it!, we're done!" and they decrease touring, if not stop altogether. The M&G seating at the Atlanta show was just a small barricaded-off area at stage left, and was jam packed with the 30 or 40 fans who did the M&G package. The GA part of the venue was packed full as well.

Definitely understand the whole situation a little more after reading the post by Littlekezza. Still sad that they won't be coming around but living in NY at least I was lucky enough to see them twice this past summer and also can hold some hope that if they do in fact play some one off shows, that NY would be a possibility I would have to think.

I do feel bad for the fans who passed up on the PN09 tour though. Knowing DT's set would only be 90 minutes I'm sure was a big factor in why some people didn't go and figured they'd hold off for DT's 2nd leg.

One thing about the comments regarding the expensive seats being empty and the cheap seats being filled... I think part of the reason for this is that it seems like many seats are held back for premium and meet and greet tickets. It seems like many of these tickets went unsold and then basically they release the seats close to the actual show date. At that time I would think most DT fans would already have their tickets and that is why some of those seats remain empty. I was able to get front row seats a couple of weeks before the Albany show due to these unsold seats being released and was able to sell my original tickets for a loss, but I'm sure many people wouldn't do that.

I'm kinda bummed here about the fact there will be no second leg for the NA tour - I might have made the 8 hour drive to Philly to see PN '09 if I would have known this before (I guess it's my fault for expecting that to happen). It sucks thinking I will probably never see The Count or Nightmare ever played live, but eh, I'll survive.

The good news is that since there will be no live DVD from the tour this year and that DT schedule sounds light in the winter, the boys will get some good R&R with their families and whatnot!

Totally agreed but for a different reason. I COULD CARE LESS about this project. Just not something I'm "into" at all. Personally, I don't see what the big deal is.

I "personally" would have rathered seen DT do more "extensive" touring of the U.S. behind "BC&SL".
Yes, they would have had to do more shows and in many cases, some smaller theaters across the states (equating to smaller earnings), BUT, the exposure would have been worth it. There are so many places across the country that they could have played, as well as sticking in the major cities too. I TOTALLY get the whole idea of "we don't want to have to play 50 shows to make what we'd make doing 25" BUT, isn't that the way it's always been done for non mainstream acts? I know DT is at a level where they can pick and choose, and that's great, but what's so wrong about marketing yourselves? I just think, especially with the #6 billboard entry, and now the absolute GREAT "Wither" video, they may have missed an opportunity here.

This is exactly why I thought DT needed to bring another 'name' band on the PN tour this year...drawing power
and tilting the promoters to give it a chance. PN in and of itself is a gallant effort to expose bands Mike digs
but the only decent draw is DT. I assume if the PN tour can continue in the future it would have to have another
big name along with DT. Time will tell...but right now it's hard to fill up a venue without some heavyweights on
the bill.

If PN is indeed done...then oh well, MP fulfilled a goal off the bucket list. Let's hope it continues but with some tweaks.

I waited a bit to post in here, to give MP's news time to sink in. Especially since I'm one of the ones who decided to wait for a true North American DT leg in 2010. Guess I shouldn't have--I snoozed and I really lost.

I have to say that, while I'm happy that the guys seem to be setting themselves up for a lengthy break (well deserved, I may add) my reaction to this is the same as the day I read MP's post. I am VERY disappointed, especially since I had no time available to take off work to go to any of the PN shows this summer. That, and I really only would've gone for DT and ZPZ anyway.

It just leaves me with the feeling that, once again, Texas is getting borked in the ass due to the economy. I know MP tried his best to put Texas dates (amongst other locations) on the PN North American leg and that it fell through. Not that I don't appreciate the effort...

I'm just really disappointed, is all.

With DT not touring the US again, and Transatlantic hopefully hitting the road, is it too far out of the scope of imagination to think that maybe PN10 could be a smaller less expensive production with a different headliner.....Transatlantic?!?

Take a few smaller groups who are used to operating on a shoestring budget (ie econoline vans and a trailer, 1-2 person crew etc) book some smaller 500-1000 seat venues, maybe only do 15-20 dates, and the PN spirit lives on!

I'm a bit sad nobody has suggested a JR solo tour yet! I would LOVE the opportunity to see him out and about with a proper band playing some of his solo material and even maybe some of the covers off of The Road Home! A solo album would be awesome though =) and from JLB as well, JP if he feels he has enough creative flow for it since he has been very hands on in DT on the last two albums particularly. Interested to see what MP does especially since we all know Akerfeldt has a year off too!

And I kind of hope for some European dates in the summer but I won't be greedy, seen them three times this tour so I wouldn't complain if I didn't =)

Well thanks Littlekezza... I think you've summed it up perfectly there.

We are gonna get a TransAtlantic tour, new DT song from the GOW III soundtrack, new JLB solo album/maybe tour, maybe a new JP album... bet your life Jordan won't be sitting still in 2010 and Mike has about a zillion ideas for 2010/2011/2012. (live DT album ''12 step suite'', sideprojects, ytsejam releases, new DT album... etc)

We should not complain I think.

And I think you took it a step further. There are not many bands out there that fill the void between tours and albums like DT does. Live releases, official bootlegs, side projects, MP's videos and now things like video game soundtracks. I hate to keep using Rush as an example again because I love them so much, but so often you get years in between tours and albums and absolutely nothing in between. So as a DT fan, I consider myself lucky to have two shots at a live show in a tour.
