(NITRO NICK)

I haven't bothered to read through every reply to this thread but as far as my DVDs are concerned they were "scored" literally. I got mine through CD Now and while the CDs were fine both DVDs were - well fukked.
The first disc came away from the centre holder during transit and has a lot of deep scratches in it . I've got a few glitches from that but it was the second disc that really stunned me. I was 53 minutes into the doco and it starts to miss and skip, image degradation - the works. Then it just stops dead - trying to fast forward, stop anything doesn't happen - you have to eject it from the machine to get it going again.

Then when I try and access the bonus material any one of them sees the first scene come up and it again just locks up - anyone else have these problems.

RE: DREAM THEATER SCORE - coming August 29th! I`m such a perfectionist, you know.

Overall I`m very happy with it. When I shoot 24p advanced and then edit it on a 24p timeline and take it into dvd authoring software and set the dvd format to 23.97 mode, then how can that not be mastering to 24 progressive? Infact, both were shot in 24p. 30 frames per second looks like butt. If you want to see what that looks like, get out your old VHS camera. 30 frames looks terrible. Its the standard in the US for tv but even most tv is switching to the HD format or atleast 24 frames. Yes, it does give you that more cinematic look and feel like the movies. Most importantly, it gives you a smoother feel and look on motion. If you saw anyone move in 30 frames.. it looks terrible. Like bad home movies.

The big difference is the quality of the camera. It looks like Budokan was shot in HD and possibly down converted to standard definition.. which still looks infinitely better than standard definition. Score was not shot on such high end cameras. Not to say that Score looks bad, but that's why there's the difference in the looks. Budokan is very sharp, Score has a warmer feel. Besides, some of the cameras were definetly a DVX... atleast the stuff doing the crowd shots. At the end of disc 2's documentary.. I was the guy jumping in the grey hoodie [very last shot long shot].. that camera went right by me. I'm a film major and I use that camera all the time. Its a great camera, but visually nothing compares to it like HD.

Sorry for the long rant.. but its been eating at me for days.

For the record, L@B was shot and edited 1080/60i then converted to 1080/23.98psf to give it the filmatic blur. Score was shot and edited 1080/23.98psf Then both were down converted to NTSC for DVD. All SD NTSC DVD playback at 29.97i the progressive is a playback function only. NO DVD's are authered in progressive formats. With Blu-Ray or HDDVD that's another story.
As far as the "look" of the two shows, this was a directorial decsion decided before each show was shot. L@B was to have a more "movie" look while Score was to have a more "you are there" look. As far as the cameras, Score actually had much higher quality cameras used.

Thanks! me and my frien were disscussing this, but didn't understand all the technicalities. I'm thinking even if MP wanted to completely overhaul JLB's vox, the funds ($$) simply wouldn't be there. That shit is expensive on a large scale. DT is not a large band with huge amounts of $ to blow (although I'm sure they do well). I wouldn't be suprised if there were minor 'fixes' here and there though. And sure... James' vocals seem to have a lot of the wet removed or not present in the overall sound, but that doesn't indicate they were re-done.

So to the nay sayers of JLB, I say... Rediculous! Many of us were there, and the guy was just on top.

PS - this wasn't really directed at you Powerslave.

+111111 James Labrie was amazing that night. If the video was shot 24p they should have mastered it to 24p on the DVD.(you can actually fit a bit more video in that mode.) Either way it still looks 60i to me.
RE: DREAM THEATER SCORE - coming 8/29/06!

Score is most definately not 24p. When I was capturing still shots I had to correct the interlaced tearing. Also it doesn't look like 24 either. 60i IS the standard in US and a lot of reality shows shoot in that format. Most primetime drama/sci fi shows are indeed shot at 24p and have pulldown added to play at NTSC standard of 60i. BUT even 30p looks different than 60i. 30fps does not look bad like you say, infact I believe Startrek: The Next Generation was shot on film at 30fps. Score doesn't look like it was shot in 24p or 30p but rather 60i. The cam on Mike's drums looks like the Canon XL-H1 or XL2 (but I've been told by some one who worked on it that it was shot in HD which would rule out XL2) Also rules out your hypothesis that DVX's were used, unless it is the HVX which I haven't really looked into much.
RE: DREAM THEATER SCORE; Not available in PAL-format??? Today alone i watched 8V on Score and listened to it twince on the studio album

At first i had to get used to it, because it's a more softer DVD compared to the other ones. Still waiting on it cause it hasn't been released here in Aus yet.

At which point in UAGM did JP drop out? And for how long was it? They obviously did a good job in relpacing the missing part because I havn't noticed a thing yet. I want to know so I can listen to the exact part carefully to see if its at all noticable. Also, did it just drop out from a technical fault? Or did the lead/wireless/whatever he uses just fall out or something?

Sounds so great! Love TROAE. Brilliant opening - so energetic, and really gets the audience going.

Another Won has become a favourite!
RE: DREAM THEATER SCORE - coming 8/29/06!

Rediculous!
