(T8H3X11)

 Two quick ones:

Salem Hill: http://www.salemhill.com/main.html - amazing stuff, except the drummer uses e-drums on some of their albums

Revelation Project: http://www.revelationproject.com/bios.aspx -I think they're heavier, but still very good stuff

I'll let you know on some more later. (PeiProgRocker)

For those who mentioned DCtalk, one of the three main guys Kevin Max has an album out called "Sterotype Be" that was co-produced by Adrian Below( who also plays on it along with Tony Levin). It's very influenced by stuff like Peter Gabriel and world musc. Very cool album.

Other great christian bands that I don't think were mentioned are Guardian, the Kry, and my currant favorite Worship guy David Crowder. David Crowder is awesome, his last cd has a concept album flow to it.

I agree Delirious and Phil Keaggy are awesome (going to see and probably meet Phil Keaggy in January!)

RE: Christian prog metal bands anyone? (liquid_tenor)

Though not real heavy or proggish, Whiteheart's 'Freedom' CD is great-everything on it sounds super!! Also, Petra's Jekyll & Hyde is pretty heavy. For catchy, off-center songs, I would recommend Newsboys' 'Take Me To Your Leader" CD (this was back before all their praise stuff and it's quite fun).

RE: Christian prog metal bands anyone? (mesavox)

Theocracy indeed... although it's more power metal with some nice prog leanings than prog....

Old school Tourniquet. The first three albums (stop the bleeding through Pathogenic Occular Dissonance) are fantastic. The vocals are kind of wierd. Not really growling, not really screaming... kind of a combination of both. LOL. When the guitar player sings it's just yelling. LOL

Vinnie Domine is superb. Queensryche type prog only heavier. Excellent vox.

As said, definately Neal Morse.

The DC Talk et al mention was interesting... definately not prog. LOL. However, DC Talk's last album, Supernatural is very Queen, Sting, and U2 influenced. Those three guys are always very underated.

Balance of Power wasn't really a christian band nor really prog. Again, just power metal with prog leanings. On that note though, Shadow Gallery is a little more a christian band than BOP (more members claim to be christians ... Lance King was the only one I know if in BOP that claimed to be so, and wrote a lot from that standpoint.)

Anything with Kerry Livgren in it (his mid 80s project "AD" is most excellent) or John Elefante is going to have some nice prog moments. Even John's pop solo albums have some great prog moments. His Defying Gravety disc is superb... just superb. His Mastadon project is also outstanding 80s hair prog. LOL

Read this thread for more.... http://p216.ezboard.com/fnealmorsefrm7.showMessage?topicID=120.topic

Keep in mind that not being a "CCM Christian band" does not make the people in the band not christians. By the method attributing BOP a Christian band, it woudl be more than fair and equal to attribute DT a christian band with more than one member claiming to be believers.... Christians are people just like anyone else, with loves, dislikes, and the need to make a living.
RE: Christian prog metal bands anyone? (DoorT)

Almost every current Christian metal band growls for some reason, or at least the ones you can go to your local music store and buy. This has been the case for a little while. Disciple would be a great one to get, up until their new album they were getting heavier and heavier. They were like a good mix between Sevendust and the heavier side of Skid Row. I would personally recommend their albums "Back Again" or "By God". They have a new one and it is a lot more trendy and poppy sounding like they decided to add elements of Hoobastank and Linkin Park to their sound, your young people should really get into it.

Check out Skillet's "Collide" album it is very heavy with no growls. Tourniquet still puts stuff out every once in a while, but personally I find there newer stuff to be pretty cheesy and not something youth kids will get into much, but there first few albums are very good, my favorite being "Pathogenic Ocular Dissonance".

I am not sure how long ago, but way back in the day the band Tiles had a song on an HM Magazine sampler cd. They are on Inside Out records and I believe have toured with Dream Theater at some point. HM is a bi-monthly mag that covers Christian hard music, Heaven's Metal is a newer/older version of HM. HM used to be called Heaven's Metal back in the day now they are HM, but they recently started up the mag again to cover metal more in particular instead of hard rock music as a whole.

On a side note I have a Christian prog/metal/hard rock band that I started two years ago, we are in the process of recording our demo. I play drums and sing lead in it. I will try to post some stuff when our website gets going and we have stuff to post.
RE: Christian prog metal bands anyone? (Godzilla)

Atomic Opera and Galactic Cowboys are most definitely a good start, given they were both produced by Sam Taylor, but can I also recommend PFR? They are a bit more mainstreamy, but Goldie's Last Day, Them, etc are fantastic! Joel (not the kid in the avatar) the singer/guitarist is a very good writer, and they have worked with Phil Keaggy (another highly recomended musician to anyone) and Adrian Belew (Pour Me Out, one other song with PFR that I can't remember) to name a few. If you can handle rap, then most definitely old PoD. Brown is a most excellent start for them. Preach is by far one of the most driving songs of theirs, and wow, it just owns me every time.

WhiskeyJackle recommended Becoming the Archetype, and I listened, and lo, I loveth as well. I just need to purchaseth this cd..eth. haha Wireless router first!

Too bad you don't like the growlies. Extol Undeceived is what got me into death metal.

BTW- Get Petra Praise, and listen to Holy of Holies, if you aren't seriously moved by that version of the old song, then you have no soul. I also LOVE John the Revelator by Phil Keaggy. (SteveJohnson)

I'm afraid the trouble with a lot of the Christian bands is the extreme cheesiness of the lyrics. For example, this little gem from Petra:

They laid Him in His tomb
They thought they'd sealed His doom
But He rose
He rose
He came, He saw, He conquered death and hell
He came, He saw, He is alive and well

In any case, Petra is neither prog nor metal. Back in the day, White Heart actually had some great tunes, but they probably won't stand the test of time. You MAY be able to pass off one or two Petra tunes, but I'm not holding my breath.

I would go with some tunes from POD. There are a few bands like Pillar and Thousand foot Krutch that tend to be bad copycats, but POD has got some great stuff to pick from, especially the newer stuff.

Extol will have some good tunes to pick from on Blueprint Dives, and less but better tunes on Synergy.

Make sure to check out Blindside's About a Burning Fire.

Anberlin, Beloved, and a few other bands on Solid State might be worth your time too.

Also, if you click on my banner you'll find some cool clothing stuffs that the kids will dig in a BIG way.
RE: Christian prog metal bands anyone?
