I love his kit too. His toms sound so amazing. Can't wait to hear him in action on the new Toto album.

Not being a fan of Toto can somebody recommend me some fine Simon Phillips drumwork. I have Derek Sherinian's Black Utopia album and thought the playing was so-so but I know Simon is capable of so much more.

I didn't know he was an open-handed player.  Any vids?

There may be drummers out there that may have more technique that Simon, but Simon is my all time favorite drummer.

Check out these releases with Simon on drums.

Simon Phillips - Out Of The Blue Live. IMO the best ever recorded LIVE drum sound, ever. Checkout the tune Jungleyes on this CD. An aboslute must have for any Simon Phillips fan

Simon Phillips - Symbiosis
Simon Phillips - Another Lifetime
Toto - Mindfields
Toto - Livefields
Toto -  25th. Anniversary Live in Amsterdam - DVD

I'd suggest you go and get Derek's album "Inertia". The title-song is amazing, and so is the song "Rhapsody in black", which was co-written by Virgil Donati.

Great stuff!

Any vids?

He released 2 instructional videos in 1992. "Simon Phillips" and "Simon Phillips Returns" ( with one of the best drum solos I EVER heard ). You can also check out the Steve Lukather & Los Lobotomys DVD from a gig in 1994 and the Toto - Live In Amsterdam DVD from their 25th tour in 2003. Great videos with Simon on open-handed playing.

He basically always plays Open-handed when he plays with 2 double-bass drums ( which he basically always does!  ). When he plays with his acoustic Jazz kit with one bass drum, He usually plays right-handed.

By open-handed, I assume you mean : left hand hitting left HH, and right hand hitting snare ? because that's something I started to develop some weeks ago. Pretty interesting.

So-so?  Simon Phillips?

I guess I need some crack!

I think my favorite track is "Dancing Man" from the first Buddy Rich "Burning for Buddy" CD.

Agree. I'm a Priest fan , and the drumming on that one album is great. It's also my favorite priest cd. I always wondered what would've happened if Simon had remained to play on a few of their following albums, even if he hadn't played live...

Open handed is sooooo comfortable.  I love it!  However I think the crossed cymbal booms in front look dumb.

Alright guys. Here are some Toto songs which are very progressive and have some outstanding guitarplaying by Steve Lukather and some cool drumming and time signatures by Simon Phillips. This might also change the opinion of people who think that Toto is a "ballad-band".

HERE : http://rapidshare.de/files/5093062/06_-_Jake_To_The_Bone.mp3.html Is a Live recording from 2000 in France, a song called "Jake To The Bone." Written in 1992.

AND HERE :http://rapidshare.de/files/5126029/11_-_Dave_s_Gone_Skiing.mp3.html is a song called "Dave's Gone Skiing" from Toto's Tambu album released in 1995

You download the songs by first clicking on the link, then scroll down a bit, press "Free", then scroll down some more, wait for the seconds at the bottom to end and after they have, the download will automaticlly start! :)
