This isnt the last album!! As many people have mentioned, and so has Mike in an interview, TGP, TDP and TROAE are parts of a 12 step thing, and there are still 5 to go.

ORIGINAL: motorhead9999 I guess its my turn to spill my 2 cents... For the Octavarium image (the star in the octagon pic), its clear to me that its an architectural layout diagram, like something done in AutoCAD for building layouts. It seems that on each of the directional sides (north, south, east, and west faces) of the octagon are what is usually a symbol for doors in these types of diagrams. Only one of the doors is open (the south face), maybe symbolizing the whole notion of starting off the story where it ended. You enter through the only open door (the beginning of the CD)and have to make your way around the Octavarium, and when you get back to where you started, you can choose to leave and move on, or you can repeat the same cycle again, getting trapped in the Octavarium. Yes, I like this. I was looking at it yesterday. the songs are identified on the map. 1:8, 2:8, etc. It starts on a wall. I found this interesting, that the walls seemed to line up with songs about "me" and the windows about "you" (are the octavarium walls reflective perhaps?); the door about if it was worth it to carry on. A way out. I just looked at it quick though. It's sitting at the studio. I'll look at it again tonight.

ORIGINAL: Morte Disclaimer: This is not a 'the cover sucks because the string is too short' post. I just noticed something... This might've been obvious, but I think that if the swinging balls were to REPLACE the ball they're swinging towards (to the left or to the right, depending on the front and inside cover, respectively), then the strings would be of perfect length. Whether this was delibrate or a mistake on Hugh Syme's part by making the wrong ball swing is unclear to me. And if it was the latter, I don't really care; the music is what matters anyway. maybe it was pointed out already, but if not, my best guess so far the reason the outside wires are shorter is from the kid holding the can pulling them. Also the very ending..which is different than the leaked version as MP confirmed, the thing I thought of right away was Fates Warning A Pleasant Shade of Gray..that patch is identical after having played APSOG this morning. If the pattern continues, the next album will begin with that patch. Kyle

I found this. As reported on the back of the album: Songs 1-4 = 1495 seconds Songs 5-7 = 1471 seconds Song 8var = 1440 seconds Now follow this equation: ((((1495 + 1471) + 8) / ((1440 * 2) - 1)) ^8)^8 = 8 The "-1" represents the CD that I bought.

ORIGINAL: MorteSpeaking of potential anomalies, in my booklet the lyrics for Part III of Octavarium (the Full Circle part) say: flying off the handle with careful with that axe eugene... [etc] When I think it might have to say flying off the handle be careful with that axe eugene... [etc] Although, I can't really tell if James is singing "be" or "with". Nono. "Handle with care"... Travelling Willburys I believe. Also, I should also point out "Dave's Not Here" which is Cheech and Chong

ORIGINAL: lejoker23 ORIGINAL: Morte That's a good point, but until I heard the XM MP interview, I actually assumed that The Root Of All Evil was the last part, making it a trilogy... no, MP said on XM that this is NOT a trilogy. there are 12 steps, and they've already done 7. 5 steps remaining --> 2 songs certainly. Could it be that MP is writing this '12 step' song as he's goinng through the process? I mean, MP started the AA process in 2000 (while on the Met. tour i guess...) So it could be a possibility. Also, the people saying that this is DT's last album...i highly doubt it. The whole 'reading into things too much, and overanalyzing' MP was saying in the XM interview is true, and i understand now why the band decided to keep this album so under wraps. Some people just pick things apart too much.

ORIGINAL: dkepner There are a lot of things on this CD that seem to hint at it being the last. Never Enough: "what would you say, if I walked away, would you appreciate, but then it'd be too late". Octavarium: "the calls of admirers, who claim they adore, drain all your lifeblood while begging for more". The stop sign and eight ball mentioned above. Man, some of you people are RIDICULOUS. Here's what the "Intervals" section means. (I'm copying these lyrics from some online source because I don't have the time to transcribe the lyrics --- I know they are wrong, but you'll get the idea!) Starting in the key of F... (ironicly the last note of TOT) (FIRST) Our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath / Remove all obstacles from our paths --- summary of The Root Of All Evil, the first track...in the key of F...the root or first of the scale (SECOND) Asking questions, search for clues / The answer's been right in front of you -- summary of The Answer Lies Within, the second track...in the key of G...the second of the scale (THIRD) We try to break through, long to connect / We fall on death ears with failed muted breath -- summary of These Walls, the third track...in the key of A...the third of the scale (FOURTH) Loyalty, trust, faith in desire / Carries love through each darkest fire -- summary of I Walk Beside You, the fourth track...the fourth of the scale (FIFTH) Tortured insanity, smothering hell / Try to escape but to no avail -- summary of Panic Attack, the fifth track...the fifth of the scale (SIXTH) They call them admirers, claim they adore / Drain all your life blood but begging for more -- summary of Never Enough, the sixth track...the sixth of the scale (SEVENTH) Innocent phantoms for merciless crimes / I'll pray to some madness for repulsive designs (wow - who butchered this transcription? LOL) -- summary of Sacrificed Sons, the seventh track...the seventh of the scale (OCTAVE) Step out of step and try controlling my fate / When you finally start living it's become to late -- summary of Octavarium, the eighth track...the octave of the scale If you listen closely, especially with headphones, you will hear a clip from each corresponding track in the background as James sings the lyrical summaries. The easiest clip to hear is Never Enough's "What would you say?" but I assure you they are all there...and while James is screaming "TRAPPED INSIDE THIS OCTAVARIUM", you can even hear JR's lap steel guitar riff. You think it's coincidence the section is named "Intervals"? And the whole connection with 8:5 can be taken many ways. 8th album, 5 band members. 8 white keys, 5 black keys in an octave, etc. If this post contains any incorrect terminology, I apologize in advance.

I wonder what the star inscribed inside the octobarn drawing represents. I have to say it doesn't leave me with any positive feelings as to the meaning of it. It seems to say that the star is trapped inside the workings of the music, the business, and the lyrics of Never Enough back this up to a point.

And when you divide 24 by 8, you get 3... And as been mentioned earlier, the album is in 3 parts (roughly 25 minutes each... Tracks 1-4, tracks 5-7, and track 8). 3 is also the number of original members currently in the band...

ORIGINAL: keys76 He will do it live. I've seen the new stand....awesome! Jeroen ORIGINAL: faizoff ORIGINAL: Idrumbad Paraphrased directly fromm the mouth of JR tonight: "I play the 4 plus minute intro on the steel lap guitar and then switch to my continuum." Very cool. Wonder if he'll do it live as well. That would be so awesome. So who is going to play the backing keys while Rudess is playing the steel? Maybe Myung can resurrect his Nightmare Cinema role...

ORIGINAL: blu4ea 1) Did anyone hear the 'footsteps' at the beginning of TROAE? Reminiscent of SFAM. 2) At 4:38 in TW, the melody reminds me of "Wrapped Around My Finger" by The Police. 3) Doesnt 'Medicate' sound a lot like 'Voices'?? I've posted it before in another topic: 4) 8V (the song) around 9:45 - reminds me of "Shores of Avalon", Mullmuzzler

You have to think that MP is reading this thread and saying to himself: "Wow, I haven't even thought of HALF of these nuggets!" Translation: We're coming up with nuggets on 8V that DT didn't even know they put in. It's like finding pictures of things in cloud formations. Keep looking hard enough, and you'll find what you're looking for, even if you have to sort of invent it. It is fascinating to see what this forum has found. This takes the cake from "Paul Is Dead" clue searching.

First, just gotta say, I'm loving 8V, the album and song. Now to the point, around 13:50 on Octavarium, the riff reminds me soo much of a riff I've heard somewhere else before, but I can't put my finger on it. Anyone else hear it too? BTW, sorry if this was brough up before, but there's about 100 threads on the album already, and I didn't really feel like reading them all.

I believe it's on the title track, 1 of the 1st movements..the lyrics are quite similar to Rush's Animate edit:..ok maybe that's slightly a stretch, but it popped into my head: in the 2nd movement, James keeps saying the word "me" as the last word of the phrase and that's how that rang a bell. Also, again I haven't been religious about this, but I count a total of 8 birds in the artwork. Nothing huge, but another to add if it hasn't been yet. The key signatures I am struggling with. Is the song being played in that key?..or is there supposed to anything more?..the time sigs obviously are 1-8 from track numbers..but I think that's been posted more than once already. Kyle

ORIGINAL: Morte ORIGINAL: Del Fuvio Monk Though I can see where some of you are coming from thinking that this album seems to the bands final hoora, lets us not forget that they still have to complete the AA saga. That's a good point, but until I heard the XM MP interview, I actually assumed that The Root Of All Evil was the last part, making it a trilogy... First of all, the epic piano ending. Second, the bells at the end - that's how the saga begins in The Glass Prison. I hope I'm wrong, of course. The more DT albums, the better (especially if they're as good as this one!). Well he did say on XM that this is parts 5 and 6 of the 12 steps. He said it will take more albums to complete it and he'd like to play it in it's entireity some day. However this could be their last per say with Atlantic.

I like how near the end of the title track during "trapped inside this octavarium," if you listen somewhat closely, you can hear snippets of other songs in the record. It makes me think it is a story album. And I'm tellin' ya. That 15/8 bassline came at about 16:40 in the title track. It matches the drums Just like mike said it does

Something that came to me which I don't think was mentioned before. What if each of the songs represents one of their albums? Obviously the last track would represent Octavarium. What about the rest of the songs? Never Enough could represent Train of Thought, considering the criticism it got from a lot of the fans. Any others fit well?

As reported on the back of the album: Songs 1-4 = 1495 seconds Songs 5-7 = 1471 seconds Song 8var = 1440 seconds Now follow this equation: ((((1495 + 1471) + 8) / ((1440 * 2) - 1)) ^8)^8 = 8 The "-1" represents the CD that I bought. Being the math geek that I am I decided to verify that formula. It took me a while to come up with your answer until I realized that you're missing a right paren: ((((1495 + 1471) + 8) / ((1440 * 2) - 1)) ) ^8)^8 = 8 And that really equals 7.986475
