Red Eye Flights - Thursday, May 26, 2005 11:31 AM
Whoa...
Just did the red eye flight from Los Angeles to Boston and boy are my arms tired Not fun even in 1st class. I feel like I'm really drunk and I don't know what time (it really is) Who else has taken the red eye?

I LOVE the red eye. You save a full day when traveling from the West coast to the East coast. I do the red eye every year from Orange County to Newark as I attend a trade show there. I can also sleep on the plane, so that's why I do it. I fall asleep shortly after take-off and wake-up during the final approach. Otherwise, you waste a full day traveling back with the time change.

Red eye flights means flying long distances at night. You usally cross a couple of timezones and it is difficult to sleep becuase of noice engines ect. Thank good I put "Trial of Tears" from LAB on repeat while I slept. Like I left LAX at 9:45pm their time and arrived in Boston at  6:00am boston time even though it is a 5 and a half hour flight. My clock is all effed up!!!

Did the Red Eye when flying from Rhein-Main Airbase, Germany or Fort Braag, NC.

What a godforsaken flight, never again.

Try Washington - London - Bombay . . . that flight SUCKS!

For people who can't sleep on airplanes - ask your doctor to prescribe you Ambien.  It's a sleep aid medication meant for travelers.  It gives you 5 decent hours of sleep (although I've had up to 8) and is great for people who otherwise can't sleep on airplanes.  Plus, when you wake up, there's no grogginess.

I used to take those to/from LA all the time. It can suck, but you don't waste a day, so that part is cool. I've been able to learn to sleep on planes, so I usually get a couple of hours of sleep. It helps if I'm listening to the MP3 player and/or if there's an awful movie on the plane. A bad film will put me right out.

Doing a 10:30PM departure to the UK, then France this summer. That should be interesting...

Not on the flight subject but i had to endure a 13 and a half hour bus journey from Perth(Scotland) to London, unable to sleep due to kids shouting and screaming. Left at 6am and got to my hotel at 7.30pm. UNBEARABLE

Red eyes are teh shit. Saves time, and usually money, so it's all good. I love to fly, but don't travel much for business or pleasure at this point in my life, which is fine by me.

Longest flight I've ever been on was Chicago->Honolulu; about 8 hours. It was weird to have that much time on a plane, because flying anywhere in the US from Chicago is usually not more than 2-3 hours. On the way back, we left Honolulu at 5PM and got into Chicago at 6AM the next day. THAT was interesting. Went straight to the golf course and started drinking! Jet lag be damned!

I did them weekly when I was working on a project in Utah. I got to the point that I was asleep before all of the passengers were on the plane.

London to Dubai to Hyderabad is 12 hours in flight. The stop I've had in Dubai was less than 2 hours. I've travelled back and forth so many times and always feel like shit when reaching Hyderabad.
I'm dreading my journey to Tampa in a few weeks. All of the above plus the 9 hour flight from London to Florida. 21 hours on the plane! maybe a 6 hour layover in London so that makes it about a 30 hour journey. And the Nomad lasts only 14 hours. I seriously hope I can sleep on the plane for my own good.

Keith's is worse but mine is close.  My flight back from Nairobi, Kenya was like this:

-Plane took off from Nairobi at something like 6pm Wed night local time
-Land in Amsterdam almost 10 hours later at about 6am Amsterdam time, layover for about 4 hours
-Land in Newark, NJ about 8 hours later at around 2pm Eastern Time
-Run to catch plan to Denver, land in Denver at about 7:30 Thursday night
-Get luggage, catch 1hr bus ride, get home about 10pm Thursday night

I felt like I was going to die for the next 2 days.  I was hurting.  Something like 21 hours in the air and 28 hours of straight travel across 11 time zones.

Even with all the horror stories, this thread makes me want to take a loooong vacation. I've been out of the US, but just to Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. I would love to go to some of the places that you guys are talking about, jet lag or not!

The trip was absolutely worth the horrific jet lag ...no doubt of that.  Jet lag would never stop me from going on a trip like that again.  It's funny that the jet lag going the other way is nothing at all.  I felt fine the next morning after we landed.
