Let's Write Microfiction
Friday, May 06, 2005 2:33 PM
( permalink)
Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in only six words, and came up with this: "For Sale: Baby Shoes, Never Worn." He would later claim it to be the best thing he had ever written. Well, now it's the MP forum's turn. The only rule is that your story must contain exactly six words. For example: Zombies arrived, now I eat brains. or I'm dying! Wait, no. Just gas. or Went skydiving and forgot my parachute. Have fun.

In a blatant rip off of what he wrote (which the more I think about it, the more clever I realize it was), you can do a few version that play on his idea. For sale: Wedding ring, never worn. But I'm trying to think of something unique that's as interesting.

Don't awaken, the real world awaits... How does he explain his six words as a story (and/or) best thing he ever wrote? Hope I'm not gonna get screwed for asking this...

ORIGINAL: willyjones How does he explain his six words as a story (and/or) best thing he ever wrote? Hope I'm not gonna get screwed for asking this... Well, I won't "screw" ya for asking. I think it's clever, but I didn't get it at first. Someone has put up baby shoes, that were never worn, for sale. So what's the deal? The first thing that comes to mind (for me) is that someone lost their child (or had a miscariage) or some such thing before the shoes were even needed. That makes ya feel bad. So already, from a six-word story, he's evoked an emotion from his reader. That's pretty impressive. Some of these are just six word sentences that don't tell any story at all.

ORIGINAL: Rane Some of these are just six word sentences that don't tell any story at all. Mine told a riviting and chilling tale. A man is stuck in a dire situation, but his inability to deal with his emotions has forced him to look for an activity which will make him forget his troubles. Why is this man locked in the basement? Perhaps it is for the same reasons as stated above. Perhaps he couldn't show emotions to his family, and thus he turned to drinking, much the same way as his father had done so many years ago. Maybe because of his drinking his wife and kids locked him in the basement so they would be able to get out, hmmmm. Yet this small man tries to forget the mess that he's in with a placebo in boardgame form? But mostly I just pulled my story out of my ass

Well, I won't "screw" ya for asking. Darn! That would've been the easiest one all week. But seriously, thanks for taking the time to explain it. I guess what I meant was, is he really telling a story? Or is he evoking a feeling from something more like "prose"? I don't see the story part. Seems more like something related to poetry. Y kno? Anyway....I guess it's like a fill in the blanks/make up your own mind....and I imagine it was posted for our fun more than tearing it apart or discussing the Crapopolis that is literature (jk....words and books are cool: if your name is Geek McNerd du-huh). I think I got a bit of the "ask a stupid question bug" and the "after drinking a Venti coffee, post a god-awful reply that only you think is funny and will forever make you known as one of the idiots on this site" In conclusion, it looks like a regular day - I screwed myself. Thanks...

Cars collide; a cure never found. Missed my flight and avoided crashing. Dusty pictures found of unknown people. Missed my train but i'm alive. Rane let E-Bay consume his life. Portnoy could have continued those deliveries. She gave up on him returning. how horrific are my attempts at this. I think I get it, but i'm not sure.
