Something about his ride on WD&DU DVD has been bothering me for awhile now. It sounds (at times) like it has rivets. But I'm almost 100% positive he doesn't have any rivets.

Can anybody solve this mystery for me?

I think he was playing with zildjian at the time, he switched to sabian when I&W came out....so it might be because the different make. It might be a A series I dont know....

I haven't seen or heard the dvd yet, but if it isn't a deliberate effect, it could be just some recording defect or error.

If it was deliberate, I don't think MP would switch out his trusty ride for a riveted one, so if he was going for a certain "sizzle" effect, he might have used beads. It's like dangling bathtub-plug chain down the bow of your ride, and it creates a neat sizzle effect.

Other than that, that's all I can think of. Perhaps the Man himself could elaborate.

I'm talking about the recent live performance.

It almost sounds like it is hitting one of his other cymbals. The only word that comes to mind is "clanging." Maybe the monster wasn't set up perfectly that day.

Or maybe the mics weren't set as good.

He does stack his cymbals pretty tight, so they may have been hitting another cymbal or maybe even a rim on a drum.

Yeah thats what im thinking too. I remember seeing a video and his ride was hitting other cymbals and rims occasionally.

watch it explode, while it’s not impossible for flowers to bloom and grow, next to graves, and babies are born in the same buildings where people go, to pass away, to pass away.....

Mike's ride cymbal is set really close above his 12" rack tom. It tends to make a "sizzle" noise as the cymbal vibrates when it touches the rim. I haven't really concentrated on the WDADRU DVD but i've seen Mike do it a lot on the Budokan DVD. When he tends to hit the ride hard it moves around hitting the rim of his tom.

Yea, I thought about starting this thread a while back.
On LAB it bothers me to no end (well, not really hahaha, I've just got one of those sound techy kinda ears that catches those kinda things) But yea it's definetly rubbin' up against something up in there.... (horny little ride you!)
I have this problem continuously man! ALWAYS too close to my low toms! And then there was this time I set up my ride cymbal holder to close to it, that was funny.... oh well, what can ya do?!

i dont think it was hitting the rim, if you look really close you can see it cranking the boom arm for the china. i would know this cause it bugged the hell outta me the whole time i watched it

Thanks everyone for your input! Now I can sleep easier at night knowing my ears aren't playing tricks on me.

MP can do whatever he wants (after all he is The Man), but if my kit ever gets so large that I experience these problems then I know it's time to cut back on the cymbals.
