I've been meaning to check out the Zola Jesus record for a month or so, on the other hand Strange Mercy is quite a slow burner.. surprising to hear the girl let her hair down and come up with a rougher sound this time around. Good shit. Speaking of slow burners, the latest Wire LP, Red Barked Tree, is quite a fucking delight.

Pinche, do yourself a favor and download one of her recent performances off the NPR website. She even adds more ferocity to songs old and new with her mean guitar tone and vocal delivery. Edit: I'd post the link but I'd not risk getting banninated. You can google NPR St Vincent Live and that should do it.

PincheJoto when did I turn into a hipster? Actually, the hipster term has become so overused these days that it's been virtually emptied of all meaning. I didn't like a lot of the typical Pitchfork-style hypes this year though (sadly including some of the stuff you guys mentioned, to be perfectly honest), so I guess I'm on the safe side. On the other hand, I did like Liturgy... Guess I'm a hipster after all...

Dude, Liturgy was the perfect definition of NEKROGRIMMEDGLASSES, and the Atlas Sound I see in your signature just makes you a li'l bit more guilty

Actually, Atlas Sound is only there because I want my my sig to be a faithful representation of what I listened to the previous week. Doesn't always mean I enjoyed those albums. I gave it a chance, listened to it all the way through, but I didn't really get much out of it and don't feel like spinning it again (same with the Lynch album). I'm not even that much of a Deer Hunter fan, but Halcyon Digest was definitely a lot more captivating to me than Parallax.

Has anyone of you heard Magazine's new comeback album? I've got to say, I was very skeptical, given that a full 30 years have passed since their last one, but wow, they still sound as fresh as ever. Well, maybe not quite as fresh since there's a stronger focus on quieter sounds and slower rhythms this time, but No Thyself really doesn't sound like it's been 33 years since Real Life. Much better than Wire's new one.

Yeah, I saw the teaser clip on youtube and I've been frothing at the mouth ever since... like I said, the Wire LP is quite a grower, wasn't too thrilled about it at first but it's making more and more sense to me with each spin; unlike the new Gang of Four, which seems kinda contrived.

Have to give Wire another chance then. I thought it was okay, but nothing too spectacular. Maybe it'll change with repeated listens. As you can probably guess from my current signature, now would be the perfect time to give it another listen anyway cause I'm really in the mood for that sort of post-punk-ish fare. Gang of Four's newest I haven't listened to so far, but they've never been part of my group of favourite post punk bands. I gave Entertainment! another shot last week (hence, the sig pic), but while it's good it's nowhere near, say, Pink Flag, Real Life, etc. It's got a great overall sound and style, but no memorable songs.

Gang of Four were never really about superb hooks, but rather the interplay between the players is what grabbed me about them. The way they swing is just a little bit hamfisted, but in a good way.

That may be, but without hooks there's no real reason for me to go back to it. I'll keep on trying though cause, like I said, I really like their style. That said, I listened to Content and Red Barked Tree the other day and, to be honest, I like Content a little bit more. Just a very tiny bit, but still. I've started to compile my year-end top 100 list this weekend and currently, Content is just a single step above Red Barked Tree. They're at #66 and #67, respectively. Magazine's new one on the other hand is at #15. That may still change, of course, as I haven't really put much thought into the list yet and No Thyself is fresh in my mind compared to some of the year's earlier releases, but it's definitely up there. Top 20 or at the very least top 30 material.

Oh wow. I love Magazine. This is good news to me. Anyway, any thoughts on Blut Aus Nord's 777: The Desanctification?

I need time to catch up on these goddamned releases! Only heard the first part of Blut Aus Nord's trilogy, and it's easily their most engaging record since The Work which... how does this new one stack up?
