Misplaced Childhood 20th Anniversary

Yup, 20 years this year. (OK, so I was late to the party and just started getting into Marillion a little over a year ago...sue me) I guess we'll have to do a SA thread, but lets wrap up CaS and Script first Anyways, the two SA threads prompted me to check out Fish's website and I poked around there a bit. Come to find out Fish is doing a "Return to Childhood" tour to mark the event, A handful of UK dates are scheduled and European and South American dates are in the works. There's apparently going to be a live album and DVD made of it. I also found this somewhat cryptic statement in one of his emails (Jan 27, 05)

Chris Kimsey is on line to produce a 5-1 surround sound mix of the original album recordings as well as the live recordings of the 2005 tour. I have had discussions with "Marillion" and we are both agreed that this should happen if certain criteria are met with EMI regarding the release of the 5-1 project. All things going well this would be released to coincide with my anniversary tour and "Marillion's" own touring of mainland Europe in late 2005. Communication is open.

I wonder if that last bit means anything or am I just getting my hopes too high in wild speculation???

What is certain is that Fish is touring for the occassion. However, from his Feb 9, 05 email we find out that North American dates are at this point unlikely :

There have been quite a few enquiries regarding possible US/Canada touring activities but I regret to say that there are no plans in the immediate future mainly due to financial constraints. It is not being totally ruled out but to embark on a campaign in North America requires firm guarantees if I am to avoid previous "fogbound" ventures.
Any suggestions on festivals or other touring possibilities are welcome and any help you can provide with promotional support on forthcoming dates is sincerely appreciated. I can be contacted at fish at the-company.com if you have any ideas or require support for promotional activities.

I don't know about the feasibility of it, but I just got to daydreaming about it and decided that Fish opening or co-headlining with DT would be sweet and would appeal to a large part of the DT fan base, and likely a fair portion of Fish/Marillion's as well. Especially with DD apparently performing one of Mike's favorite albums.

Thoughts? Opinions? Further speculation and rumor?

Excellent idea Rag! Would be awesome to see... would fit in nicely with the (alleged) proggier sound of the new album too. We can dream.

It is interesting to note there is a vastly higher probability of Dream Theater playing a song live from the Misplaced Childhood album than there is of Marillion doing so in the near future.

would love to see it, and I read on the Marillion Forum back in the fall that Fish was going to do this. I also read that a reunion show was going to happen with Fish and Marillion eventually. It's not a matter of if, but when according to something I read that Pete said.

however, wouldn't DT be doing "Evening With"?..or rather, if they continue the pattern they have for seemingly the last 5 or 6 tours..

they tour Evening With for the 1st leg, and then Co-headline or Open in last summer's case the 2nd leg. Now their may only be 1 leg so maybe that is telling enough.

it would be a wonderful thing to happen if it did, regardless..I'd like to see Fish either way..have him sign my Vinyl re-issue of MC that the other 4 already did..hehe.

I think it's great that FIsh is doing this. But I still have a hard time adjusting the his much lower vocal range these days. I downloaded a DVD of a show in WAshington DC back in 2000 where he did Hotel Hobbies, warm wet circles etc... he changed all the melodies to fit his voice. it's weird.

Fogbound refers to his last US dates where everything when charlie fox

He cancelled several dates due to a throat infection and then released a limited edition CD called Candlelight in fog with some terrible vocals on it. But he needed to because of the contract and to cover his touring costs

I guess a support slot on a bigger tour would be really great for him

Having Marillion (the original line-up) touring with Dream Theater is something we'll never see, but the thought makes me very happy! Even Fish, doing the whole MC would give me wood!

The thing is that Fish is already planning to go out on tour to perform misplaced childhood(in Europe and south america). People are just suggesting that he go on tour with DT to help cover his costs for a north american tour.

I remember him saying about 10 years ago that he would never consider taking an opening slot on a tour anymore. Maybe Mike has already made past inquiries about this.

For those interested, Fish did do all of Misplaced Childhood with his band in 2002 for the fan club which was later released as part of his Fools Company DVD. It has it's moments, just don't expect it to be 1985 all over again.

Mark Wilkinson moves into full-on airbrushing on the "Return to Childhood" artwork this week and he will be using the original model for the MC sleeve artwork, Robert Mead, as the main subject in his new exploration of the piece twenty years on.

I saw them open for Rush that year. The infamous date at the Joe Louis Arena where they where getting coins thrown at them. Suck!

I believe they also did a date at Harpos Concert Theater that year, but I did not know about it. It was hard to get info on Marillion in 86' and I missed the show. Would have been excellent.

However, I made up for it on the CAS 87'tour where they played the now defunked Ritz nighclub on the east side of Detroit. I heard about it the day of the show. It was awesome, even though I remember Fish being sick...

If you want to see Fish perform Misplaced Childhood, check out the Fool's Company DVD. I admire him for having a go at it, but I'm afraid his voice just isn't up to it any more. While watching it was a great nostalgia trip, I winced every time he tried and failed to hit a high note. Changing the vocal melodies to suit his restricted range is an unfortunate necessity.

That's an impressive run of shows in 86! My only regret in 86 is not seeing Metallica with Cliff. I remember when they opened for Ozzy and I almost went. Not seeing Stevie Ray is another regret.

No.......I was lucky enough to see them at the Montreal Forum opening for Rush in '86. A brilliant show that was well appreciated by the prog mad Quebec crowd who had already been converted to Marillion. I've been a diehard ever since.....

Unfortunately, I have to agree with the comment about the Fool's Company dvd. Fish has lost his voice, and it's rather sad to watch him croak his way through the old songs. The Sunsets dvd from '97 is the last time he really had it.....

Still hoping for one last tour in NA though.....

If I remember correctly, this tour and the live album/DVD he hopes will give him a monetary cushion to be able to take time off from touring and concentrate on acting/auditions for a while. His daughter is moving back in with him to go to school in Scotland and he wants to be around instead of on the road. He'll still tour he says, but it'll be scheduled around her school year. Something like that. I pieced that together from a few bits in some of the "Emails from Fish"

Yes a big mistake amongst others in Fish's solo career decisions(and even back to Marillion days).
And he's also been very unlucky sometimes.

I hope that one day there'll be a good biography (a serious one, not the half true half romanced one he has been working on the last few months) as his life is very rich and deserves it.

Duke, you've one up'd me on the Marillion. I wasn't able to see them headline in '86. I only saw them for 50 minutes -2 nights in a row. Oh yeah, some guys touting some new CD which featured boring songs like Territories and Middletown Dreams headlined that evening. They were okay, I guess

I saw them March 31 and April 1, 1986 at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford opening for some OBSCURE Canadian power trio. Aside from an abreviated Pseudo Silk Kimono, we got the whole album those nights. Even have a full ticket from each night that I scooped from a friend that couldn't get rid of them.

VERY poor solo business decisions. Not just EMI, but Polygram and Roadrunner. Got burned badly. Very sad. I think he would make some money talking about his life, like Rollins does. It would be relatively inexpensive to come to the U.S. by himself and do the club circuit. That would be a cool thing to see, but then I'd pay to hear Neil Peart speak too (Not that it would ever happen, unless he's forced into a book tour!)

I was so pissed when I went to see Rush the 2nd time..and The Fabulous Thunderbirds opened up Marillion should have stayed on that tour. I got screwed again the next month when Ozzy cancelled his show here in 86 when Metallica opened up. He lost his voice in SF the night before and could not sing the next day. When he rescheduled 2 weeks later,Metallica went to Europe and Blue Oyster Cult filled in. I did get to see Cliff play on the Ride The Lightning tour though.

He's been working on a "fictional autobiography" called "Living with Dick" in the recent months. That could be an interesting read. Although I would also love to read a "real" biography of Fish in the way Separated Out is to Marillion.

As for the Return to Childhood tour, it seems it's not financially viable for him to tour in North America these days (because of the exchange rate I guess), especially because on this tour he plans to have a full stage and ligts set up with back projections etc ...

Having said that Marillion did tour in NA last fall, they chose not to bring the whole "Marbles" full production because it wasn't financially viable in America, and the aim was to not lose any money.
In the end it worked so well that not only they didn't lose any money but even have some profits, selling out many nights on that tour. So who know ?

Marillion now plans to go back for new US tour next june, maybe followed by a South American tour encouraged by the good record and ticket sales since last fall in America.

Nope... you're not alone. I saw Marillion do MC twice - Dec 85 (Birmihngham NEC)  & June 86 (Milton Keynes Bowl). Both awesome shows and that period of time 85 & 86 remain IMO Marillion's live peak and I've seen them plenty of times since then but only the CAS shows came close to the magic that was Marillion during the MC tour when the band were at the very top of their game.

I saw Marillion twice on the MC tour, both times opening for Rush.

I got to see side 1 both times.
Too bad there wasnt enough time for the whole thing... but as an opening act their time was limited.


Better to see one side than nothing at all.
