Pagan's Mind
-
Saturday, January 29, 2005 4:59 PM
Hi guys, I strongly recommend that all DT & MP fans check out the new Pagan's Mind flashsite http://www.pagansmind.com. The Forum is up and running and the main site launch date is 8th February. Pagan's Mind from Norway have been highly influenced by DT and that is evident in their music. Check out 'Celestial Entrance'. I have been an obsessive DT fan for 14 years or so and Pagan's Mind are the first band to come along and press all the same buttons.

I have to confess I can't listen to Pagan's Mind. I've heard three songs and two of them had clear DT rip-offs . Osiris Eyes is still in my playlist though. They sound like a talented band and they have really good tight production but I really couldn't get past the 'references' I heard.

I agree metropolis2k, they are clearly talented but I don't think they bring anything "new" to the table.

This always makes me wonder, when people say that they can't get into a band because they're DT rip-offs (as I have heard with Dreamscape and Pagan's Mind). So what? You love DT, right? So, even if they are DT rip-offs, or have songs that sound very DT influenced, isn't that a good thing? They may not be bringing anything new to the table, but hey, I'm sure if DT made SFAM part 2 (an album that was on calibre with SFAM and was the same stylistically) then wouldn't you LOVE it? Hehe, just my thoughts, because I love Dreamscape, and I've heard people say they can't listen to 'em because they sound too much like DT. I've got two Pagan's Mind albums, and in the limited number of spins I've given them, I didn't really like it. I'm gonna listen to it some more hoping that it grows on me, or maybe I wasn't in the frame of mind when listening to it first time, but I'll see if I like it next time.

Well, to be fai I havent heard them enough. I do hate when people call DT, Rush rip offs. As you get to know DT you realize they are heavily influenced but they branch out and make their own style.

Well, what's funny is I actually like Dreamscape. They have the DT sound but also go in their own direction and don't have any direct riffs or lyrics the same. I must confess I haven't listened to the album I got for a while so maybe it was just an immediate thing. I wouldn't even say Pagan's Mind are that close stylistically to DT (especially not as close as Dreamscape). It was just the fact that with Pagan Mind there are lyrics and drum parts that are the same. I know it could be seen as a 'tribute' but I don't see it that way. And actually, even DT don't make the same album twice - and I think that is the main point. DT do something, then move on and try something different.

Pagan's Mind make no bones about the fact that they have been inspired by DT and they intentionally pay tribute to DT in the song 'The Prophecy of Pleiades'. I have followed DT from the beginning of time and know their songs intimately. Pagan's Mind have created their own unique style, quite unlike anything else and the only true similarities are that Pagan's Mind are exceptionally skilled and inspired musicians. Watch out for the new CD 'Enigmatic Calling' coming out in April

The "DT rip-off" is only done to pay tribute to Dream Theater, Pagan's Mind is an amazing band and they have their own sound and style, much different than DT. Its the same idea as what Dream Theater did in This Dying Soul with the metallica reference, its not the same but it sounds intentional enough to recognize easily. Cant wait to see the new site design, god damn i hope they have live video clips when its done!!

I must thank DrumR's big old bald head for both Dreamscape and Pagan's Mind, both of which do have their own identities despite the similarities to DT. "The End Of Light" is an epic that stands on its own, DT "cover" bands don't come up with 20+ minute air tight tracks on a whim. And I get a totally different feel from Pagan's than DT because the keys are more ambient (weird at times) and the vocals just convey totally different feel. I agree w/ Met2k that their production is tight...when the guitar screams in on "Osiris Eyes" am I just compelled to turn it as high as I can stand it. And that urge doesn't often come over me edit: because i am hooked on phonix

The production is in a league of its own as well. Stian prefers triggers, as where MP hates em. And the list goes on.

Well that's exactly how I got into Dream Theater many moons ago, just listening to Tommy Vance on the Friday Night Rock Show and POW I was hit by lightning. Thank you Tommy Vance.

I've got an mp3 on my hard-drive I downloaded off of The End about a year and a half ago, and it sounds EXACTLY like I&W-era DT. No ID3 tags on it, though, so to this day I still don't know what band it is. I wonder if it's this Dreamscape I'm hearing about.

ORIGINAL: metropolis2k Well, what's funny is I actually like Dreamscape. They have the DT sound but also go in their own direction and don't have any direct riffs or lyrics the same. Uh ... there's a REALLY blatant "reference" to ACOS in End of Light, the keyboard plays something very similar to the ACOS acoustic intro. I haven't listened to that CD for ages but I think it was somewhere shortly before the vocals came in.

You know the Pantera, and Metallica ones? Again I'll ask the same question Ive asked about a trillion times around DT fans. Why is it stupid when bands copy DT, but when DT copies bands its cool, an hommage, and so on. This logic is flat out RETARDED. Oh and lets not forget the TOOL rip offs in The Great Debate, and Home. Thats not a complaint on DT's music. Its a comparision to the moronic logic that runs rampant around here.

Apart from having a descending melody to it and you can't copyright them!

Yeah, I just realised it sounded like ACoS. But again, my opinion on this is that even if they DO sound like DT, why's that bad? You may not agree with the fact that they may be "copying" someone else, but if you love the band that they're "copying" why can you not love the band that is doing the "copying"? Is it just on principles that this band is "copying" another so I won't listen to them, even though I may like them? I'm never going to use the word "copying" again. I promise.

OHZ NOOOZZZZZZZ!!! Petrucci stole a 6 note riff from Bach's unreleased 1676 Concerto for six mandolins, four panflutes and a recorder in Erotomania!!! I'll never listen to JP again!!!! NOOO!OO!O!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess it all depends on how analytical you want to get. I cannot get "As I Am" = "Enter Sandman" out of my mind, or "This Dying Soul" = "Blackened", but it doesn't diminish my enjoyment of any of the four previously mentioned songs.

That's the thing, none of these are "blatant" to me. The opening riff kinda "feels" like the Sandman riff, but the comparison on this board here when ToT came out centered more around one James trying to "sound" like another James... When Vanilla Ice stole from David Bowie, now that was blatant

ORIGINAL: DrumRman What about all the blatant rip offs we've heard from DT? I didn't like those either, but how does that make other music more enjoyable? And DT have yet to release entire albums based on just one other band's style. The interesting bit about the DT "influenced sections" is how they put their own twist on it, adding odd time signatures, completely different parts around it or using significantly more adventurous song structures. So if one riff in Home sounds like the Tool riff from 46&2, there's still like ten minutes of music in that song that doesn't sound like Tool at all. Same with the Pantera influence on The Glass Prison - some of it sounds kinda like Pantera, but Pantera would never have written anything like that complete song. The copycat bands like Dreamscape and Pagan's Mind tend to sound pretty DT-ish throughout. Oh and lets not forget the TOOL rip offs in The Great Debate, and Home. Home is indeed somewhat embarrassing in that aspect. That is one case where I feel the "rip-off" claim is justified, especially since MP cites Aenima as one of his favorite albums and MUST have heard the similarity between the two bass lines. But I have yet to hear someone pinpoint a specific Tool song that they ripped off for TGD. It sounds Tool-ish, but I don't think it's more than that.

After listening to this band all day-- alot of licks here and there are very similar to DT licks. But the songs as a whole are orginial and its still good music. Lighten up guys.

I find Pagan's Mind to be more power/prog than pure prog. A cross between DT and Symphony X, with the singer sounding a lot like Geoff Tate. Pagan's Mind rock

I just watched the Osiris Eye video. Pretty good I must say! Just remember that DT are influences for other musicians now! Just like Yes or Rush were for DT... Part of music's natural evolution IMO!
