I am so ashamed, my own husband calling Guinness a "beer"! It's an ALE, it's STOUT, it is not "beer" And damn if I wasn't wishin' for one right now!

Speaking of Guiness... Does anyone here know how to make a 'black and tan'? (Thats what we call it around here) I know Guiness is normally used as one ingredient. For those who don't know, it when you pour two different types of beer into the same glass. When they separate, you get two different shades in your sleeve. It's great tasting and cool looking!

Here are some favorites: Rogue Shakespeare Stout (probably the best beer I have ever had) Rogue Dead Man Ale Sierra Nevada Pale Ale Smithwicks Smuttynose Shoals Pale Ale Watch City Tick-Tock Ale (micro-brew restaurant in Waltham, MA) Samuel Adams Chocolate Bock (this was absolutely fantastic) And then, there are the good old stand-bys: Grolsch Heineken Guinness My urine has more alcohol than Budweiser - and probably tastes better, too.

I love everything that the Stone brewing company makes. Arrogant Bastard, Ruination, Double Bastard, Stone IPA...mmm. Hard to find their beer outside of southern california, though. I just bought some of their Vertical Epic 04 Ale. Now I have to wait until 2012 to drink it so it can age in the bottle! (Shout out to Dmann for his great taste. Bear Republic rocks too--tried their Hop Rod Ale?) "Fizzy yellow beer is for wussies!"

Back at school it was Steel Reserve all the way. Had to switch to it after I couldn't handle Thunderbird anymore. If we're talking about drinking beer just to enjoy it and not to become numb to the world, Newcastle usually. There's no beer worth drinking out here, and when cases cost around $50, I either drink the cheapest stuff I can find or just get a double magnum of sake.

Stone Brewery rocks! I feel very lucky that I live so close to the brewery so I have access to all of their beers. Have you tried any of the vintages of the Old Guardian Barleywine? They will knock you on your ass for sure, as they are all about %10 abv and very tasty! Also, for SoCal beers try AleSmith Brewery. They make a fantastic IPA and everything else they make is excelent as well. If you have a Beverages&More in your area, they should stock it. I've seen it made with Guinness and Harp as well... The only catch with pouring one, is that the Guinness goes on *top* (generally poured in over the back of a spoon).

A black & tan is a mixture of a Lagar, preferably Bass or Harp, and a Stout, such as Guinness. You also need a tablespoon to do this correctly. Hold your glass at an angle and fill it halfway with your Lagar. Then put the spoon upside down over the center of the glass and pour the Guinness over the spoon. This keeps it from mixing and lets the Guinness rise to the top. Hope this helps! ORIGINAL: Erotified Speaking of Guiness... Does anyone here know how to make a 'black and tan'? The traditional black and tan is made with Bass and Guinness (at 48 degress temp). Bass in the glass first, then Guinness on the top. Works best if you kink the spoon handle to rest on the lip of the glass (which should be a pint glass), otherwise some of it will run down the handle and onto your hand . There's an Irish Pub in Minneapolis where they have kinked spoons all over the place for the bar staff because they make so many of them.

Anytime I go back to Gainesville and go to Market Street Pub with my buddies, there is an unwritten rule that we drink black and tans ONLY. Most of the time we follow that rule for going to Shamrocks or Durty Nellie's as well. Yummmm... black and tans...

I didn't start drinking beer until quite recently. But so far in my limited experience, I like Sam Adams and Killian's. Rolling Rock wasn't too bad, I guess (went down pretty easy, I can tell you that for sure), but I'll take a Killian's over that any day. I still have to really try Guiness sometime, though...

I still have to really try Guiness sometime, though... Based on your preferences, you might not like Guiness, but it's definitely worth trying. There are a multitude of beer styles, such as poter, stout, weiss, dunkel weiss, IPA, ESB, ale, lager etc... Not every type will appeal to every person. I'm not a fan of porters or stouts, and therefore I'm not a big fan of Guiness. It doesn't mean it's not a good beer though. My recommendation for all new beer drinkers is to try as many beer styles as you can. Then, zero in your favorite styles. Once you know what styles you like, you then have a whole world and 1000's of brews to enjoy !!!
