DID DT START OUT AS A COVER BAND?

Im starting up with this metal/rock band in Syracuse and was just wondering (since all we play so far is covers)if DT started out for their first couple of gigs just as a cover band. Its hard writting stuff man and just wanted some guidance and optimistic advice for this young band ive joined.
