Vocal Effect Programs

Umm, I have an awful singing voice. I can sing the right notes and the right pitch and errythang, but I don't sound good. I've written some songs and I can't imagine someone else singing the lyrics I wrote, which are incredibly personal. So, with that, are there any good programs that add enough vocal effects (not fucking AutoTune), that can change the sound of my voice, but not alter anything else? I don't know. Haha, i just need the help.

Without getting into too much detail, most recording programs have built-in plugins that can do a thousand things to your voice. From simply EQ'ing to distorting it, doubling it, modulating it, (all of the above and more) etc... But I'd say you should also give us a sample of your voice in case it's something you can fix by simply changing your technique and enhancing the part of your voice that sounds most pleasing. Or you can talk to a vocal coach about it as well. You'd be surprised how much you can improve your tone by changing the way you sing. You can also start to write more in the direction that suits your voice to begin with, even if you think you have a horrible singing voice. There are always styles that will suit your voice much better than others (and effects that will suit those styles, or the other way around). Singing in the right range also helps. Sometimes I sound like shit at higher registers and I'd be tempted to say I have a bad voice, but when I'm in the middle of the range I sound infinitely better (this goes hand in hand with the comment on technique mentioned above though). At the end of the day, you can do all these things, but your voice is your voice and it does have limitations. You either work through them, safely and patiently (which takes a lot of effort, but DON'T give up), or find someone else to sing the songs, if you can trust them with interpreting them the right way ;)

see, you have a good voice. Your tone is decent. But really, you just gotta sing more. You're already on your way. Whatever you do don't become impatient. Good voices don't happen overnight or even over months for some people. I'd say try to be in pitch even more. Right now you're about 85% there. Also, explore the tones your voice can make a little more by imitating singers with totally different approaches. From the nasal to the beefy, from the soft to the loud, from the monotonous to the emotionally dramatic. Also, your vocal tracks are completely dry and unaffected. It's kinda cool because it reveals the true nature of your voice, but you might want to try some slight compression, some delay/reverb (but by god don't make it super obvious), and some panning away from the center for backing tracks. Make sure the main vocal sounds like the main vocal, i.e. louder than the rest and in the center. Other than that, I stand by what I said before. Just sing more and with time you'll discover more things about your voice that you'll surprise yourself with. But always, do it safely and as relaxed as you can make it. Taking vocal lessons wouldn't hurt, and I definitely recommend it but again your voice isn't as bad as you think.

+1 to LakeofFire - I used to think I had a HORRIBLE singing voice (in fact, I was actually told that by my parents and bandmates), but i kept doing it because i liked to, and took a couple lessons. What I basically discovered was that even though I thought I was hitting all the right notes, I was sort of focusing on certain key notes in a tune and hitting those (uh, usually), but missing the in between stuff completely. basically I learned i wasn't as on-key as I thought i was, and that's what made me 'not have a good voice'. Even MP has said he can sing well but he has a lousy voice - but he's doing a lead on a Flying Colors song. There's a lot to be said for how you approach the song. Anyway, LakeofFire already said everything I was going to say, so just re-read his post :)
