Melodicrock.com has just tweeted that Sykes is out of the Portnoy/Sykes project..

When they say that Sykes is out of the project.... Surely that means that the project is not going ahead anymore?

That is really odd.... So Mike has to either find another guitarist with the surname Sykes, or change the name of the project! Probably easier to change the name ;)

Normally I would be skeptical too, but Andrew has a pretty good track record with insider info..

I'm thinking MP got tired of waiting around and this Portnoy, Sherinian, Sheehan and McAlpine project has grown legs. Just speculation...

It would seem that this would be the case as MP recently said "You want to make God laugh, tell him you're plans" and as Sykes hasn't been working much in recent times.

I guess the quote button is broken again, anyway I agree with GhostofCain. My first impression is that Mike's just tired of waiting and this McAlpine/Sheehan/Sherinian thing seems to be gaining momentum.

Roadie Normally I would be skeptical too, but Andrew has a pretty good track record with insider info. Yeah, he seems like a pretty reliable, honorable guy. Replacement guitarist, huh? I'm gonna go with Brian May.

I'd be very surprised if Guthrie and Mike collaborated. I just don't see Guthrie being a Portnoy fan + he's got Marco.

I wouldn't want someone like Guthrie... I'd rather John Sykes or a Richie Kotzen--killer guitarist with massive vocal chops and some commercial appeal. The instrumental, fusion shred thing is cool but I was hoping for someone more song oriented....like Blue Murder.

If I next hear that Sykes is going back to Thin Lizzy, I'm gonna go "screaming (Blue Murder)". Love Sykes to death, but he kind of reminds me of another favorite, Jake E. Lee. Both great guitarists, but in recent years haven't seem inclined to want to jump back into the game. Putting aside the Portnoy project, when's the last time John released a full album? Answer (I'm pretty sure)... a long, long time ago. Wish he'd talk to Joe Bonamassa about the value of cranking out great material.

So, if MP is going to form a new band with this well-known bassist and another guitarist, the person he worked with for 3 days a week ago must be the new guitarist?
