Meshuggah - Koloss Wednesday, January 18, 2012 12:04 AM (permalink)
Meshuggah have just started to release information regarding their next studio album. Surprised no has commented about this yet. And if there is already a thread for this, feel free to suave.

In any case, I already feel that this could be metal album of the year. Meshuggah have always known how to take it up another notch with their music since the beginning. And by the sound of it, it looks like they have pushed themselves even further.  What I'm really excited to hear is how they've stepped it up, considering there is nowa sub-genre of metal based on their sound at this point. I know their music is not everyones cup of tea, but I know that there are some fans here on this board. So what do you all think of this?

Album is due 3-27-2012 (ANOTHER MARCH RELEASE!!!)

    Track listing is as follows:
    01 – I Am Colossus
    02 – The Demon’s Name Is Surveillance
03 – Do Not Look Down
    04 – Behind The Sun
05 – The Hurt That Finds You First
    06 – Marrow
07 – Break Those Bones Whose Sinews Gave It Motion
    08 – Swarm
    09 – Demiurge
    10 – The Last Vigil

Definitely keen to hear it. I'll be seeing them in about 6 weeks for the Soundwave Festival (and headlining sideshow).
Wonder if they'll have released a preview track by then, something new to put into the setlist.

That's too awesome man! The last time they came to my area they had to cancel. That disappointment still hasnt lifted. One day though, one day I will see them!!

After seeing recently that Meshuggah and Gojira are releasing new albums, I decided to listen to a few older songs from each band last night. Don't think I'm going to be able to "get into" these bands, as the music is too loud and crushing, even for an old metalhead like myself. Over the years, I've gotten into bands like Death and Opeth, so it's not the genre. Maybe it's the mastering? I'll listen some more over the next few days to give each band a fair shake, but I was getting a headache after about 15 minutes last night. Geez......

Try listening to Catch 33, it's what made me love Meshuggah.
It's the least loud Meshuggah album.

Future Breed Machine and Bleed are the only two Meshuggah songs that really got me going... other than that, it's just not my thing. I'll probably listen through Koloss a few times to see if anything sticks.

If it was Meshuggah's 'Chaosphere' that you listened to, then that would explain the not so great sound, LOL! To 'get into' the band, I'd recommend listening to 'Destroy Erase Improve' & 'Nothing' - those are the bands two strongest (IMO) records. It does take a while to get into the habit of listening to Jens' harsh vocals though, I must admit.

Hell, to me it's all good. Easily one of my favorite bands.

Drummer Tomas Haake has issued the following warning:

“As always, we try to take our music in a slightly different direction with each album and with KOLOSS we feel that we really nailed what we were going for. Organic brutality, viscera and groove all crammed into a 54-minute metalicious treat, best avoided by the faint of heart!!”

I'm warming up to this genre a bit more than before but Meshuggah has less
transitions in their music than say...Tesseract where you'll have a very atmospheric
Floydian intro and than BAM, you're into these heavy polyrhythms.

This and Gojira are very high on my want list. It's just as well, seeing as I'm having a bit of a heavy session, as far as music goes.

Finally a new Meshuggah record that can kick the asses of all those new djent bands.

And that's a great cover. More than makes up for the hideous Obzen artwork.

I'll probably pick this up soon after it comes out, but their music grows on me rather slowly.  I've had obZen for almost a year and have yet to give it my undivided attention because I'm still in the process of digesting Destroy Erase Improve.  That being said, DEI is getting better and better and I'm confident I'll feel the same about obZen (and, to some extent, Koloss).

Once I got used to the heaviness (Meshuggah were my first extreme metal band after Opeth), all the Meshuggah albums actually grew very quickly on me, mostly because their riffs are quite catchy. Obzen though is probably their weakest album, Contradictions Collapse aside. Not that it's in any way bad. I's actually very good, but the thing is, up to that point every Meshuggah album was a clear progression whereas Obzen didn't bring anything new to the table. It's still great, but I prefer the others, and I think with Koloss there'll be yet another progession in sound.

When I discovered Meshuggah (with the release of Nothing) it was just the kind of metal I always wanted so from then on most metal just sucks cause it isnt as overwelming as Meshuggah.
And also: MeshuggAAAAAHHHH is our generations SLAYEERRRR. Now who would've thought a that any band could pull that off!?!?

I have no problem with the heaviness (hell, I listen to The Acacia Strain), I guess I just couldn't grasp the complexity..?  Perhaps.  Well, whatever the reason, I'll be giving this album a shot.

I hope it'll be another of Meshuggah's "hole-in-one" albums, PERFECT.

here some comments from a Listening party they held recently.

It actually had a really fresh feel to it.. I mean it's Meshuggah so the trademark element is there.. But it's moved forward. There's some real innovation. I just described it to someone as constant "face". What face means is when you have a huge frown and huge smile at the same time. It's like you win the lottery at the same time you're smelling the worst fart. That face is hardfucking core in key parts. There are times where we were all like "Oh my god that's the heaviest shit ever.." Like I was patting band dudes on the back for parts in a "ah you sly devil" way because sometimes that shit just makes you laugh in the "god this badass way". It's hard to describe music.. Especially Meshuggah, and when it's a memory of Meshuggah.. That you heard twice. I just distinctly remember a couple of riffs that are better than ANYTHING they've put out since the 90's. Like this whole style of music started to get stale and I think they felt that too and just took it to places it hasn't been. The good parts of the album are amazing. Also, it doesn't drag off into 9 minute land really.. It's pretty focused. There were some fast parts where people were saying "I honestly have no idea what's happening right now" but in a good way. There's a song that's straight forward crush. Like it's so just on and neck breaking. First song I've heard like that since Suffer in Truth. Straight forward, but obviously tuned to H. I think most people will agree with me when it comes out. I know everyone there did. In a real way, not in the industry we all have to act like it's good because the dudes that wrote it are gauging our reaction kind of way. There were maaaannny times I was looking among friends for a mutual "Fuck man are you hearing this?" head knod. I really wish another forum dude was there to back me up on this. I'm sure reviews from that party will start coming in. There was a pretty good press presence there as well as a lot of other band dudes at the event.

New shit sounds like what you'd hope for in a Meshuggah album but haven't heard since I. Unbelievably heavy and very catchy parts. More fast shit like bleed. Some parts are so bludgeoningly heavy it's kind of hard to really believe it. Very catchy. Easily the best since I. I think it's the best thing they've done in the 2000's. The cover art's also different than some of the stuff I've seen posted earlier here. But it's along those lines.

Thanks, that's pretty much telling me everything I want to hear!

I'm always interested in new music but Meshuggah is the only band that I have that "can't wait" feeling about anymore.  I keep waiting for that day when they put out an album that loses me, but they never do.

I appreciate it, and like it, but it's extremely rare I'll listen to an entire Meshuggah album from start to finish.
