Dobe the Drummer Holmes: Before the season, all the talk was that Sanchez was surrounded by weapons, and that retaining Holmes was an absolute must after the lockout (instead of locking down every passing attack in the league with the addition of Nnamdi). I never understood it, and now nobody else possibly can anymore. In case you weren't paying attention to what was going on a little south of where you are, Nnamdi sucks.

Not to change the subject...but it does still relate to week 17... But I was really impressed by Matt Flynn's performance in Green Bay. I know it was basically practice squads...but didn't someone say that he set a single game team record??? That's pretty impressive that he will be in the record books above both Farve and Rodgers!! The other interesting take on this...you obviously KEEP RODGERS....but do you keep Flynn as an understudy/eventual successor...or allow him to be scouted and traded? You could be sittin on a powder keg. (what the heck are they putting in the QB water cooler in Green Bay??? Can I have some???)

Yes, TD record for most TD´s in a game and most yardage in a game (I believe) for Matt Flynn. Amazing it is.

It seems odd to me that The Colts would fire the Polians before Caldwell. Bill should find work fairly easy as long as he doesn't include his son as part of the deal.

Im betting that it's a NFL record. EDIT Actually the record is set at 1000 PASS YARDS

1. Kevin Kolb threw 300+ yards in his first two starts for an injured McNabb. Look how that has turned out. So, I wouldn't just yet jump on the Flynn bandwagon. Remember Scott Mitchell? Matt Cassell (although I think the book is still out there)? Plenty of prolific backups fizzle as a starter. 2. Rodgers has - barring injury - lots of good years left. I think he's what, 28? You can't keep Flynn on the bench that long. Besides, Flynn is an unrestricted free agent this year. Expect he'll try and turn this into a spot at starting. And I doubt you'll franchise your backup QB. 3. What was the problem with Polian?

From where I'm sitting, it's about time the Polians go. Once, I was buying into the hype of them being great team-builders, able to unearth gems from anywhere, even if I also recognized the hand Peyton had in that. Over the last few years I started noticing the total waste they were making of their higher picks, and then this season the whole scam fell apart when they lost their only valuable asset.

"doesn't include his son as part of the deal. " That's how it went down. Irsay said can Chris, he said nope, so Irsay had to make the change. "3. What was the problem with Polian? " Polian is going to be historically one of the more memorable GM's and generally considered a "great". The problem is that (for me) he had many years of postseason disapointment. There was time to work on the never ending wheel of things that happen, but fundamentally the whole time he's been here the D has been Ok'ish to bad. I think the drafting in the last few years was a obvious indicator to casual fan's that BP wasn't doing as good of a job. Granted when you draft last, it's all hit or miss past the first pick, but he managed to get us Donald Brown and Jerry Hughes. Really the fundamental make up of the Bill Polian created Jim Irsay paid for Colts is a fragile one, and it doesn't have to be like that. Others just think he's an arrogant asshat who got exposed this season.

I never meant to imply that there was a QB controversy in Green Bay. And throwing up good numbers on a meaningless game is...meaningless. But the record setting numbers that Flynn put up is much more than just "a great game" IMHO. Many...MANY...backups could have been put in the same situation, and would not have put up *HALF* the numbers Flynn did. But I'm also not saying that he's another Favre/Rodgers.....YET. It's still too soon. But it has amazing potential. Again...what the heck are they feeding the QB's over there? Getting a hall of fame QB is rare, getting two in a row is even rarer (although the Niners did it with Montana and Young)...but *IF* Flynn were to be the real deal, that would be three in a row, and THAT would be unprecedented. But Spunky's got a good point....Rodgers is too young...and I was not aware that Flynn was an unrestricted free agent this year, so that's what ultimately throws my entire point out the window. I'm certain that Flynn will end up somewhere else next year. (Maybe that's who the Seahawks can go after instead of Luck???)

I think it's more a testament to a great offensive system and complete offensive team. Favre (when he was with Green Bay) and Rodgers are both great QBs, but there's a lot of talent on that team, too.

The thing is that game was NOT meaningless to Detroit. They would have much rather played the Giants or Cowboys than have to go to New Orleans where the Saints are just about unbeatable. And as far as I know it was just the Packers that had backups in, not the Lions.

Flynn may well be a superstar. But let's not get carried away with one or two games. Plenty of backups have come in, put up huge numbers, and done nothing as a starter. As a Browns guy, go look up Kelly Holcomb and the 2002 playoff game against the Stoolers where he subbed for an injured Tim Couch. What did he do as a full time starter? Zip.

I don't think anyone is getting carried away. I started it, and I'm only speculating. I never meant for anyone to take it more seriously than that. RE: Holcomb...I looked up his numbers. I never watched him *play*...but just from his Wiki article it doesn't look like he was given a heck of alot of opportunities. In a half season with the Bills he threw 10 TD's, 8 Int's and over 1500 yds passing. If you double those for a supposed full season, that's not half bad, and I've certainly seen lots of starters do worse. But as far as I can tell, he never even got to play a full season *anywhere*....that's a tough situation. But I'm a bit off topic. Again...throwing around "what ifs" is just fun sometimes, and it's always fun if you turn out to be right, and if you're not...well HEY...we're talking football and that *can't* be wrong!!

I think its safe to assume that even if if does go on to have a successful career, he will never have another game with numbers like he had yesterday. But if nothing else, yesterday's game probably gave him at least the opportunity to earn the starting job for some team next year.

I don't think anyone is getting carried away. I started it, and I'm only speculating. I never meant for anyone to take it more seriously than that. Fair enough. I've just seen a lot of Browns fans go nuts over this guy. Holcomb beat out Tim Couch for the starting job in 2003 but broke his leg midway through the season. Well, I say beat out but the truth is both QB's sucked in the preseason. Holcomb just less so. Actually, if memory serves, he played 1/2 a game against the 49ers I think on that broken leg. Tough guy. But, like most Browns QB's, he just couldn't get the team in the endzone. Flashes of promise that just fizzled away.
