PC Help

Alright, so, I've run into a problem I've never encountered before, and my best friend Google can't seem to find an answer for it either (and tech support is being as useless as ever). Now, I like to think I'm not dumb, but I'm certainly not the most in-depth guy when it comes to this kind of stuff, so bear with me and if possible, answer in layman's terms. Sorry about that. Anyway, the story and issue: *I am on Vista* I was checking those daily deals on Steam, when a Vista Antivirus program popped up telling me I had all of these problems. Being that I did not run this 'program' and had no knowledge of it, I closed out and ran my Avast! antivirus. It popped up again while I was scanning my computer, so I traced it to the executable and scanned that, but it said nothing was wrong with the .exe. It was in roaming and went by the name of (something like )jcl.exe, so I figured it couldn't harm the computer that much to delete it (oops). I did so, and finished the full scan. Avast! couldn't remove an infection in my rootkit, and recommended I did a boot scan (or whatever it's called when it scans my computer before booting up windows), which I did. But about 9% in, it detected an infection and requested me to take an action, but wouldn't respond to any action I took - it was frozen. So I waited, and nothing changed. So I manually shut off my computer and attempted to turn it back on, but while it attempted to do so the screen never actually turned on. I followed a tip on the internet saying to take out my battery and hold the power button for 60 seconds, after which the computer booted up again, although it couldn't find a fix for what happened. So I started it in safe mode afterwards, only to find that it can't run any executables whatsoever, nor can it detect my laptop's keyboard or touchpad/mouse. But it detects my portable keyboard and mouse. Weird. So I found a recommendation to run something called xp_exe_fix which enabled me to run executables, although my kb/mouse still wouldn't work. And yes, I understand that is for XP, not Vista. I couldn't find one for Vista at the time. So I immediately did a system restore, but it says that it was not successful. So I did more searching and finally found exefix_Vista, which I ran as well. It said it was successful, but I still could not use my kb/m. So I did another system restore, even further back. Same thing happened. So, for a quick recap on what I (know I) can't do: System Restore and use my internal keyboard and touchpad/mouse So now I come to you all in hopes that someone will know what the hell is wrong with my computer. If there is anything you suggest I do, even if it isn't directly related to fixing the System Restore or internal kb/m issues, go right ahead and share it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well, your first problem is still running Vista. I'd definitely invest in upgrading to 7. The issue you're having is you received a rogue antivirus program - a program that tricks you into thinking you have a virus when you really don't. The program continues to bug you about multiple virus warnings and urges you to purchase something to remove it right away. Hopefully you didn't go that far with the program, because you're buying nothing, just sending money to the scumbag. Most people get these rogue malware programs by browsing certain sites on the internet, or perhaps you have some security holes on your system not patched up like your firewall or torrent program. You can do a system restore - it's not the same as a complete wipe and reinstall of the OS. System restore will revert your system settings back to an earlier date, but not affect any of your personal files on the PC. System restore is the easiest and quickest way to resolve the problem as opposed to attempting to remove the rogue villain yourself manually. Click the start button and type "system restore" (without quotes) in the search bar, then click System Restore in the results list, it should be the first one. If the rogue keeps getting in the way, or won't let you open System Restore, then you'll have to boot up in safe mode (pressing the F8 key while booting up and choosing "Safe Mode" in the text menu). Then simply follow the steps to revert your computer settings back to a previous date. Depending on when you first noticed the rogue antivirus, I'd play it safe and choose a restore point at least a week before it happened. Once you confirm the settings and let it go, your computer will do some work and then restart. Once it's complete, you'll be returned to the normal desktop as if nothing ever happened. If, however, the rogue is still there, simply go back to system restore and choose an even earlier restore point. Avast is an OK antivirus, but I'd recommend Microsoft Security Essentials instead. Despite MS's poor attempts at earlier A/V's, MSE is actually pretty damn good and always has high ratings. And who better than Microsoft to use an A/V that's specifically designed for Windows? I hope this helps. If not, the next thing would be to take it to a professional and pay some money to have the rogue removed. The last step of course is a complete wipe and reinstall of your system. If you've reached this point of no return, make sure you've backed up all personal files and drivers before formatting the hard drive. Best of luck.

Well, your first problem is still running Vista.
in all seriousness...tst4eko has some good advice there and I concur.

I just fixed one of these rogue antivirus programs on my cousins laptop last night. In Win7 there's an option to boot straight into the system restore, rolled back a few days and fixed it right up. I don't know if you can boot directly into system restore in Vista, you may have to go into safe mode first.

regarding the keyboard and mouse, which appear to be your primary issue right now.... go into device manager, find the keyboard and mouse (probably under HID or Human Interface Device) and DELETE them both and then reboot. Windows should recognise each upon rebooting and install the drivers. if that dosent work there is a solution that is guaranteed to make it so you NEVER have an issue with that machine again. 1. find a tall building that has windows you can open 2. go up fairly high in said building 3. open a window 4. toss your laptop out the open window promise you'll NEVER have another problem with that machine :P

My netbook seems to be having trouble quoting, sorry about that. @Speeding Wheels: "go into device manager, find the keyboard and mouse (probably under HID or Human Interface Device) and DELETE them both and then reboot. Windows should recognise each upon rebooting and install the drivers." Good call on that one. Both now work! @tst4eko: "Hopefully you didn't go that far with the program, because you're buying nothing, just sending money to the scumbag." Nope. As soon as I saw it, I ran a scan on my computer and traced the program back to its exe and deleted that. "Click the start button and type "system restore" (without quotes) in the search bar, then click System Restore in the results list, it should be the first one. If the rogue keeps getting in the way, or won't let you open System Restore, then you'll have to boot up in safe mode (pressing the F8 key while booting up and choosing "Safe Mode" in the text menu). Then simply follow the steps to revert your computer settings back to a previous date." The issue I'm having is not so much that I can't run a System Restore, but rather that it fails to work. I have run one in both safe and normal modes, but to no avail. It'll do everything like it should, but when the computer boots back up and I log in, it says that it didn't successfully restore itself. "I hope this helps. If not, the next thing would be to take it to a professional and pay some money to have the rogue removed." My brother is pretty decent with computers and says that Malwarebyte is one of the best programs for removing infections, and according to that, Avast!, and a few others, the virus is no longer there. I just can't get my computer to go back to its earlier state.

your restore points were corrupted by the virus. it's not a HUGE deal just as long as Malwarebytes says you're clean. as a proactive measure google "RKILL" and "ComboFix" those are 2 tools that you may need at some point if the underlying effects of that fake malware crap is still looming somewhere undetected. also, DL and run CCleaner.. just let it flush out everything it suggests.
