A tough one since they have so many different periods. I began with In Absentia and Deadwing and was hooked, these days I love the whole discography.

In Absentia. Then go on in order from there, then jump back to the beginning. Put "On the Sunday of Life" in a dark, hidden corner where it can never ever be found. Too much?

ViolinTheater *snip* Damn... I missed the opportunity to do an epic suave. To answer the OP's question, I think Deadwing is a great one to start with.

Personally: Deadwing (where I started) or In Absentia is a toss up Fear of a Blank Planet The Incident Then work backwards through the pre-Gavin era stuff

I'd say In Absentia- It gives you some of their shorter song writing plus lots of there early psychedelic songs. Its a great time of transition for them. Then I'd say Deadwing, which gives a bit longer of songs (in general) and entering into their more current style. After that its a toss up. Continue forwards and listen to Fear of a Blank Planet and The Incident or work backwards. Lots of the older stuff has heavier electronic music involved too. It all really is what your more into. None of their stuff lets me down.

Either In Absentia or Stupid Dream. If you like the metal elements and like crazy drumming, In Absentia. If you like mellow spacey prog, Stupid Dream.

I started with Fear of a Blank Planet. I liked it. If I had to do it again I would start with In Absentia, and as someone mentioned go forward in time. (The Incident not necessary.)

He said he just gave him a check. I know people who have bought a lot of albums by one artist for a low price and then started listening to them. Regardless, who cares, let him enjoy the music. I could use this thread too because I have In Absentia and Deadwing but only ever really listened to IA. Lazarus on Deadwing is the only one I remember but I love it. I see Lightbulb Sun at the store all the time and I've hesitated buying it for years simply because I don't know if I'd like it! That and I always put off listening to Deadwing again.

Lightbulb is a solid album IMO. It doesn't have the same impact as IA or Deadwing but I do enjoy listening to it. There is something about Russia on Ice that keeps me coming back to it. H

First one I listened to was Fear of a Blank Planet, but PT didn't click with me until I tried In Absentia... which blew me away.

Goooo in this precise order: In Abenstia Fear of a Blank Planet Deadwing Lightbulb Sun Stupid Dream (I don't know any of their other albums so I can't comment, but that's the order I went on what I've heard so far and it worked wonders for me).

I think Fear of a Blank Planet is a great album, but it took me some listens before it clicked to the point where I was really enjoying it. However I was already a PT fan by the time it came out, so I'm not sure what it would be like to start with that one.

The best pre gavin stuff is summed up on Coma Divine.. that's probably the most underrated album in their catalog.

Stars Die is a great collection of their first 4 albums with some amazing rarities thrown in as bonuses (Rainy Taxi, Signify II, Fuse the Sky)

Definitely start with In Absentia and Deadwing. They are different but excellent in their own right. Lots of strong melodies on both albums. There's only 5 songs on Fear Of A Blank Planet, and IMO, 3 of them are average (for lack of a better term). The other two, the opening title track and the 17 minute epic "Anesthetize", are spectacular. You'll read polarizing opinions on The Incident, an album I have grown to love. You must listen to that one as a whole for the first time. As for the pre-Absentia stuff, I like Lightbulb Sun a lot more than Stupid Dream, which is pretty much a sterile pop album. I'm not very familiar with the stuff before that.

That's the beauty of music, for it was my first PT album I gave a listen to and loved it, and it is still my favourite.
The Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your kitchen? Yes. May I see it? ...No.

Peeps999 Play every album at the same time. I do look this idea as a Flaming Lips "Zaireeka" type thing, but I would join the others and say check out In Absentia. My first PT album and one of my first proggy in general albums. It's one of those albums you could listen to 40 times in a row and not get tired.

Peeps999 Play every album at the same time. That works. Then just mute out the ones that sound the least appealing. mbag11 I hope you got all those PT albums legally.... I bet Steven Wilson doesn't care about that so much, as long as he doesn't put PT songs with other artists' songs on shuffle through his iPod.
