The Playlist Project, Volume 3: Ultimate Christmas Saturday, November 26, 2011 11:22 PM (permalink)
Okay, boys and girls.  It's the most wonderful time of the year, and therefore time to create the Ultimate Christmas Music Playlist.  I'm a HUGE fan of Christmas music, and begin playing it on Black Friday (unlike the retailers, I don't believe that the Christmas season starts before Halloween.   One holiday at a time for me, thank you very much. ) and usually by the time New Year's Day arrives, I'm sick of it!  But, until then, I'm spinning the holiday hits almost 24/7.

I have a ton of this stuff, but I'm always open to suggestions.  There's a lot out there, and not all of it is good, unfortunately.  I have more than a few albums that only have a song or two that are listenable, but that's why I make a playlist!

So, the assignment is simple, my little elves:  Give me a list of ten or so of your yuletide favorites.  Again, not looking for whole albums here, just the best songs.  I don't care about the artist or genre - this time of year I'm listening to everything from Bing Crosby to Mariah Carey to Straight No Chaser to Bruce Springsteen to Jon Anderson to Josh Groban to Garth Brooks.

For those wondering why this is "Volume 3," check out the previous two playlists and feel free to add your suggestions to those lists as well:

The Playlist Project, Volume 1: Acoustic Rock
The Playlist Project, Volume 2: Essential Jazz

Make me a list, and I'll check it twice.  I don't care if the songs are naughty or nice.  Bails just wants your best holiday sounds.
It is during our darkest moments that we must focus to see the light.

      Bails,
I highly recommend the Jethro Tull Christmas album. Bought it several years ago and every year I enjoy it more. It's got a Celtic sound to it. Of course the signature flute and a lot of acoustic guitar as well as bells, mandolin, accordion, etc.

Many of the songs are instrumental, including a jazzy version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, and Holly Herald.

My family Christmas mix includes everything from Jimmy Buffett to Emerson, Lake and Palmer, to Garth Brooks and Greensleeves.

I am waiting to receive my Neal Morse Proggy Christmas.

The compilation "A Very Christmas 3" is amazing, if you ask me!
I recommend the following christmas songs:

          - Sting: "I Saw Three Ships"
          - Smashing Pumpkins: "Christmas Time"
          - Chris Cornell & Eleven: "Ave Marie" (Gives me the chills everytime - just amazing track)
          - Hottie & The Blowfish: "The Christmas Song"
          4 - 8 - 15 - 16 - 23 - 42 - Are you lost??

I actually have my own Christmas playlist on my iPod, so I feel your excitement.  Aside from the massive amount of TSO that dominates that playlist, here are some of my other favorites:

            - Peter, Paul & Mary's live version of "A'Soalin'" from their In Concert set.
            - "The Peace Carol" by John Denver and the Muppets
            - "The Final Word" by Michael Card, which may or may not be considered a Christmas song depending on your feelings on the matter
            -  "O Holy Night," "Peace, Peace / Silent Night" and "A Journey Toward Bethlehem" from Michael Crawford's Christmas album
            - "Little Child" and "Winter Wonderland" by Don McLean
            - Neil Diamond's version of "Sleigh Ride"
            - George Strait's version of "Away in a Manger" is pretty straightforward, but really good in that simplicity.  "There's a New Kid in Town" if you're looking for less traditional work.
            - Jewel's version of "Hark! the Herald Angel's Sing" which she sang on the TSO Christmas special always makes my playlist... love that third verse.
            - Uhm... "Christmas at Ground Zero" and "The Night Santa Went Crazy" by Weird Al.  Not kidding.  Always put these on my Christmas playlist.

Greg Lake - I Believe in Father Christmas MUST be in that kind of a playlist.
Wonderful! Time for a celebration... Cheese for everyone! Wait, scratch that. Cheese for no one. That can be just as much of a celebration, if you don't like cheese, true? You've run a maze like a good little rat. But no cheese for you yet. Well, maybe a little.

The Reign of Kindo - Breathe Again is ABOUT Christmas, not totally jolly, the lyrics are uh...I'll let people see for themselves. But it's a nice kind of lounge/prog/relaxing pop piece that fits the winter mood.
                    I was saying boo-urns.

No, seriously, gotta add Vince Guaraldi Trio's A Charlie Brown Christmas.

An absolute classic.  That's the only Christmas album I need.

The compilation "A Very Christmas 3" is amazing, if you ask me!
I recommend the following christmas songs:

                        - Smashing Pumpkins: "Christmas Time"

                        - Hottie & The Blowfish: "The Christmas Song"

Funny you mention this one.  I LOVE the first two, and despise the third one.  I can't stand Billy Corgan, and while I really like Cornell, his song sounds like a funeral dirge to me.

I have listened to the song a couple of times, and I really love it! I have ordered the album with the "Breathe Again" on, just because of that!

If you don't like Wham, you can also try Cascada's version of the same song, Eurodance style. At least she's a LOT more interesting than George Michael, if you know what I mean...

Yeah, now that you mention it, Jimmy Eat World did a pretty good cover of that song, too.

There's also Spiraling's version of "Do You Hear What I Hear?," where they mash-up the Christmas song with The Who's "Baba O'Riley."  Pretty clever, really.

I can't find an MP.com-forum-safe link, and I don't know if they still sell the single on their website.  It's out there, if you look hard enough.

Spiraling, for those who aren't familiar, is an indie-pop band led by Tom Brislin, who played keyboards for Yes on their Symphonic tour.  Awesome keyboard player who should have gotten the gig as a permanent member, IMO.

I have a confession to make: my all-time favorite Christmas album is Andy William's Christmas album. I have been listening to that since I was a kid. To me, it is Christmas!

Love Chrismas Music. I had a smooth jazz-new age phase in the 90s and have a lot of Chrismas stuff in those styles, but it actually works for Chrismas music. So there will be a lot of that in my list.
                                            My faves:

Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas
Billy Squier - Christmas Is The Time
Bob Rivers - I Am Santa Claus
David Benoit - Linus & Lucy (his version of The Charlie Brown piano theme, from GRP Christmas vol 1)
Gary Burton - O Tannenbaum (jazz, from GRP Christmas vol 1)
                                            The Kinks - Father Christmas
                                            Mannheim Steamroller - Jingle Bells
Oystein Sevag - Crystal Palace (from a new age collection called A Winter's Solstice, vol. 4)
Thurl Ravenscroft - Your A Mean One, Mr. Grinch
Spyro Gyra - I'll Be Home For Christmas (GRP Christmas, Vol 2)
                                            Sting - Gabriel's Message
Tom Petty - Christmas All Over Again
TSO - Mad Russian's Christmas, and of course Christmas Eve (Sarejevo 12/24)
U2 - Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)
                                            The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping
Windham Hill Artists - Carol Of The Bells (from the A Winter Solstice, vol 4 disc)
Yutaka - This Christmas (GRP, vol 1)

Left out a lot of the standards; Elvis, Frank, Nat, etc.

While this is not Christmas Music per se, most of Bach's music was commissioned by The Church. The Canadian Brass certainly captures the majesty of the season.
