Saw the first episode and really dug it. Watching the 2nd one now, discussing early American heavy bands. Anyone else checking this out?

I have it on my DVR. I still need to watch it along with the Pearl Jam documentary, Black Country Communion, the U2 Sky Moves Down documentary, and the last 3 episodes of Fringe which are hanging out on my DVR. Man, I'm far behind!

This has been a good year for Rock Docs, no doubt. George Harrison: Living In The Material World definitely sits atop that list.

Yeah, Living in the material world was amazing.
There's a doc by BBC called the "seven ages of rock". that's pretty awesome too, but it can get draggy. the first episode of that series is definitely one of my favs

MP said he has done some filming for this, but more interestingly so has Bill Bruford. My hope is that the argument is made that King Crimson's Red could possibly be the first progressive metal album, or something of that nature.

I've really enjoyed the first two episodes that get into the pre-rock/metal and the very beginnings of American metal. The thing about me is I'm a young metal fan, I'm 22, and I know of these bands but have never thought they made a huge impact. Someone like Blue Cheer for example, I've always known of their heavy version of Summertime Blues but never knew that they had made such a huge impression on people growing up in that era. So now I'm gonna go pick up an album by them.

There is A LOT of important information that's been omitted thus far, which calls into question-at least for me- the ' research' that went into this.

No mention of the distortion\fuzz box ( invented in the early 60's) in episode 1 which birthed the sound of metal. Odd to see mentions of the Stooges or the MC5, and no mention of the device that made it all happen.

Or how about no mention of Motorhead in the NWOBHM episode? The most glaring fuck up I've ever seen.

There are MANY other importantcies that have been overlooked (oh yeah, how could Mountain not get a nod?), so Metal Evolution, for me, is a great idea, which lost a lot in it's execution.
For all the youngens watching M.E.: take it from a geezer who was there for a lot of this. There's alot of partial and missing information from this show; be wary of what you you're watching.

I'd have to agree that there are some things missing... i suppose Mountain not getting some lip service is a problem... but I actually feel like Sam is interviewing FAR more people than those that have appeared in the past.  Dick Dale?? I about spit out my drink when I saw him up there.  Major props for that.

Trash, upon seeing Dick Dale's view (which did come early on), my impression was these producers did their homework and my expectations were raised and hopeful.

However that episode's dwelling on The Kinks ' You really got me' and the neglect to mention the Count Five's ' Psychotic Reaction' (the first ever thrash song?) started a continual downward spiral of my view on this show.

Does anyone remember if Dunn mentioned Grand Funk Railroad in the American 70's segment? They only were just the second or third band to sell out Shay Stadium.

Enjoying it so far.  I have little interest in the glam stuff so I probably won't rewatch that one, but I have watched the others when I catch them in reruns.

These sorts of things generally omit stuff, which sucks, but that's generally the case when you're trying to produce something that flows at a pace that will keep people of al tastes interested.  But... I like how he's showing that there isn't a linear progression at all stages of development of the genre, and there was a lot of cross-influences especially at the beginning.  Great interviews too.  My guess is that he'll come back to some bands and milestones that he missed along the way.

Ummm....I might be crazy but I swear they mentioned the fuzz box and distortion pedals in one of the first two episodes. Tom Morello says something about them if I recall. They also mention the band Mountain I believe. Not sure what you are watching, or maybe I'm the crazy one, but those two things I swear got talked about.

Yeah, the effect boxes and pedals were mentioned in the first episode, maybe not as prominently as they could have been, though. I'm enjoying ME so far although it's obviously very superficial and contains hardly any new information for those of us who grew up with metal. But some aspects are also really new to me. I actually wanted to skip the Glam Metal episode but ended up watching and enjoying it. I never cared for bands like Ratt and Poison and seeing the clips of their old videos almost triggered my gag reflex a little bit but it was really cool watching the guys being upfront and honest about what they were (and some of them still are) doing and why.

I wonder how much time they are going to spend on some of the Extreme Metal bands that came up in the 80s and 90s.

I'm really enjoying this.  I missed the first two episodes, so I'll have to find them somewhere.  It's well researched, and I don't have an issue with things that are omitted (there's only so much that can be covered in a 1 hour episode).  I even liked the glam metal episode -- not so much for the music but because I "came of age" in the suburbs of Los Angeles in the 1980s, so I saw all that stuff develop.  The prog metal episode is scheduled to air on February 4, 2012 (too bad it couldn't have been Feburary 1 -- 2/1/12).  Can't wait!  This is something I would buy on DVD.

Man, I really loved the 80's and glam metal.  It was such 'fun' music and culture.  Now everything is so serious and melancholy.  RIP
