I commend Metallica's exploratory inclinations. I deride the product of this specific adventure. I tried so hard. I forced myself through the whole thing. Only a few times did I feel any positive emotions. I'm gonna write this one off as a misguided attempt to be Lou Reed's backing band, and await the next actual Metallica album.

I threw up in my ears when I heard this album. Good to know that a truly bad album can come along and make you appreciate the rest of your library that much more.

I saw it at Wal-Mart when I was picking up Megadeth's Th1rt3en, but I passed over it having not enjoyed it when I listened to the stream.

No way. I will not waste my hard earned $$$ on this garbage that makes St Anger sound like a masterpiece. Anyway, why is the quote function so hit-or-miss (mostly miss) with this board?

Quick review from the Washington Post, [link=http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/music-review-lulu-by-lou-reed-and-metallica/2011/10/28/gIQAJhHHaM_story.html]http://www.washingtonpost.../gIQAJhHHaM_story.html[/link]l It’s already been called the worst album of all time, this unholy union of Lou Reed and Metallica, the multi-headed hydra of unpleasantness known colloquially, though not fondly, as Loutallica. They’ve united to present an 85-minute misery delivery system called “Lulu,” loosely based on a series of German expressionist plays that chronicled the adventures of a prostitute-turned-slave murdered by Jack the Ripper. It may not be rock history’s worst album, but it’s almost certainly the most ridiculous; a somber, self-satisfied, misogynistic mess that is the aural equivalent of having a rock dropped on your head, an experience that might actually be preferable. “Lulu” brings out the worst in everybody involved. Reed, once the unruffleable king of downtown, huffs and rants his way through these mostly spoken-word tracks like an old man telling those darn kids to get off his lawn. Metallica are as uncharacteristically subdued as Reed is animated, noodling their way through a series of tracks that flirt with metal, country and even blues but all somehow sound the same. “Lulu” is an exercise in degradation. It’s degrading for Reed, whose riffs on bodily fluids, Kotex jukeboxes and eating waste are as self-serious as they are awful. It’s degrading for Metallica, who sound reduced somehow, like a Metallica cover band playing the lounge at an airport Marriott. It’s degrading for poor Lulu, who peers mournfully out from the album’s cover with both of her arms hacked off, looking as if she wishes she was missing her ears instead. You’ll know just how she feels.

I might warm up to this. Having 'Junior Dad' playing in the background while I do the internet is kinda nice actually. But to have lines like the infamous "I AM THE TABLE" getting sung repeatedly and after having seen the grandpa Simpson clip it's just hard to take it seriously in some places.

After my initial reaction, i took some time away from the music (maybe i had to be in the right mood to appreciate it?). I went back and listened to some other tracks last night and once again was chuckling to myself at how awful this is. That has never happened to me before. This is just a terrible idea and the general consensus seems to be that it's one of the worst albums ever made. At this point, i'd have to agree.

I actually REALLY WANT the collector's edition of this. It seems such a shame that there are people out there who have the money to pick this up, but won't....and then there are those of us who desperately want to support it but can't. Hey, if anyone out there actually bought it and decided they don't want it anymore, let me know.

The "Pumping Blood" that Lou Reed repeats is stil my favorite It would have been cheesy, hilarious, and sad even if it was Hetfield or Anselmo singing that part, let alone how Lou Reed repeats it.

Hwangman This is just a terrible idea I'm not so sure that the idea itself was terrible. I can imagine that they wanted to do something avant garde and this seemed like a great thing to do. The final product, though, is absolutely horrible. I'd rather listen to some of my dad's music that I can't stand (old-time southern nasal singers) than Lulu. This is one of the worst albums I have ever heard in my life.

The View is still the only thing off this album I've heard, and I find it absolutely nauseating. Is the rest of the album pretty much in the same vein? P.s. TAY-BULLL-AHHH

I'd say the music gets more interesting in many places, but it's mostly as repetitive as The View, and Lou Reed's spoken vocal thing is monotonous all the way through. Maybe the lyrics are amazing, but I haven't been in the mood to check. I think it's worth giving it the one listen, but I found no reason to go beyond that. There's so much music to listen to or to discover that listening to this multiple times just to see if it grows on you, or if it clicks or whatever, feels like a waste of time.

Dobe the Drummer I tried so hard. I forced myself through the whole thing. Only a few times did I feel any positive emotions. Not picking on you at all, but your comment triggered the thought: who says they intended you to have "positive emotions"? I can't speak for any of the five creators of this, and I am no Lou Reed fan (though I like the Velvet Underground), but I'd love to be able to ask Lars or James about this (assuming they'd give a candid answer). I can't help thinking - and totally cop to this possibly being wishful thinking - that this is the best example of my constant harping that "good" and "bad" can only be ascertained by the artist, and all we as listeners can do is say "we like it" or "we don't like it". Even if EVERYONE says "I don't like it".
It might just be more of Les's weirdo weedy jam band bullshit...

B-Mouth is reporting that only 13,000 copies of this sold first week. Frankly...this shocks me. I mean I knew that the majority of fans didn't like this but with the Metallica name alone you figure at least 100K. I know the guys in the band say they are happy with this album and glad they did it but from a business standpoint I bet the label is devistated.

Yup. Megadeth's Th1rt3en out sold this... Charted at #11 while Lulu charted at #36. That's a first a Megadeth release selling more than something with the Metallica name on it. I thought for sure with just the name "Metallica" alone on Lulu would've shot it up to number 1 on the Billboard 200.

I didn't pick up Lulu because I'm not a Lou Reed guy. Kudos to Metallica for making an album with a hero of theirs, but this was never going to sell. For one, most Metallica fans either do not know who LR is, or aren't into that style of music. Plus, between the terrible economy and internet piracy, Lulu never had a chance. Perhaps this album would've went over better with the fans if it wasn't pimped so much, and the special edition(s) didn't exist. Maybe they should've played it cool and just released the thing with little fanfare.

I think it was imperative that Metallica be honest about what this was up front or else they would have had 500K fans buying an album they thought was a Metallica album and being really pissed thay they spent the $$. Better to have sold few units and been honest up front.

I wasn't implying that they shouldn't be honest, it's just that there was so much hype/press for this album (mainly due to internet), and people usually revolt against things that are promised and not delivered.

I say if you're gonna go that route just give it a negative (as in -10) rating already...go big or go home! Nah...honestly...now that some time has passed and I have a little perspective I can honestly say that I'm cool with it...not my cup of tea but it wasn't meant to be...it was a side-project where metallica could spread their wings a bit and they did give us an EP shortly after so I have no complaints.

I still am surprised that they would be able to put out anything that is even less listenable than St. Anger, but they sure enough managed with LuLu and followed it up with an EP that arrangement-wise is a complete and utter mess. I don't hope for anything worthwhile from that camp now.
