This was my 7th time seeing DT and the show was freakin' amazing to say the least. I couldn't help but watch Mangini like a hawk the entire gig... There were a few little niggles that were fixed within a second here and there, but I can't really tell if it was the Genie's fault any way. He is sooooooo different to Portnoy and definitely brings a different feel/groove to the band (well to my ears, of course) he hits HARD and stays closer to the recorded song tempos for the entire track. He really is insane, those one handed rolls he does while keeping time on the cymbals is great to watch and hear. His DRUM SOLO was pretty damn incredible I was yelling expletives in disbelief and amazement, the polyrhythms and the final speed fury... Bellisimo! The band was really welcoming and supportive to MM, at any given time either JR, JM or JP were right over at the kit looking at him, nodding cues etc. There were also a lot of moments where the band were all really tightly standing around the kit together as they played, it was nice.*

Other than that it was Dream Theater. Though... Labrie... The man was fucking incredible. The only way I can describe his voice is like... It's like it's higher, sitting at a higher register and less... I guess masculine? In a good way. And it was rich, rounded and really full bodied. I'm sorry if that sounds like a contradiction. But I got the F# to prove it.

I could rag on about the gig for ever... But seeing it's 1:50 and I gotta be up in 4 hours...*

yeah, the buildup was cringeworthy and the F# itself wasnt what I was hoping for. but then again it was the first gig of the tour. give him time to warm up, eh?

Yeah the F# and buildup wasn't fantastic, but let's see how he warms up to it as the tour goes on.

I often read that, but I don't agree : A singer (or a guitarist, or whatever musician) should warm up at home *before* the tour, not during the first gigs... It's not an excuse IMO.

I'm really looking forward to seeing them live on the North American leg, which it's supposed to begin in September. Hopefully I could make that happen.

HOLY CRAP, that looks killer! What a show that would be. Under a glass moon was not what I was expecting for an opener. Can't wait to see em if they come to western Canada again :)

If there are spare tickets AND I'm not busy, then I'll go see them next Tuesday...!!

We all knew this day would come, but it suddenly hit me how strange it is that DT is performing live without MP. Still, time marches on. I have little doubt that I will go see them, if they come to town on this tour.
