SANCTIONED : DT World Tour 2011 / 2012 Discussion Thread

I'm not sure if the energy was less or more without MP but it was certainly different. Perhaps it felt different because I was spending too much time wondering if it was... or maybe it was actually different! Who knows, I wasn't there.

ok.. those crossovers at the end of MM's solo were sick. 
 
 

I just watched the Mangini solo (only a bit.. not a drum solo guy), and Ytse Jam... VERY good job by all. I am so amped to have DT back on the road again! Mangini looked right at home and sounded perfect behind the kit (from what I could hear with camera audio). I loved the setlist, and am really looking forward to seeing this stuff live soon enough!

It's somewhat difficult watching the You Tube links. And, I say that with all due respect for Mr. Manginin, of whom I've been a fan of for years. But, seeing a DT "classic" like Learning To Live, w/o MP behind the kit, is just still so...odd to me. I would equate it to going to a Rush show, hearing the cymbal intro to YYZ, cue the stage lights, and, say Gavin Harrison is on stage, filling in for a recently departed Neil Peart. Gavin is a total badass, but....C'mon...That's Neil's gig behind the kit. Just like, DT playing Learning To Live is Mike's gig behind the kit. I really am not intending to beat this already decaying horse into the ground any further, and understand why all parties involved did what they did (well, sort of). I don't know. I'm happy to see everyone moving on, and being successful, but the 20+ year long fanboy in me is still lamenting seeing something like this for the 1st time, w/o Mike playing the onstage ring leader of the DT circus.

Well the same could be said about Jordan playing those songs but I guess with time we'll get more used it him.
 
I freaking love the solo and I'm usually not a big fan of drum solos. He seems to play the songs pretty close to the book which isn't a bad thing. I guess with time he will add a bit more of his flavor. Yste Jam has probably the most hyping intro in DT catalog. Every time I hear that intro I think 'hell yeah!!!' lol

On the other hand, I just watched Mangini's solo. Holy freakers.. What a beast he is!!

Dream Theater has been in my life for 20 years, sometimes during important events. When Mike announced he was leaving I felt almost like somebody dear to me has died. It took time to get used to it, but once I saw the LTL clip it started all over again. I was overwhelmed by emotions and cried a little. I mean I love MM as well, been a fan for years, but still...just does not feel right...

The band sounds amazing. Mangini is a MACHIIIIIINEEEEE!!! It's a great time to be a DT fan and a music fan. With 4 Portnoy albums this year, and now the DT album/tour, this is just amazing.

I honestly thought he looked like that last tour too... either way I love to see Myung coming alive!

If you watch DT's last show with MP (its from Japan or something) you'll see that JMX was moving a lot more than usually. I guess throughout the years hes become much more animated, while still maintaining that awesome stone faced demeanor that makes him so badass.

Anyone else notice how MP has a particular visual thing with his sticks when he drums that's really distinctive? I notice it live and I notice it in videos.
It must be the angle at which he holds them, because when they're flying through the air about to be smashed against a drum they look somehow different to anybody elses. Sort of longer.

Anyway, I miss it.

I can see them avoiding songs of personal nature to MP (see bold above). But the rest will probably be played eventually.
 
I just hope it's no legal/royalties issue they're facing here though.

watching the videos i was just grinning from ear to ear. Things felt right and like home but different at the same time. kind of like there was a fire in the kitchen and the kitchen had to be remodeled. it's not the old kitchen but its still kinda the same. the walls and the structure fell right but there are new appliances and new cabinets and the dishes are in different places. I am so looking forward to seeing DT live. I have been a huge Mangini fan for a long time. What a great time to be a DT fan! Plus MP is releasing albums left and right. So far what a great summer!

I absolutely approve of MM, what a guy! And I'm sure MP was asked if this thread is okay to have, so he's obviously a stand-up dude himself! Drummers are cool man.

I don't know, guys, I think LaBrie really has to step up his game.  I know he's a bit older now, but that's no excuse. Overall, it doesn't seem like he really pays attention to his tone or intonation/pitch.  So many songs where he used to change the color of his voice to match the song (from soft and sweet to rough to operatic), now he just sings it all with the same kind of voice.  That coupled with the fact that it's all out of tune doesn't do it for me.
 
I know he still has a hell of a voice. I just want him to use the full range of color and control that we all know he still possesses.

The issue here, it's not the fact that now it's Mangini, and yesterday it was Portnoy. The real issue was the show that Mike gave, this is a guy that not only is a great drummer, but a great frontman, much greater than J.Labrie. Ask yourself a question, when a DT show it's over, who sticks in your mind always!!!
Mangini is a good drummer, but for me, Portnoy will always be DT drummer no matter what!

I've always defended Labrie's voice: illness, tired muscles at the end of the show, voice range going down... But for the 1st show, middle of the concert, and yet out of tune... I really don't know how to save him !

eeeh.....oohh, yeah, vocals seem a bit rough on some of those videos.  I guess it could be the relatively low quality of the recordings, but....I don't know, at this stage, screw the F#, just gotta achieve better pitch control than that.

Let me say first that I love Mike Mangini and I think he was the right man for the job.
 
I haven't been able to watch any of these videos. Just seeing the pics made me sick to my stomach. This is all just ... wrong. MP is supposed to be the drummer for DT. Waaaaah, I'm gonna cry about it. Just saying, it made me realize that I'm still very sad about the whole thing. DT is (was) a big part of my life. Just bummed, that's all. Right now I can't watch the videos. Not sure I'll ever be able to get use to the idea of a DT without MP. 

I totally agree about MP being the "man" and it's always going to be his gig. I think MM is gonna need some time to be the showmen that MP is while playing freaking DT music!

On the new song, I'll say that it didn't really interest me. I listened to it a couple times so far, not had that "urge" to put it on like I've had before.
 
But I'm watching the live clip of it just now and it's really cool live, even if JLB is a bit rough. Maybe the mix on the single release is just boring me or something. I do feel the drums were too quiet. But obviously that isn't the case in this awesome live vid!

Great stuff, but I agree, James doesn't sound good, specially in the higher parts. I really don't understand how there are people saying he sang amazing and such. Too bad cause he sounds great on record.
