SANCTIONED : DT - ADTOE Discussion
Sunday, May 01, 2011 11:39 AM
( permalink)
Is there a "sanctioned" thread for pre-release news discussion about the new album? If so, please point me to it. I saw this on DT Forums - http://www.dreamtheaterfo...53.msg867186#msg867186 - this morning and thought it was exciting. Mebert78 Lastly, I asked him if he could give me any details on the new album, songtitles, anything. He said one thing he could tell me is that Myung wrote lyrics for songs (I believe he said songs, plural -- as in multiple songs). Of course, we already figured this would happen. He said next he is recording his keyboard parts. I asked him if drums are done. He said yes and they are killer. He said Mangini would play some parts with one hand and he's never seen anything like it. I asked if Mangini wrote the music together with the band, like Portnoy used to do. He said no. Jordan, John and John did the writing without Mangini. I think that's pretty much it. I kept it short, because I didn't want to hog his time. But it was great to meet him. Such a nice guy. Cool show. Definitely worth the car ride!

Makes sense that JM would start writing again. Coupled with what he said in the third episode about jamming with JP again, seems like he's getting a lot more involved again, which is great.

JMX lyrics owwwwyeeeeah
Wonderful! Time for a celebration... Cheese for everyone! Wait, scratch that. Cheese for no one. That can be just as much of a celebration, if you don't like cheese, true? You've run a maze like a good little rat. But no cheese for you yet. Well, maybe a little. ~ Sheogorath, Daedric Prince of Madness

fucking quote feature isn't working again I direct this at Dobe the Drummer I don't see why this is a big deal. It's his first album with DT and maybe he didn't feel comfortable writing or they didn't feel comfortable letting him write. Or maybe even most of the music had been written prior to his joining. I'm sure the next album be he'll get to be even more involved.

No offense but, are we going to start a "Whining About the New DT Album" thread?

THIS is exactly why I wasn't devastated as some people at MP's life changing news....sure i was upset and it changed everything for DT...but i agree with MP's statement of wanting to take a 5 year haitus, DT was sounding too generic their last few albums....hopefully with more JMX lyrical songs it'll go back to something like the olden golden years.... (THIS IS NOT A TROLL AGAINST MP, if anything i nod my head to him, because i agreed 100% with his opinion on why he left)

Progmetalman I don't see why this is a big deal. It's his first album with DT and maybe he didn't feel comfortable writing or they didn't feel comfortable letting him write. Or maybe even most of the music had been written prior to his joining. I'm sure the next album be he'll get to be even more involved. It might be that the band want to explore the new dynamic between themselves (with JM and probably JL contributing more than recently) before adding yet another element to it all. Or It might have been MM's own idea in the first place. Either way, if it means that they created the new material less by jamming it out and more by actually writing and arranging stuff, I'd actually welcome that development very much.

This is a good point. But during the auditions, they specifically tested the drummers' ability to partake in that jamming, so I don't know that they're going to deviate from it all that much.

True, but that wouldn't factor into this album if most to all of the music had been written before Mangini was brought in, which appears to be the case.

TheNurse Maybe they don't want to share royalties with the new guy just yet This was my first guess. Also remember that writing in the past was generated from ideas that all four members brought to the table. If, like someone hinted, most of the ideas were already on the table, then MM would only have to take care of his parts. MP did far more than that. He didn't *just* write his drum parts, he changed the direction of where any given song was going. He would give others direction. (when I do this, you do that) Someone (I think Scotty) pointed out to me that MM has never been a "composer"...but that not necessarily a bad thing. He will write his drum parts and the musical ideas will come from the three J's. (with maybe, the occasional composition from JLB...he's not incapable.)

Dobe the Drummer OUmd I asked if Mangini wrote the music together with the band, like Portnoy used to do. He said no. My biggest concerns continue to be realized. I wouldn't read too much into that. Neil Peart never got "writing" credits on the music, but you can't deny he had a very heavy hand in his own dum parts. Ged & Alex didn't make him the most influential drummer of a generation, right? No worries - Jthe three J's know whats what.
I can't think of anyting funny right now.

I think that the change in the writing/recording process/dynamic necessitated by MP's departure will be the biggest benefit of this whole situation for DT. Sometimes a change in the process or dynamic can be a huge charge to the overall creativity level. Should be interesting. I am very hopeful and optimistic that we will see something fresh from DT this time.
I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. socool111 but i agree with MP's statement of wanting to take a 5 year haitus, DT was sounding too generic their last few albums.... that's NOT why he wanted a break; he thought the personal relationships had gone stale. read the classic rock mag interview. he was proud of everything they did musically. he wanted a break from the members of the band.

It kind of makes sense that he didn't participate in the writing. I mean, he was still teaching at Berklee, and the guys in DT were working (non-stop, I'm sure) on writing the new album. Maybe he'll be there more for the next record and maybe not. Who knows. We will see how it turns out with JP, JM and JR doing all the music. Great to see JM back writing lyrics. I know it's been stated that MP needed a break from the other guys in the band, maybe the other guys in the band needed a break from MP and how he works in DT? (Judging by the way things went down, it seems totally possible...)

Frank Solomon I think. Their manager. Oh yeah, this is excellent news on how the new album is going and that JM contributed some lyrics! It's totally understandable that there will be some changes in the process and I'm totally cool with that.
