Soundchaser I listen to music entirely objectively. My enjoyment of a song/album has nothing at all to do with what time period it was done in, who's in the band, what their previous albums sound like or how much hype they are given by any group of people (including the forum ) I intend to do the same with the new DT album. What exactly is the "confession" here? or you just wanted to make yourself look cool. ah, ok.

NickG 2. I can't stand Opeth / PT / PoS. A large part of this has to do with the way they are unabashedly pimped on this forum, but having given each of those bands multiple chances, I can say that I can't stand them. Standing head-and-shoulders above the "I can't stand them" crowd is Spock's Beard. Sorry, folks, I just don't get it. whaaat????? 3 of my top 5 bands! lol * I HATE TOOL Aviv Geffen (Blackfield) confession: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdms7NptQ5k Minute 7.15 :p

I love Gourdy Lee's avatar picture. Like, LOVE Gourdy Lee's avatar picture! - IMO, Opeth's Ghost Reveries trumps Blackwater Park in every possible way. I just can't comprehend HOW people think otherwise. - After listening to Rush for over 5 years, I still only kinda get them. AND I HAVE EVERY ALBUM! - I really hate punk rock. Like REALLY hate it! - VH's "Jump" has one of the coolest keyboard leads ever! - Genesis are the most incredible band EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -b) Second's Out version of "The Cinema Show" is better than the album version. Still can't decide on which Supper's Ready version is better. - Nick d'Virgillio >>>>>>>>> Neal Morse as a vocalist. - Elton John is awesome. - Beardfish deserve more attention. - Come on Eileen!
This is my new signature. Enjoy.

Sergio Mendes - Never Gonna Let You Go A good song is a good song. Awesome vocals. Worth checking out on on the ewe toob for cheesy Solid Gold tv show lip syncing, with Sergio Mendes jamming in the middle of this duet, it is pretty surreal.

I appreciate the rude sarcasm though.
Bolus - I play keyboards, in a band, we make music, it's good when you hear it, ya. Time And Tension - more delicious prog! yum!

I have some problems listening to Fates Warning . All their stuff sounds the same ! (except for the first 3 albums , which were Maiden-esque and APSOG , which I think is very original ) They all start with a slow beginning , piano and acoustic-like , and then at 4 minutes it kicks in , but still very slow . At around 5-6 minutes there FINALLY something going on and .... at 8 minutes the song is over . If you consider all their 8-10 minutes song are mostly like that , it makes me cringe !
PEW-PEW-PEW! Bing-badang! Slabadapatow-sling-bing!

I know where you're coming from Soundchaser. The "music was better in the past!" and "everyone else loves this band so why don't I?!" comments usually go right over my head. Though I think a lot of times if there's a band most people love on the forum for example, and someone does NOT like that band, they feel like they might be missing something that causes such love for the band and legitimately want to know what it is. But sometimes when things don't click, they just don't click. I love the musical diversity on this forum, let me just say. The fact that for someone like me who isn't a huge fan of progressive metal to be able to have so many discussions about so many different genres and bands is amazing, there's no where else quite like it, with so many opened minded individuals. I think this confessions thread does demonstrate that in a way.

My second round of confessions: - Words cannot convey how much I hate Rick Rubin's production style.
- I don't think that artist should mix or master their own tracks. (Perfect example being Mike Orlando's mix of AMob EP.) A fresh look for the post-recording process is one of the crucial requirements in my opinion.
- I do not like Billy Sheehan's tone no matter how great of a bass player he is. That being said I have really been hooked on Dave LaRue's bass playing lately, the guy kicks major ass and he is one of the most underrated players of all time.

-I don't like 90% of the music discussed on this forum but I keep coming back for reasons unknown. -I can't listen to DT anymore. (I killed their good albums with too much love back in the day and their bad albums (modern) are cringe inducing to me) -I can't stand 99% of metal. (specifically modern metal) -I don't think prog metal has gone anywhere since SX-V. -I don't get this lady gaga fetish. -I'm sick of technical music with nothing under the hood. -I wretch as more and more 'prog' musicians unashamedly call themselves 'virtuosos'. -I think 'prog' is one of the least progressive genres. -When Jordan Rudess started trying to be hip a few years back by acting metuul and swearing it felt like a friend was stabbing me in the back. ha -I think that if Kevin Gilbert were alive today so would 'prog'. -I secretly can't wait for DT to get old enough to be forced into thinking purely musically when their chops begin to fail. -Radiohead are the only consistent band with a decent lifespan that I can think of. -I saw this Portnoy-DT situation happening years ago and got chastised on here every time I made my theories known. I left for a couple of years out of frustration and would have loved a 'told you so' moment upon my return but I probably would have been banned + nobody would have remembered me anyway. ha

Diana Krall's music puts me instantly in the mood. I've never seen her perform live, but I am attracted to her on numerous levels. As I get older, I prefer jazz over just about any genre of music. If I could play guitar like anyone, I'd like to play guitar like Bruce Cockburn does. While I appreciate the talent of Bruce Springsteen, I'd prefer to hear other artists cover his music. I am a closet Mamas and Papas fan. I love singing harmony. Artists who strain to hit notes and/or screech instead of sing annoy me to no end. I think we all know who they are. I love musicals. Chess and Jesus Christ Superstar are the musicals I listen to the most often. But lately, I have a new appreciation for Les Miserables. However, my favorite lyricist in this genre is Stephen Sondheim, so go figure. I am generally not a big fan of country music, but I've been known to cross over from time to time: Neil Young, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, Kathleen Edwards, Lyle Lovett, etc. I find most rap to be annoyingly inane and repetitive.

i hope this doesnt get me in trouble, so i am saying this as respectfully as possible to all parties involved... i confess...i think the MP/DT split was the best thing that could have happened to Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy respectively. i think both are in better places now, and making better music (for the most part) than they were before.
Chaos...Panic...Disorder...My work here is done.

I like late Phil Collins Genesis more than any other era of the band. Although I like almost every song with Phil, and most with Peter and Ray, I think Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance are both masterpieces. They're the right mix of catchy and powerful pop/rock/prog songs. The instrumental sections of Fading Lights and Living Forever are as fantastic as anything in the DT catalog; the mood and intensity of Tonight Tonight Tonight, Domino, and No Son of Mine brings chills up my spine; and Invisible Touch, I Can't Dance, and Jesus He Knows Me are just too damn catchy! Throw in some great slow love/love-loss songs and you got yourself the two best Genesis albums (IMO!)

snapple Cascada is one of my favorite artists. Plus she is GORGEOUS!@ As the years progress, I dislike metal more and more. ^Except for Iron Maiden. They're just too good to not like. I still listen to Dream Theater a lot, despite needing new material, desperately. Porcupine Tree is good, I love them. But I RARELY listen to them. Hiphop is one of my favorite kinds of music. It heavily influences the way I write lyrics and how they flow. (thanks JayZ and Run DMC) I think Kid Cudi is the best MC of my generation. Most metal music BLOWS nowadays. Opeth is meh to me now. From Still Life on they've kinda fallen into the same pattern to me. Did I say Cascada was fucking hot? this guy got it

Round two for me: - When people start saying "I'd like this more if it weren't for the prodcution/mixing/mastering" I immediately tune out. Some of the most loved, iconic music in the world was poorly produced (if even produced at all) and vice versa. Pretentious nonsense, for the most part. - "Genres" matter less and less to me as I get older. I am seeing less and less difference between Lady Gaga and King Crimson, for example, as I learn more about what makes each entity tick and learn why they make the music they do. - I wish music was more "fun". I know I sound like my grandfather, but Kiss back in the day was just... FUN. Nowadays, everyone is all worried about "artistic integrity" and "open-mindedness" and blah blah blah. Just enjoy the music and shut the f--- up. :)
It might just be more of Les's weirdo weedy jam band bullshit...

I saw Howard Jones perform Human's Lib & Dream Into Action in their entirety back in November. I would like it even more if Thomas Dolby did a similar tour and played all of The Golden Age of Wireless & The Flat Earth.
