        WTF?  when did this happen?

I saw him on Dr. Drew's Rehab House or whatever that show is called... everybody on there was a train wreck, but Starr seemed like he kinda wanted to change.  Of course he also acted like a spoiled little kid a lot of the time.  you could kinda tell that he wasn't the guy running the band.  Sorry to hear he passed away though, wow.  Just couldn't keep up with the program, i guess.

Damn. I actually watched that sober hose with him where they jammed at the end. He looked like he was gonna beat it. Steven Adler is heading that way again too I think.  These guys should go to real rehab centres not this bullshit TV show joke things (yes thats what they are, good intentions or not) 2 weeks with cameras in your face and they probably got paid for being there. Ironic cause the money they got probably went straight to buying drugs. RIP nevertheless .

Would was the song that got me in to AIC  and it just speaks to me.

Also, i never saw that TV show, but after hearing the news i find the media's speculation on such difficult personal problems very sad and wicked.

In the almost 20 years that Mike has been out of AIC one would have hoped all the countless deaths would have had a sobering effect...but sadly, this was not to be...RIP Mike.

                              RIP.

Hate to read that people will never learn. Make me mad as hell that others posted that. Being an addict myself I know his fight. It is a very hard one. I'm very lucky that I have friends that understand and will always be there for me in this fight. I started using coke when I was 11 years old and still fighting this disease today.
I look at the world and see no understanding...

Sorry, Akasha. Let me clarify that my statement was more about people who BEGIN to indulge, not those who already battle.

HOWEVER.....anyone who starts using drugs after seeing the devastation they've done to their loved ones and/or heroes gets no sympathy from me (I had a 24 year old cousin OD and die in 1987). This is where LEARNING comes into play. I learned.

But that's another topic for another thread. This one is for Mike Starr. Thanks for those early AIC albums, they were great.

                                  So sad.
I never submitted the whole system of my opinions to the creed of any party of men whatever in religion, in philosophy, in politics, or in anything else where I was capable of thinking for myself. Such an addiction is the last degradation of a free and moral agent.

RIP.. certainly a loss. i remember when Layne died.. it crushed me, although he really gave up the will to live. huge AIC fan, gota respect Mike for his early contribution. At least the other AIC guys seem to have it together.

RIP to a great and raw bassist. There was a time when I would just listen to Alice in Chains on end. His contributions to the band have been amazing.

Is it sad? Yes. Burt i dont have much sympathy for those who die of deaths that die from stuff like this weather its lung cancer or emphyzema from smoking, Bad liver from Drinkin Or just OD from drug use. People know the dangers of all these when they start to indulge, so it cant be a surprise when the grim Reaper comes knockin. I have much addiction in my family including losing my father to it. My mother is seriously Ill from smoking and prescription drug use, my brother is a huge addict as well.  So its not like im some unknowing fool either. I have also done stuff in my early years, but whater happens to me or anyone as a result of this stuff there should be no real surprise as we know the risks going in.

Wouldn't it be great if someone would learn from this, that people don't catch this disease by accident like the flu... He didn't talk badly about the guy, only that he's death wasn't a suprpise. Your attitude really remind me of the South Park episode "Bloody Mary" where Randy gets to know that alcoholism is classified as a disease.

Can we just mourn the loss of a human life instead of dredging up the same old arguments about addiction?  Not that I knew the guy personally, but I appreciate what he brought to a band whose work I enjoy.  RIP.

The gist of what I said I stand behind though even if it sounds a bit insensitve, as the subject matter hits home to me.

It is part of life. That's why it's a discussion thread, and not just some locked post with news.

Addiction debate aside, the real sad thing is that drug use is still glorified and treated as a joke in pop culture. Why the hell is all of America watching Charlie Sheen fall to pieces yet again and so many laughing like it's just some sort of light hearted joke?

Mike clearly did NOT want to change on that show. He wanted to be free of the downfalls of addiction, but he did not want to take advice, or learn from anyone. That doesn't mean he's stupid... it means that stuff grabs hold of you and makes think like you'd never think in your right mind. It ruins lives and Mike's Mom can't hope her son will get better anymore. Now she and Layne's mother have to live with the fact that their children felt responsible for each other's addictions, and would their deaths, and yet continued anyway because they had no control. I don't think those two ladies give a crap about who feels sorry for the fool who starts taking drugs... all they know is that their children are gone before they are, and that's just wrong. The families don't deserve all this and it's just sad.

That being said... families know their suffering. They know their opinions about the drugs, and those opinions are valid, and really just completely true. But, they don't know the other suffering that the addict went through. Bad choices yes... but most people are a bad choice or two away from death several times in their lives. Life can be a tightrope. Whether they made stupid choices or not, I hate that they had to suffer through that struggle of needing and wanting something that tears them apart and makes them hate themselves.

Also, as a non smoker... I'd bet that at least as many lung cancer and emphasema deaths are air pollution related in bigger cities as are smoking related. There are parts of cities and certain rural areas in the world that have more toxins than any cigarette does. It may be stupid to start smoking, but a little perspective never hurt anyone.

RIP Mike.... I hope you're not suffering anymore.
