Just realized I'll be seeing MP twice in one months time with two different bands. Once with DT opening for Iron Maiden, then once with Avenged Sevenfold on the Uproar festival. 

This, + Transatlantic, and sitting on the balcony above me at the NYC Opeth show

Wonderful! a new aspect of drumming for DT!!!!

I know there are some people that might say that you're distracting yourself from DT, but really it gives you a fresh perspective on your music to play with others! Plus mom always says to play nice with others... I think i'm getting off topic.

We've had 2 super heavy super metal albums in a row from DT, (with a few songs that are less so), and it's a great direction for you guys, as well as having a balance, I look forward to the next album with a lil' of the Rev's drumming rubbing off on you, as you seem to have done so much for him.

Be as amazing as ever Mike, and much respect to A7X for continuing through this.

Darn, no Pittsburgh, PA date!

at least you get a show in your state.  texas hasn't gotten any love from DT proper since august 07.  thats two tours i had to miss :-(.  yay for getting to see them this summer with maiden, and now getting to see mike with A7X in september.

question: like three people mentioned a new JP solo album.  i know the JLB solo album was confirmed, but isn't the JP solo still speculation?  id LOVE to hear a new solo album from him (and another feeding the wheel/rhythm of time-esque record from JR), but if its still speculation don't get other people's hopes up yet.  :-)

i'm hoping this will get us some more dream theater fans.  look at the list of big-name hard rock and metal acts he'll be playing with.  stone sour, disturbed, korn, lamb of god, atreyu, shadows fall, ROB ZOMBIE!  this is a great opportunity for mike and the band (a phrase you'll never hear for any other group thats been around for over 20 years).

funny how many of us who weren't necessarily A7X fans before will be going to see them just for mike.  i like some of their stuff but i probably wouldn't go see them unless some friends asked me to go.  i'm reminded of what all the DT fans thought when they were signed to roadrunner a few years ago.  everyone was afraid all the space would be taken up by the "dumb slipknot and nickelback fans".  i wonder if the A7X fans are saying that all the space at their shows will be taken up by the "dumb mike portnoy fans".

This is such a wonderful good news story. Really, it is.  I can't begin to imagine how emotional this all be behind the scenes for all involved.

This is freaking awesome. As other as mentioned, I'll be able to see MP more than once this year (within a 3 month period). This will be really interesting to see. I wonder what kind of kit he'll be using. As silly as it is, that's what I'm most excited to see.

1) An unbelievable amount of material to digest and master in the span of a year. 4 different bands and tons of songs, and MP didn't even become
familiar with A7X long ago. I have no clue how you find time to prepare with his schedule.
 
2) It will be so cool to see MP in this setting, behind a kit for a major metal band that's not DT and therefore the weight of the whole DT thing
will be off his shoulders. I'm sure there's a fine line between too much showmanship and not enough in a situation like this but Mike will know
what's fitting and what is not.
 
3) Also cool of the Portnoy family to back MP on this given the lack of time they get to spend together in 2010...strangely, a year prognosticated to be
relatively inactive. My how things can change.

If you come to Europe, any place i'll go! germany, france, UK. i think, with the low cost flights, there would be lots of people travelling just to see MP+A7X once in a lifetime, cause it will be just this tour, and then new drummer. I'm really jelouse of the US people now. =)

I'm the only one (other than the man himself) who appears to be somewhat bittersweet about this.

I think Mike is beyond gracious and giving to the band, and is truly a role model for anyone.

On the other side,

It would really suck to be away from family that long. I'd HATE to be in the position of a professional musician, which is why I am choosing to do solo projects, so its on my time and my chances of succeeding are infinitely more remote.

Was told today by a trusted music industry source that the new "as yet untitled" A7X album will be released on July 27th 2010.  Can't wait to hear what they recorded with MP!

 Looking forward to info when the Toronto Molson Amphitheater tickets go on sale.

MIKE PORTNOY TO TOUR WITH AVENGED SEVENFOLD THROUGHOUT 2010

After having had such an amazing experience recording my drum tracks for the new Avenged Sevenfold album, we all knew it would be awesome if I'd be able to do some touring with the band after its release...

I am happy to say that the timing worked out perfectly that my touring cycle with Dream Theater (and Transatlantic) was coming to an end just as A7X's was scheduled begin!
(well, perfect for everyone except my poor family!)  : )

Although I wish I could stay on board with A7X in a more permanent capacity, the reality is that I am commited to Dream Theater as my main priority (that is my baby afterall!), and I will need to resume work with DT to start a new album at some point in 2011....

However, I will be able to join my brothers in Avenged Sevenfold for at least the duration of their touring throughout 2010...and hopefully this will give them the time to continue to heal and get comfortable back on the road....

You can look at me like the band's "rebound drummer" to buy them some time until they are comfortable and ready to make a commitment to somebody new for full-time relationship in their future!

In the meantime, I am real excited to hit the road with the boys...to bring my drumming from their new album to life on stage and to honor The Rev with all of their older material....

(Hey, do I get to have a cool, bad-ass stage name now???)  : )

Good luck singing the Rev's vocal parts, Mike! :P But really...his range is quite a bit higher than yours. But you guys will figure it out. Gonna try my hardest to hit the Charlotte date...I never got the chance to see A7X before (despite being a fan for a few years), but the fact that you'll be playing drums is kind of an added bonus :)
