I really wouldn't have thought MP does such a huge amount of shows with A7X.

Have fun there and this act of friendship and the token gesture behind it are really awesome!

I hope the A7X fans appreciate the stuff you're doing for "their band" and recognize you don't want to snatch some attention or so by doing this...

Ya I thought about that, but I bet he could do it for a handful of shows.  I just think it would be special in several ways:
 1.)  It would bring two very passionate fan bases together where MP = greatest common denominator.
 2.)  Seeing a special musical talent perform both shows would be something of legends
 3.)  Even though DT and a7x are very different, they still, in my mind, still both progressive rock bands and therefore share some similarities.  There is an interview out there where M. Shadows states the bands influences and Dream Theater is one of those that he mentions.  I truely think both fan bases would gain an overwhelming appreciation for each bands musical talent.
 
...in regards to the 30 second clip of "Nightmare" and MP's drumming, I have a question for you drummers out there.  MP stated that he would stay true to the Rev's drum tracks as he wrote them.  But every musician has a distint style.  Is it possible to play the drums exactely like someone else or is a playing style like a fingerprint...that no matter how close you try and immulate someone else, your signature is going to seep through?

Could anyone explain how MP is gonna play in London, UK at the High Voltage festival with Transatlantic on the 24th of July, then get to Montreal to perform at the Heavy MTL festival the next day, and not be completely and utterly exhausted?

So MP, are your bassdrum heads for the A7X tour going to be the Majesty symbol with the batwings attached to them? That would be killer!!!

I doubt that MP would want to call attention to himself during this tour out of respect.

Just saw the vid  MP linked on his Twitter showing him briefly in studio recording Nightmare.

Very cool. I'm really excited to see him on this tour where the energy levels will probably be
uber high.

A local radio station organizes these concerts called 'Pointfest' here in St. Louis, I think they are twice a year. Anyway, they are advertising the next on set for August 14th and Avenged Sevenfold is mentioned as a band that will be playing.
  The master list here has A7X beginning the tour on August 17th, I guess they have added this date. Is that a solid confirmation Wey or is the local station smokin' some funny stuff?

Well the Point has been advertising it non-stop and STL today online has an article where A7X is mentioned as well.....so it appears to be so. I will attend also just for them as the other bands playin grealy don't do it for me.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Like you, I only know what I have heard about their past endevors and it does make someone who is not in the know worry a bit.
  I am sure MP knows what he is doing but to have that temptation there is going to be something he is un-accustomed to being that DT doesn't really party hard. I'm sure some of thier support acts did/do but still, I am just praying that MP remains strong and influences those guys in a way that they never thought possible.

Well my sister is an A7X fan, and I guess I sorta am (I like some songs, but not huge on them), so I will be taking her to the show. She got row K seats in one of the front 3 sections at PNC in New Jersey... so Row 11 I suppose? I've never gotten that close for a show at a place that big. At least it gives me an excuse to see MP live for the 15th time LOL.

For Darien Lake/Buffalo I'll be scoping out Ticketmaster at the last minute for a decent ticket, or doing the lawn.  No more general admission for me.  After Worcester, I have a nice bruised rib.    Too old to be in the pit with a bunch of kids jacked up on energy drinks.

Coming from a die hard A7X fan (and DT/MP fan of course) I think that all of A7X's fans will see what a class act MP is for doing what he did, I know I wont be able to ever thank him enough for helping them get this album and tour out there for everyone and i hope other fans feel the same way, because without MP, A7X wouldnt be a band anymore. And I agree that people will be in awe, when they see MP playing live.
I was spellbound once again, when I saw him with Transatlantic in May.
It's not that I hold MP sacred or something. That's not the way I function.
But the skills he has combined with how he expresses and shows that he's got fun playing live are simply awesome.

I saw a pic and some vids on blabbermouth and looks like he uses the small acrylic kit he also used on some ging during the Chaos In Motion tour. Gave it a quick look and looks like the identical kit used on the songs Panic attack and Take The Time (and other on the DVD). On the pic it seems he's using 4 octobans, instead of the 2 he used on that "smaller" kit

I may check out the DarienLake/BUF show next month.  I have lost interest in GA shows, esp. after bruising my rib in Worcester, resulting in some unexpected respiratory issues.  A man must know his limits.  For my favorite bands/artists, if I can't check out a show from a close distance, its not really worth it.  I'll check out a DVD of the tour perhaps.

Last night (as I'm  sure they do every night), they unveiled a huge banner of The Rev (really nice image, btw) and Shadows said some stuff about him and then said something like, 'This guy has been helping us out, Mike Portnoy!  He was Rev's favorite drummer, so we're honored to welcome him to the family!'  Or something like that.  Not overblown, no DT plug, but pretty cool.

Speaking of which, man, I totally get the whole A7X thing now.  Last night in Chicago, they DESTROYED the place - I mean seriously.  I felt REALLY bad for Disturbed having to follow that, but 1) Disturbed's show is pretty cool visually, and B) who knew there were that many Disturbed fans out there?  Still, I felt that A7X owned the show.  Plus, it was a great father/son moment for me - my son thinks the sun rises and sets on A7X, and I got to see one of my heroes playing with them.   Win!

Last night at Bristow, VA, Portnoy was first introduced to the crowd at the beginning of "Welcome to the Family." From where I was sitting, he got a good reception.
 
Other observations from last night:
If I didn't know any of the history of MP's involvement, I would never have known he was not a permanent member of the band. Portnoy's presence was seemless and he was playing like he has been with the band for years and years and years. That right there is a reflection of the professionalism that Portnoy brings to the table. It was a treat to see him doing something a little different from his usual stuff.
 
Using the number of shirts being worn as a barometer, it was clearly an A7X crowd last night. Overall, they probably had the best set, followed by Halestorm, Disturbed and Stone Sour. All bands rocked though, so coming in last is not nearly as bad as it sounds in this list.
 
Surprisingly, I did not see a single DT t-shirt when I was walking around before the show started and between sets (I had on my Transatlantic Whirld Tour t- on).
 
Definitely worth the $20 I spent on the ticket.
