Therion: How would you classify it?

It's weird....these guys seem to be great musicians, but I can't get into them, for some reason. They've changed their sound countless times, and now I get the really over the top power metal fantasy metal kind of feel from them. And some of their stuff is really good. Like REALLY good. They're just too weird for me. Anyone here like/get this band?

I love them and was able to see them in 2004 in their Lemuria/Sirius B tour, great show!! I don't like the first albums at all but since Theli they became one of my favorite bands...

I've only heard their Theli album, but I enjoy it quite a bit. Metal Archives defines them as: Death Metal (early), Symphonic/Operatic Metal (later) That seems entirely plausible to me. Here's the description from Brian Russ: Therion may not have been the first band to fuse operatic singing in metal, but Christofer Johnsson's crew is generally regarded as the standard bearer in the field, ever since he first toyed with the idea on Lepaca Kliffoth in 1995. Gradually the opera singing became less of a background novelty, to the point that Johnsson himself stopped singing altogether and now employs various guest singers, both from the opera and metal worlds. Since that time Therion has remarkably maintained a high standard of quality, with ambitious releases such as the twin album collection of Lemuria/Sirius B and the new double-CD effort Gothic Kaballah.
Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun.

for first Therion was more like "melodic" THRASH METAL 2 or 3 albums later, SYMPHONIC THRASH METAL since "Vovin", i would say SYMPHONIC GOTHIC METAL and not THRASH anymore Therion's Myspace official page says DEATH, PROGRESSIVE and GOTHIC METAL But for me the band is SYMPHONIC, GOTHIC, PROGRESSIVE and has some grunts.... well, i love Therion anyway

Therion rule, they have an almost pagan feel to their later stuff. Hell, even the ABBA cover is good! But i agree with the above, at first, melodic death metal, then operatic goth-type stuff. Weird, yes, but very, very good!

Symphonic Metal, plain and simple. There is nothing 'gothic' about Therion's music or image.

Symphonic Metal, yeah. I like their early death metal sound and their vocal harmonies since Theli. Several years ago I was a huge fan of them, nowadays... well, not anymore. But I still adore their "Secret of the Runes" album - it's a masterpiece.
Wonderful! Time for a celebration... Cheese for everyone! Wait, scratch that. Cheese for no one. That can be just as much of a celebration, if you don't like cheese, true? You've run a maze like a good little rat. But no cheese for you yet. Well, maybe a little. ~ Sheogorath, Daedric Prince of Madness

One of my favourite bands and hard to classify, their CDs are always on auto buy, can't wait to hear what Christofer Johnsson does next with a new album in the works.
