Hey forum! Let's cover Metropolis. Who's in???
-
Sunday, March 07, 2010 3:40 AM
if this happens, it would be a cover of Metropolis Pt. 1 (BCSL Tour Version with extended middle solo section) (see download festival performance if you DONT know what i mean) at this point in time, all those who would participate please post your instrument, from a choice of BASS, DRUMS, GUITAR, KEYS, VOCALS (people who play other instruments like violin, i know you're out there, YOU CAN POST TOO and have a solo in the solo section, but the sections of the original would be kept intact as per the cd) basically we would split the original (Images & Words CD version) into segments (the unisons might be split bar by bar, while a verse might be left to be played by one person; and some of the chunkier riffs could be multitracked), and then people can choose a section to play their instrument for (bassists and drummers would probably end up with more parts than guitarists due to numbers). then we would slot in the middle solo section, which would involve everyone, with a long rotation of guitar, bass, drum, keyboard, vocal, kazoo, breakdance, anything solos. (Taffer, you can do a striptease ). note: the instrumental playing should be competent people, as most of you are; but for vocals, anyone can take a vocal line and scream it (so in the final product we could have, for example) 10 people taking turns at each line of the first verse, no matter how terribly they sing/yell it) we would need someone good with DAW/Movie making software, to put together a nice multi split screen youtube video; and to sew all the audio together. each member would need a webcam or better quality camera, and decent audio recording facility. if none/some of this made sense ask questions etc etc etc etc WHO's IN?!

I'd volunteer to sing it, but James's range is definitely beyond my reach.

I can play guitar, bass, drums and I love to sing a bit as well. But, unfortunately no recording software or camera. Oh, well back to the basement to practice by myself again.....

I can do the bass... although I never did learn the final unison. It would give me a reason to though, and I could give it a mix too. Portfolio on my website :)

Natt, female vocals would be awesome! Johnny.Swift, if youre up for it, youve got the job!!! what im thinking is people would record (for the non-solosection parts) their parts along with the cd version, so you can put the CD version in your DAW, then sync everything up, remove the original, and mix things in and out. the hard part will getting the video together... well have to keep this very tidy and label all the files well!! im sure anyone who wants to will be on this, so long as you can record yourself doing something. people who arent confident playing the original parts can have a solo doing whatever they like! tomorrow morning (for me in australia) ill reread the thread and start listing people and their instruments to start sorting things out. ps you can never have too much cowbell

Great idea, kudos crazyfatkid. I'm devoid of recording options, otherwise I'd participate myself. Very interested to see how it turns out.

Wave files would be preferable to mix with, but 320mbps mp3s would be passable too (thinking about file transfer options - New Zealand doesn't have very fast internet compared to the rest of the western world, and transferring big .wav files will take a while). - Provide the sound and video files separately and in high quality to make a high resolution version; and together in low quality for an 'offline edit' as a reference for the video editor (not me, I suck at that...). - Don't do any of your own EQing (apart from the EQ settings you have on your instrument and amplifier), reverbs, delays, compression, fades or other effects processing yourselves - it's much easier for the mix engineer (me!) to apply that later. Just indicate if you think your contribution needs it. - Get all your levels right when recording - no clipping! Try to get your instrument to be peaking at around 0dB or Unity Gain. Between 0dB and +6dB is good, but no higher than +6dB. Have fun!

I'd be up for this, I could play some guitar and keyboard, although maybe just the rhythm parts guitar wise as my playing is a bit rusty, although a solo in the solo section wouldn't be out of the question ;).

I could do the drums but I don't have any mics, so it'd be from my not-so-great camera mic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3AzdNMXk0u8 That's my cover, let me know if it's near workable and I could give you the un-EQ'd version and it might sound better. Would love to do this!

I would do it, but I can't improvise...stupid classical training. I can play for the opening string part, and any little solos anyone can write and send me I would gladly tape for the middle section!

Hahaha. Do multiple takes with one item of clothing less each time, and edit it so that each clip I'm in seems like I took it off while playing. Nice. Full nudity for the last verse baby.

As far as I know, we`re also taught to improvise. And your idea of the opening part is interesting. It would be kind of the orchestral intro in the score dvd.

But can someone write parts to me, chords, little stuff that they want to add and I can play it?

I'd love to do some drums for this, but I don't have good recording equipment besides a camcorder, however I would say it's fairly decent, and I would love to be a part of something like this even if I only got a couple seconds in.

Soundchaser I'm gonna pass just cuz it looks like 100 different people will be on it....
