Hey forum! Let's cover Metropolis. Who's in??? - Sunday, March 07, 2010 3:40 AM
if this happens, it would be a cover of Metropolis Pt. 1 (BCSL Tour Version with extended middle solo section) (see download festival performance if you DONT know what i mean)

at this point in time, all those who would participate please post your instrument, from a choice of BASS, DRUMS, GUITAR, KEYS, VOCALS (people who play other instruments like violin, i know you're out there, YOU CAN POST TOO and have a solo in the solo section, but the sections of the original would be kept intact as per the cd)

basically we would split the original (Images & Words CD version) into segments (the unisons might be split bar by bar, while a verse might be left to be played by one person; and some of the chunkier riffs could be multitracked), and then people can choose a section to play their instrument for (bassists and drummers would probably end up with more parts than guitarists due to numbers). then we would slot in the middle solo section, which would involve everyone, with a long rotation of guitar, bass, drum, keyboard, vocal, kazoo, breakdance, anything solos. (Taffer, you can do a striptease ).

note: the instrumental playing should be competent people, as most of you are; but for vocals, anyone can take a vocal line and scream it (so in the final product we could have, for example) 10 people taking turns at each line of the first verse, no matter how terribly they sing/yell it)

we would need someone good with DAW/Movie making software, to put together a nice multi split screen youtube video; and to sew all the audio together. each member would need a webcam or better quality camera, and decent audio recording facility.

if none/some of this made sense ask questions etc etc etc etc

I can provide guitar parts. Been playing that song since forever, know it by heart, you can check a cover of me playing it here (although a lousy one considering our singer, but alas):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e53v8g9GTLg - the first 7 minutes

I have protools and all other means necessary for recording in good quality, i think i should be able to do it in a day or so if ya want me to. Cheers =)

I can play guitar, bass, drums and I love to sing a bit as well. But, unfortunately no recording software or camera. Oh, well back to the basement to practice by myself again.....

I can do the bass... although I never did learn the final unison. It would give me a reason to though, and I could give it a mix too. Portfolio on my website :)

Natt, female vocals would be awesome!

Johnny.Swift, if youre up for it, youve got the job!!! what im thinking is people would record (for the non-solosection parts) their parts along with the cd version, so you can put the CD version in your DAW, then sync everything up, remove the original, and mix things in and out. the hard part will getting the video together... well have to keep this very tidy and label all the files well!!

im sure anyone who wants to will be on this, so long as you can record yourself doing something. people who arent confident playing the original parts can have a solo doing whatever they like!

tomorrow morning (for me in australia) ill reread the thread and start listing people and their instruments to start sorting things out.

OK, lets do this. Wave files would be preferable to mix with, but 320mbps mp3s would be passable too (thinking about file transfer options - New Zealand doesn't have very fast internet compared to the rest of the western world, and transferring big .wav files will take a while).

- Provide the sound and video files separately and in high quality to make a high resolution version; and together in low quality for an 'offline edit' as a reference for the video editor (not me, I suck at that...).

- Don't do any of your own EQing (apart from the EQ settings you have on your instrument and amplifier), reverbs, delays, compression, fades or other effects processing yourselves - it's much easier for the mix engineer (me!) to apply that later. Just indicate if you think your contribution needs it.

- Get all your levels right when recording - no clipping! Try to get your instrument to be peaking at around 0dB or Unity Gain. Between 0dB and +6dB is good, but no higher than +6dB.

Have fun!

I'd be up for this, I could play some guitar and keyboard, although maybe just the rhythm parts guitar wise as my playing is a bit rusty, although a solo in the solo section wouldn't be out of the question ;).

I could do the drums but I don't have any mics, so it'd be from my not-so-great camera mic.

That's my cover, let me know if it's near workable and I could give you the un-EQ'd version and it might sound better. Would love to do this!

Hahaha. Do multiple takes with one item of clothing less each time, and edit it so that each clip I'm in seems like I took it off while playing. Nice.

What do you mean you cant improvise?? As far as I know, we`re also taught to improvise.

And your idea of the opening part is interesting. It would be kind of the orchestral intro in the score dvd.

Yes, I can add the opening, but I am only 16, and although I am a serious student, I have had no training in improvisation.

But can someone write parts to me, chords, little stuff that they want to add and I can play it?

I'd love to do some drums for this, but I don't have good recording equipment besides a camcorder, however I would say it's fairly decent, and I would love to be a part of something like this even if I only got a couple seconds in.

if you know what i mean by the version of metropolis, the solo section is just a static 2 note bass thing that leaves a lot of space in between bars. if youve learnt any paganini or any show-offy semiquaver-run style pieces all you have to do is play them in the right key!!

Oh god I would be so excited to do this....I can play Paganini (after lots of slow and labored practice :D) but I cannot for the life of me compose something like that.

KirksNoseHair has the same problem with me when I record violin for his album...my inability to improvise or compose gets in the way, I am so grateful to him for putting up with me haha.....

^ awesome! ill see about where to put other violin parts within the original song too, Score-style

Johnny.Swift, since so many drummers only have a video camera (cant blame them, 10+ mics and a mixer dont come cheap), can you do anything with camera-quality audio? some cameras sound is ok i think, its just that most tend to have auto-volume things that compress it, and the cymbal usually over-rides (see what i did there) everything else

Yeah I totally realise the amount of work :-)

Here's some old videos with a fair amount of layers and sync I did along time ago :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5soXaupESmA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC2_KnBulTE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lwUIAKc0vo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBwS3Z-wzkI

And I also did the multi-camera Gelsenkirchen DT video bootleg with all
the youtube videos, which was a crazy amount of work, with all the video qualities, and to synchronize all of that, took me about a week

Yeah I totally realise the amount of work :-)

Here's some old videos with a fair amount of layers and sync I did along time ago :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5soXaupESmA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UC2_KnBulTE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lwUIAKc0vo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBwS3Z-wzkI

And I also did the multi-camera Gelsenkirchen DT video bootleg with all
the youtube videos, which was a crazy amount of work, with all the video qualities, and to synchronize all of that, took me about a week

Woahhhhhh dude. woah. ive been thinking about doing that for sydney and never could bring myself to. you definitely have got the job!!!!!

ps where can i get that video bootleg?

i just watched your metropolis and the sound is way better than i expected from a camera... as Johnny.Swift said, he'll do all the mixing, so if you just get the best possible sound out of your drums you can it'll probably be sweet!

awesome! I'll experiment with camera positions to get the most un-nasty sound. Maybe  above, behind my seat so that only one cymbal isn't hogging the limelight.
and I'll do a strip too.

totally excited for this! nice one man.

So how are you thinking this would be passed around? Sorry if you mentioned it already. Seeing as everyone would have to be very well synced with one another, it seems like a good idea to set a tempo, and select someone to edit all the parts together. Obviously not everyone uses the same audio editing equipment, so there there would have to be someone doing the massive task. I would volunteer for it, the most simultaneous tracks I can do is 48 stereo with my protools LE 8 setup. Seems like that would be reasonable seeing as not all the people volunteering would be playing at the same time. I tend to be extremely good with editing things together, so I would love to try doing it.

^ everything except the solo section (which i will pick a static tempo for when the time comes - still planning it all!) will be recorded along with the CD version, so it will be all consistently tempoed. once we know how many people are in for solos etc, ill know how many bars the solo section goes for, and then how many bars each bassist/drummer should make the backing track.

as for mixing, Johnny.Swift has already stepped up to the desk, so to speak, but you might be able to work out something with him to share the workload if he needs help etc

at the moment, i just want anyone interested to post their instrument, and whether they will contribute a solo.

Just an idea: we could program a click track for this. I for one could do that real easy

if CD gets complicated somehow that is

itll be clicktrack for the solo section for sure, especially for the drummers/bassists who'd be making the backing track for others to solo over. im just thinking if people recorded their bassline/guitar part/etc over the original CD, they'd be keeping the exact same energy and feel as the CD.so in blending 50 peoples' different takes together it would make more sense and feel more unified i think

I play the drums and I have a basic 4 mics setup, but I think it sounds more than decent.

I would love to contribute to this!  I'm a guitarist, a vocalist, a [wannabe] keyboardist, and an iPhonist =D.  This song is well within my range to sing and I could even provide some back-up vocals as well.  I've learned the whole song on the guitar in pieces throughout the years, so tracking the whole song shouldn't be too much of an issue.  I'm not a shredder on the keyboards, but I could contribute some of the pads and strings.  I can also contribute a guitar, bebot, and perhaps even a flute solo for the extended break.  I have some decent audio and video recording equipment, so I can churn out some quality recordings from my home.  This sounds like a whole lot of fun!  The hard part is going to be finding the time to track my parts :p

If there's any room for another drummer, I could possibly play a part, lol. Though I only have a crappy camera to record with, so sound quality is very poor. Either way this sounds like it'll be really awesome.

I think we're going to need a nice time chart to keep track of everyone's section

And also I think the BC&SL tour metropolis w/ jam is about 15 minutes long, is that right ?

If you'll permit it, I'll lay down some c-blues improv on the clarinet. or does c sound too sad?
