The Throat of Winter
Tuesday, March 02, 2010 1:30 AM
( permalink)
I didn't want to hijack the Raw Dog threads so......... Overall I'm really digging this acoustic track! I have to believe that if this appeared on an Opeth album it would not end at 5:47! I'm checking out the time remaining and thinking "How the hell is this going to end? There's only 30 seconds left!" Akerfeldt always seems to write an awesome fingerpicking section. The keyboard at 3:33-3:39 reminds me of Octavarium for some reason. Frederik lays down some nice lead. Any thoughts?

I was kinda hoping it would be a more heavy track. I assumed it would be since it's for GOW and everything... But I like it a lot! The whole rhythm of it is different from MA's style I think. Very cool.

This song is fantastic. My favorite from the EP. But, hey. It's Opeth we're talking about, so this was to be expected.

Love it except I've never heard such loud string screech before while changing notes. My god it sounds like every time he changed chords it was put into an oscillation chamber and amplified. Very strange. It's a beautiful song though.

One of the most beautiful Opeth songs, but! i'm a little bit disappointed. Since the album is called Blood and Metal, I was expecting something heavier, growls, etc

The song will probably grow on me as I listen to it more, but yeah the ending is fantastic. Getting a very strong Al DiMeola vibe.

Best song on the soundtrack. I went in expecting death growls and was somewhat disappointed when there were none but this song is still great!

Watershed has some more "unusual" and acoustic-y stuff, which it sounds to me like the direction The Throat of Winter takes (still can't get the damn EP)

Yeah the keyboards at 3:40 sound very similar in tone to the break before Razor's Edge in Octavarium. Cool track, odd, quirky, but in a good way. Some tasty stuff within. Best on the EP I'd say seeing as I wasn't too keen on Raw Dog. String screech is on par with Roulette by System of a Down, I'd say.

Just listening now and the screech sounds very intentional. Using it as kind of an ambient background noise device, if that makes sense. I believe that's exactly what they wanted it to sound like. Anyway, really liking it. Of course, its Opeth and Mikael can really do no wrong in my book.

I can't seem to get enough of that outro. The riff, the solo....... I must admit I was wary when Frederik joined that there would be too much widdly diddly. But he has played tasty stuff while still displaying his chops. Though I really hope MA still continues to play some lead as I love his soloing, too.

I don't think that's MA shredding. Funny thing about Opeth.....I hated this band for such a long time, and now I can't get enough of their newer stuff. I still think their first 3 albums are black metal nonsense for the most part (and Deliverance does little for me), but I love the quirky new direction they're taking.

I haven't listened to it yet. I don't really have high expectations though. MA himself said it's "odd and not very metal" -- so...meh...

Omg, i was really pumped, but also a little disapointed when the song ended i felt like a whole 6 minute ending coulda been added- a metal ending, like acoustic beginning leading into the meat of a epic, METAL song...but it was still a good acoustic song :)

Wow, this is a GOOOOOOOOD song!
Wonderful! Time for a celebration... Cheese for everyone! Wait, scratch that. Cheese for no one. That can be just as much of a celebration, if you don't like cheese, true? I will admit I was a Opeth hater yesteryears. Couldn't get into Mikael's growls, and then those depressing chords. Something happened somewhere, because Opeth is really growing on me and this new track is absolutely a piece of art!

There's quite a bit in the middle of Porcelain Heart as well. But it's okay, as I agree with Devnoy. I think it makes the song even better (if just by a small margin).

I agree with both Coil and PH and actually enjoy both because they do sound very organic. However there is a section in the middle of the song where it appears to be amplified... probably on purpose for effect (though I have no frickin' clue) and during this section it impairs my ability to focus on anything else.

I don't think I like the guitar screeches when MA switches frets they're louder than the actual playing. It's a bit ridiculous. Beautiful song though.
