You Favorite Peter Gabriel Album of His 1st 5 - Friday, February 26, 2010 8:36 AM
Peter Gabriel's music has been dominating my listening time lately - PG 1 through So.  Almost tempting me to check out the Radio City show where you can buy a package to the show and get in on the soundcheck for a "mere" $540.   http://www.petergabriel.com/newblood/
PG 1 my favorite for some years, then Security, but as of late PG 3 really has had my attention.  There is some beauty in the darkness of this album.  His voice on this album is just awesome, and all the creepy sounds and disturbing themes of many of the songs.  Biko for me is a little hard to stomach, but everything else is just incredible.

I should be receiving the most recent remastered version of PG 3 in the mail soon, so I am looking forward to its sonic purity, having heard PG 2 remasterd recently, and being very impressed.

I don't know or remember why but when he and Genesis parted ways I never really went in his direction. There were other types of music that were
capturing my attention moreso, heavier stuff. I do have his greatist hits album and I listen to that from time to time but he's a guy whose solo
career has pretty much been looked over by me. I've probably missed some quality music.

I can't decide, it's either PG 1 or PG 3.

I voted for Security, with 3 a close second.

3, no question.  Spectacular from start to finish.  I also think it's the best produced.

"So" is the first one I ever got, and I got it back when it was released.   It was one of the first "clear" cassettes I ever got, when "white" cassettes started to be phased out.   The first 4, I didn't get till years leater although I did have the '45 for Shock The Monkey.  It's often regarded as being the most "accessible" of his albums, and that's probably why to this day I "access" it most often.

This easily goes to Security. III is great but Security is just too awesome for words.

3 - what a perfect album in my opinion.

I love the rest but 3 never gets old.

We'll still have her song to sing. Sing softly, bring me to the lake. Sing softly, sing me to the lake.

It alters between 3 & 4. Both are excellent. Right now Security is my favorite.

Impossible to answer.

I just cannot decide between 3 and 4.

But then again, 1 is a masterpiece. 2 is highly underrated - probably his worst but still a cracking record. 'So'? Beautiful album. They all hold their own...

I was originally going to say 3, as 'Family Snapshot' is my favourite PG track. However, there are classics on every disc. Nah. I could wonder about this all night. Not going to get anywhere.

So.

Not just because I'm a sucker for In Your Eyes (yeah, I know... how cliche ) ... love the whole album.

Gotta go with Us.  Blood of Eden is just fantastic and the Secret World Live set even improves on those album tracks and the older classics.

There's not a Peter Gabriel album I don't like. The man is a genius. The best thing he ever did was leave Genesis. I get to enjoy Genesis after he left and also get to have warm fuzzies over his solo work.

I put Ovo on this weekend and forgot just how good it is. Hard to believe it's 10 years old already.

Just for your interest my dear:
Gabriel's idea behind Scratch My Back was to cover songs by artists he appreciates. But this album is more something like a project than "just" a single release.
He talked to the artists he covered songs from beforehand he started working on Scratch My Back, since his intention with this project is that each of those artists is supposed to cover a Gabriel song in return. These songs are to be released on a album later in 2010 (Gabriel doesn't know himself up to now, when it will be released).
Unfortunately David Bowie didn't want to contribute a song in return for Heroes.
BUT since Heroes was written not by Gabriel alone, but by Gabriel and Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel asked Eno, if he wants to contribute a song on his part.
Long story short: Brian Eno will cover In Your Eyes for that project.

And by the way: There will be another cover album released by Gabriel in the future. But the next record will be one with songs Gabriel wrote.

On topic

That's tough...
Imo all of them are awesome, but II is a tiny, tiny bit weaker.
If I have to choose only one it's Melt.
But for me Melt, Car, Security and So are more or less equal awesome. And that'd be my order, if I'd have to give one...

I'm not a fan of anything this guy ever did, including early Genesis. I'd love to hear those early albums with a real singer like Phil Collins instead of someone who tried to sound like a combination sprite/court jester. Of course, that's the appeal to many fans of early Genesis so to each, his own.....I guess......

Only one I've heard is So and man does Red rain smoke. Awesome awesome song. I'll have to check out the others as well.

Cool for you, since getting into Gabriel is a very great journey!
I recommend you listening to I-IV in chronological order, when you listen to them for the first time(s).

Have fun!

My 2002 remastered copy of PG3 arrived from Argentina yesterday.  Sonic beauty.  Pristine, and all.

Moments of aural nirvana:

- 1:31 into No Self Control;
-  And Through The Wire - favorite Gabriel vocal representation throughout.

All of them)))
Wonderful! Time for a celebration... Cheese for everyone! Wait, scratch that. Cheese for no one. That can be just as much of a celebration, if you don't like cheese, true? You've run a maze like a good little rat. But no cheese for you yet. Well, maybe a little.
