This is pretty cool.  Was never much of a fan of A7X, but they kicked ass live.  Hopefully MP'll be able to play a handful of shows with them too, schedule permitting of course.

This is incredible and awesome, and I can't believe no one guessed it here, including me.  A7X stood out to me due to the drumming and interesting guitar riffs.  Really looking forward to hearing this.

Never listened to anything A7X, so not familiar with their music at all, but I'm sure Mike's gonna do a great job on it regardless.

 I`m a big fan of AVENGED SEVENFOLD and I was just shoked by The Rev`s death... He and MP are my favorite drummers of all times, and now one of them is dead, it is a time of great mourning for me. But MP is the only who can deal with AVENGED`s music, and I`m happy as I can be happy now. And my big thanks to MP for this...

Jimmy many times said that MP is his favorite drummers, and MP wrote that they were a friends. I think that it was the best choice for AVENGED.

I think the members of Avenged are more talented than they are given credit for. And Jimmy was no exception. Pheneomenal drummer who was really starting to gain some popularity.

I think it's a great thing for Mike to be asked, and it's a credit to Mike that he is willing to do it with such enthusiasm and respect. One of the few drummers who could do The Rev's drumming justice.

These guys are a true family and it is an incredibly emotional experience to be here with them for the first time without their lost brother. But they have welcomed me into the family with open arms and there's a real excitement to make the record they had set out to make...

I am treating my participation on this album with the utmost respect for Jimmy's memory and am remaining as true as possible to the drum parts that he wrote for the songs and the record he wanted to make.

I want their fans to realize that I'm not trying to step into or fill The Rev's shoes...I'm just merely lacing em up for him!

I always ASSumed from their image (and name) that they were some kind of Orange County Skate/Pop/Punk band (I assumed something like Blink 182 or Good Charlotte)....but then I saw one of their videos and I said "wow...these guys can play!"...so I picked up their new CD "City Of Evil" and was blown away!
 
I don't know the story on these guys...if it is trendy or uncool to like them, but these guys are great players!! (picture Paul Gilbert, Joey Jordison and Mike Patton putting together a pop/metal band!)
 
And they write some really cool, untraditional, almost proggy pop songs, but with catchy hooky choruses....I can't believe these guys are getting the commercial acceptance & exposure they are with a sound that sounds more like Iron Maiden meets DT than anything else that's currently on MTV!

I just checked out some of their music & I really like what I'm hearing.  "A Little Piece of Heaven" rocks!  Holy crap!  And I can totally hear MP's influence on The Rev's playing.  I'm really looking forward to hearing their new "masterpiece."

Sentence 2 is ok... first one... no way dude. Plenty of other musicians and drummers would do something like this. It speaking volumes to who Mike is does not take away from the other good people out there that care about others too. Let's be real here. Mike is part of a community, and there is a reason why he and plenty of others are proud of that community.

Thanks!  I'll check those out.   You answered my question before I even asked it.   I've only heard 2 songs by these guys-  Beast And The Harlot and Bat Country - c/o Sirius and MTV.  And I liked them but not enough to buy one of their albums.  I loved the twin lead guitar stuff - it always reminded me of Helloween or something.   Any other must-hear songs I should check out with impressive drumming?

Wow, this is definitely some cool news. MP is the man for doing this and he couldn't pay a better tribute to the Rev, one of his fans. I've been a fan of A7X for a while now and was pretty shocked when Jimmy passed. Mike is one hell of a fill-in.

Over the years they have changed quite a large amount.  SO if you like the hardcore kind of music then Waking the Fallen is you best bet, then sounding of the 7th trumpet after that.  And their latest album which is self-titled, is a whole 'nother ballgame, with a lot more musicality and kind of proggy ideas.  and City of Evil is the first album after the singers throat injury which is decent but never really hooked me. 

This is just so awesome.  Mr. Portnoy, I raise my glass of Mountain Dew Green Amp and toast you for such a heroic undertaking with this tribute of all tributes.  I am psyched as all hell to hear this record, best of luck to you and the members of A7X.

Whoa, I was crushed when i heard of the rev's passing; the thought that A7X could just... Vanish with his passing? But I kept reading the news on them and eventually had gotten this glimmer of hope that they would continue on without there brother.

And then to find out Mr. MP is Lacing up Jimmy's shoes for this album? All that came to me was amazement and joy.

but given your example i would DEFINITELY look into their self-titled album.  many great songs like "A Little Piece of Heaven," "Gunslinger," among many others.  Just checked their myspace and i feel none of the songs they have up are prime examples.

Well as said before MP was The Rev's favorite drummer so it's not that surprising.

I think the thing that truly makes this a touching moment in Rock history is that Mike was The Rev's favorite drummer.

That's just incredible in my eyes.

You know,

I've always looked up to Mike as a drummer. He's my biggest and most obvious influence because I grew up listening to the same drummers as he. Ringo, Keith Moon, so forth. But I've come on this forum off and on for a couple of years and I've come to admire Mike as a person.

It's no wonder Mike's one of the most respected people in the music industry not just by fans, but by peers as well.

To be honest I've never been an avenged seven fold fan.  The vocals were a real turn of for me along with the pop style.  I will definitely check out the new album though.  At the very least to hear how MP fits into that style of music.

Mr. P,  you've proven to me, yet again, why you are one of the most incredible people in the music world.  Music has no walls, and if I ever want to be a good musician, i need to do a little renovating.

Hardcore...ya know...like the genre (as opposed to SIIHP).  However, A7X was way more metalcore than hardcore.  These are two totally distinct genres.
