So sorry for your loss Mike!

Don't listen to anyone who says anything along the lines of "oh, it's just a dog."  Those who would say something like that have never known, and will never know, the joy and love a dog can bring.  Those who know are aware that a dog is more than an animal, it's a member of the family capable of receiving love and giving plenty of it back.  Ignore any insensitive people who think your loss is insignificant, they are ignorant and will never be capable of understanding, and know that you are justified in your grief and that it's OK to feel the way you do.

I say this because when I lost my dog 9 years ago, I was met with many comments like that from insensitive "friends," and I wish I could have had more support through my grief than I did.  Again, my thoughts are with the Portnoy family, and may the baby girl RIP.

I am so sorry to hear Mike. As a major animal lover myself my heart goes out to you.  Time is the only thing that eases the initial pain from losing a pet however they are never forgotten and they will live forever in your heart.

nooooo! I'm really crying...I'm not jocking...my dog died when I was just 8, while he was 6...I love dogs and every time I hear things like this I cry.

Awww Mike, I'm so sorry. Such a cute dog.

Although it's a pity when a dog dies, 14 years is a loong life for a dog. Everyone who has a dog which makes it that long should be grateful, what you surely are.

Loosing my dog Rebel 4 years ago was the saddest moment in my life, moreso than when my dad passed away. The next day I had to ride a bike tour for 100 miles and when I got into my car at 6:00 am to ride to the start of the MS Bike Ride, Pink Floyd's Dogs played on the radio. The barking in the middle is the exact sound that my dear Rebel would make when he barked, I cried all the way! 2 days later, At the end of the ride as I walked to my car to hang my bike, a Young couple with a dog that looked exactly like my Rebel were standing there. I felt Rebels spirit that whole weekend and still do to this day. Someone sent me this and it made me feel better, hope it does for you!
 
 
 
                            The Rainbow Bridge
 
Just this side of Heaven is a place called the Rainbow Bridge. When an animal
dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the
Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and
sunshine and our friends are warm and comfortable.  
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we
remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.  
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they each
miss someone very special, someone who was left behind.  
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body
begins to quiver. Suddenly, he breaks from the group, flying over the green
grass, faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your
special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to
be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again
caress the beloved head, and you look once more into those trusting eyes,
so long gone from your life, but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together...  
 

Something unrelated to the topic, but still:
I think it's very great how Mike interacts with the community and lets us take part in so many private things. This is something I never before saw anyone as well known as Mike do. This truly makes the difference. Hats off.

Almost 14 years is a long time.

Mike, consider yourself lucky of having enjoyed her company for all these years, you certainly are. I'm sure she'll take good care of all of you, her family, from wherever she is...Remember, dogs are men's best friend.

 This just make me sad :( I've lost a dog myself and the one we have now is pretty old as well. A dog is a familymember and it's always terrible to loose a pet.

 The spirit carries on, Bongo!

Oh, Mike, I am SO sorry for you and your family to have lost sweet little Bongo. I'm sick with sadness for you.

I'm so sorry... It must be terrible to lose someone so close. Luckily I haven't felt that myself.

Major +1.  That is an awesome pic.  I have one of me and my dog Stella very similar to that taken just a couple of days before she died 9 years ago.  I truly feel your pain and am thinking of you today.

So sorry Mike for your loss.  I actually saw you at the BTB&M show last night, then I came home and a couple of hours later my own dog got pretty sick.  Very odd.  He went to the bathroom in the house, #2, three times between 3am and Noon today, which he nevers does and he threw up today twice as well.  We took him to the vet and it just seems to be a random bug, and he should be ok...maybe he was trying to take away some of the pain from Bongo.

Dogs are so amazing.  I'm sure those were 14 wonderful years.

I´ve always had at least 2 dogs for all my life (35 years) and everytime they pass I´m totally devastated. I´m glad you got 14 years with this beautiful dog, in dogyears that´s about 98 so you can rest assured that she got a full life. Celebrate her memory
