For the past 2 days I have become immersed in the music of Kevin Gilbert and have come to the conculsion that he was a TRUE genius. I had heard the name "Kevin Gilbert" before but never knew his music or his life story or tragic death (actually, angra's avatar promted me to finally check out his stuff).

Where have I been and what have I missed!!!! What breathtaking, incredible music this guy put out! I am now perusing the internet looking for pieces of information about Kevin Gilbert. It has been a long time ago that a musician had such an inpact on me and I'm positive that he would be huge today if he hadn't died (way too early, like so many others...)

I guess it's a strong statement but with some luck he could have been the next Freddie Mercury or certainly the next Peter Gabriel! I encourage you, if you like sophisticated, introspective neo-prog with a bit of pop tossed in - or just plain good music, do check out KG! The guy was one of a kind.

          paging angra1...
After you check out Gilbert's solo stuff (Thud, Shaming of the True), make sure you check out Toy Matinee. Another one of his masterpieces. A master songwriter who was taken from us to soon.

I hate to admit I am not familiar with to much of Gilberts music and really only became aware of his awesomness after listening to the solos he lent to Neal Morse with his colaboration in Sola Scriptura. The solo near the end of 'The Door' is as masterful as any ever recorded by anyone. I need to put some more effort into exploring his music.

Well, I was basing my judgment on the number of listeners he has at last.fm which is about 3000 as opposed to half a million DT listeners.. I'm sure there are some people around here who have no idea who he is.

You may not have heard a note he PLAYED but you most definitely have heard a note or more that he has WRITTEN. One of the best songwriters ever to walk the earth.

                              Love me some Kevin Gilbert.

Has anyone picked up the Nuts and Bolts albums?  I need to get these.

Thud and Shaming are both masterpieces, IMO.  Guy was just a gifted, gifted artist.  What I wouldn't give to have heard Falling Into Infinity with him at the helm.  Or him singing for Genesis.

                              Tragic loss way too young.

My album of the year for 2009.  And with all the great stuff that came out last year, that's SAYING SOMETHING.

                                Absolutely essential stuff.

                                      BUMP

This stuff is addictive!!! I have to make sure so as to not overplay it..... idk, on one hand it is kind of "accessible" (meaning I've heard it first time two days ago, but seems like I've known it for all my life) on the other hand it's fresh and unique and....deep! Man, this is quality music.....

One question to those who know.. I've read somewhere that KG left at least 5 CDs worth of material.. does that mean we can expect more KG releases in the future??

And another one: It seems TSOTT was released on vinyl in limited numbers. Is this true? I guess no-one has an idea where I could find one of those other than eBay, right???

Shaming never was released on Vinyl. There's a chance it will be eventually. It was released with a limited edition book that had expanded artwork/libretto.

Nuts/Bolts included a percentage of the unreleased work. 5 CDs worth? I'm not sure. I suppose between a lot of demos, re-arrangements and things, certainly.

There's still a fair amount of recordings that were not on Nuts/Bolts, although some of that is from the NRG and early Giraffe period.

Jon Rubin has stated that the next thing the estate would be looking at releasing is the Toy Matinee Roxy show. But pretty much any and all things that they put out will be driven by how well the sales of the Nuts/Bolts and Live at Troubadour CD/DVD sales go.

OK, but I've found a few search results on Google that said there would be an early 2009 vinyl release of TSOTT.... so this was  cancelled/postponed then?

Also: The Live at the Roxy was actually released as a promo on vinyl in very limited numbers, is this correct??

EDIT: Ordered the Live at the Troubadour CD/DVD yesterday!

no, the Shaming Vinyls were just mentioned as asomething the estate was looking/planning to put out.

Also,"The Shaming Of The True" is remastered and re-released on CD as of this writing. The cool new thing (especially for audiophiles) is the 2-LP version of this release. That's right. Looking at a very

12" x 12" book, all the artwork in frame-ready prints, and much more!

The Toy Matinee Roxy show never was officially released in any capacity. Promotional items may have been sent out, and it's a well circulated bootleg, but the fact it never was released (or fully mastered) is 1 of the reasons why the estate and many fans want it to be released. Also the fact Toy Matinee did very little touring, i.e. not many people ever got to see them.

I already liked this album, but I think he generally made it better by skipping the extraneous parts.

yeah but he used to play it all the time, all by himself at home (what Giraffe did? or even including the bits they skipped) . I recall 1 account of him having done it at least 100 times.

                                                      bump.

I was reminded of the drawing for The Power of Suggestion when I found one show up on ebay the other day.

the deadline for sending in entries for the drawings is on Wednesday March 31st. But does that also mean the drawings will take place soon thereafter? I'm not sure why they wouldn't. If they have to be postmarked by March 31st, I'd think the drawing would take place within that next week.

                                                      http://www.popplusone.com/kgjoytown.html

And here is the kicker. We are going to give away 10 original copies, signed by Kevin, of the unavailable Giraffe CD, Power Of Suggestion. Kevin signed an unknown number of these CDs, each with a different little message, before they were shrink wrapped. To enter this drawing you must use the original entry certificate, one of which is included in each Welcome to Joytown - Thud Live at the Troubadour package. You can enter as many times as you have certificates to do so. No entires will be accepted postmarked later than March 31st, 2010.

this is very cool! in some ways I'd rather have one of those books more.

Probably in 2 weeks as Kevin has fans in very distant places. I'm actually hoping for a book myself, but the Giraffe CD on the other hand is SIGNED!!!

                                                            We'll see....

I mailed my ticket out this morning along with a SASE. I really hope to get the ticket back as it's a cool collectible. Of course if I get a signed Giraffe CD or a SotT book to go with it then all the better!
