5 mile walk at quite a fast pace for most of it today for March for (dimes) Babies! This is a March for Dimes event but it's all about pre-mature babies. My daughter was born 6 weeks 1 day early and spent 26 days in the NICU. We are friends with quite a few parents from our time in there with our daughter. So every year we do the 5 mile walk. This was our 2nd year!

I was going to do Kenpo tonight but I never did stretch this morning or even a few mins into the walk and so yeah I'm pretty sore. So I'll do Kenpo tomorrow to close the door on Round 2 Week 1! BRING IT!

I had an Epic Diet Fail all day yesterday, thankfully not the weekend. But I'm back on track today so I'm not worried. After the extremely stressful last half of the week, I got laid off Wed, I just had to finally get it out yesterday so I said screw it!

But I haven't stopped working out and I refuse to quit!!!

I got the bad day of eating out of my system yesterday. I won't fall into the trap of doing it multiple days in a row again like I would have in the past. I've been dead on my eating today and it will stay that way. I am determined to lose 100 lbs before the end of the year and that still remains the goal and I will get there!

That P90X looks quite good (saw a couple of Youtube videos showing transformations, and some are quite impressive).

Currently 4 weeks back into it after a year off. Got my bench press up back to 70kg for 6 full reps earlier. Happy with that considering how long it has been! :D

I'm not sure I could do it to be honest. I had a clot in my leg a few years back and it still hurts when doing cardio (even running when I play soccer). Bit gutted but I can still go and lift heavy! :D

Tom... I'm here to tell you that you CAN DO THIS. They show you ways to modify it, there is a dvd that is just devoted to stretching as well. I've seen people who had a lot worse health issues than you could imagine that did a few rounds of this and modified and now they are in the best shape of their lives and their health problems are GONE. I mean obviously talk to your Doctor but I know ANYONE can do this program if they modify modify modify. I have modified since Day 1 and still do to this day. But if you look at me on Day 1 and compare to now, I've come a LONGGGGG way!!! So you can you don't think you can... I say YOU CAN!

Anyone miss me?

I've had some crazy times the last couple weeks. I haven't been to the gym in nearly three weeks. Had a nasty sinus infection, two crazy workload classes in school right now and a system implementation project I am leading that goes live next week. No excuses, I know...epic fail. Diet has been pretty bad, too.

The good news is that the project is almost over, which will allow me the time to get back to the gym. I am going to try to get there Friday morning because I miss it terribly, but we'll have to see what the schedule allows.

I feel better just typing that out. Looking forward to a good sweat!

I'm tempted to try the P90X (i have a friend who owns the whole system and never uses it), but i need to prove to myself that i can stick w/a workout program before i dive into something that hard core.

That said, today was my 4th day in a row of workouts this week.  Since i started back up, i've been doing 1 day, then rest, then 1 day, then rest, etc.  This week, i felt inspired and have done 4 in a row.  I alternated cardio and weight days.  I'm still struggling to fill the time during the weights days, but i can usually get around 30-35 minutes in, along w/30-40 minutes on cardio days.

Just finished my protein shake and i'm feeling really tired but good about myself.

K, another noob question.  This is regarding the whole "losing weight vs. toning muscle" issue.

Ideally, i'd only want to lose weight around my midsection.  I'm not fat, and i don't have a beer gut, but my stomach isn't flat.  That's the only area i'm worried about.  However, i know that i can't just go do 1000 crunches per day and instantly have 6-pack abs.  I have to lose weight from all over first, right?

Thing is, my cousin is also trying to get in shape before summer, and she's rail thin.  The only part of her that isn't toned is her belly.  Does she still have to lose weight before toning, even if she's super skinny to begin with?  How does that work?

This is my first time checking in on this thread.

I have also embarked on the P90X mission!

My wife and I have just begun week 4, and we're not really noticing much of a difference, really. We are both in pretty decent shape though, I should say. And we haven't been sticking to the diet plan, either. But to be honest we eat pretty well anyway, with the occasional chinese food buffet, lol.

I am pretty happy that my chest and arms have gotten firmer, at least. But I have not lost ANY weight. I'm 5'10'' 190 lbs.  Pretty muscular though.... 34" waist.

Hopefully I can get down to 175, and I'll see my six pack that I have not seen since freshman year of college. Good luck everyone and keep it up.

Aredore - you are inspiring me! you WILL lose your 100 lbs. Even you avatar is P90X!!

Hwangman - Anyone can do P90X and let me just give you a little nudge here. I am the king of starting and not sticking to something, especially when it comes to working out at home. But I can't describe it, there's something about P90X that sucked me in BIG TIME. I've turned my back room into my own personal gym. If you start it I think you'll stick to it!

DTman - Put the scale away, if you're in decent shape you most likely won't see a lot of weight loss until weeks 6-9. That's why they say it is very important to take pics on Day 1, 30, 60 and 90. You'll likely see more results in the pics rather than on the scale. A big guy like me saw it in both places. But you know I was the opposite, saw the weight loss but didn't see the body change. Once I took the 30 day pics and compared to day 1, I saw it. Put the scale away until days 30, 60 and 90 and take your pics, this is key :)

Now for all you P90X freaks, have you heard about Shakeology? 70 healthy ingredients in one shake and it tastes AWESOME! Best thing I've ever added to my list of supplements. If you need more info, send me a msg on here and I'll send you a link to a video that tells you all about it.

Also, if you haven't tried the P90X Recovery drink, that's something you should definitely use. I take it after every workout except Yoga and Kenpo.

Keep it up people! and yes I *WILL* lose 100 freaking lbs and more. I'm on a mission!!! BRING IT!!!

Hwangman - on the abs. Well you definitely need to lose "the cage" to get the abs to really stick out. But you also need to do an ab program of some sort, for example P90X has Ab Ripper X. But the thing is, do NOT do abs everyday is what Tony tells us in P90X because we don't work every part of the body everyday.

Thanks, but how does that work?  If i'm in decent shape everywhere and my stomach is my "worst" area, how do i get rid of it?  Do i just keep doing a ton of cardio w/ab-specific exercises thrown in every few days or what?  Same deal w/my cousin...she's gonna look anorexic if she loses any more weight, but it sounds like she has to in order for her to get her stomach all toned?

I'm no expert I just know what I've learned from P90X and what I've seen from the Insanity program as well. P90X has a 17 min workout that is all about Abs, so maybe you and your cousin could do that 3 times a week or Tony Horton has some One on One workout dvd's that are just Abs only that are like $20 I think. Msg me if you're interested and I'll get you the link. I just know that he stresses to not do Abs every single day. But there are people that are in killer shape and they do the entire P90X program and there are 2 versions, Classic and Lean. The more in shape people usually follow the Lean version and when weights are involved they use lighter weights to tone more than go for size. I still think if you did P90X for 90 days you'd both get the Abs you wanted and the rest of your body would look killer!

Yeah, i may have to give that a shot.  I could probably use a little toning in my arms, so i could do lighter weights for a while.  More than anything, though, i just want to work on the abs.  I want to do another 4 weeks of regular workouts so that my body is used to the routine and then move into something more extreme.  P90x looks crazy.

Oh, and i woke up early today and decided to get in another day of workouts, so i ended up doing 5 straight days this week, which is a LOT for me.  Don't know if i can keep it up, but it felt good.

Is there some sort of incentive for you if someone buys P90x thru you?  Just curious...

William ... yes you can become a "Coach" where you can help motivate and keep others accountable and they can buy their beachbody.com products through you and yes you get commission. And it's for ALL beachbody.com products and supplements. HUGE news this week as the American Diabetes Association has now fully endorsed every single beachbody.com product and the Coaching Network! We're on a mission to change lives and that's what I'm trying to do not only with my own first but through my changes and pictures, trying to inspire others as well! Anyone can sign up as a Coach but you've got to have that burning fire inside to really be a Coach and yes you can make money at the same time!

Massive shoulder workout this morning. Pain!

I weighed in for the first time in a few weeks, and was actually expecting a bit worse than what I saw, so that was nice. I have been re-focused and ready this week!

It's all to do with diet and cardio. The abdominal muscles are like any other muscle group and should be trained once (at maximum twice) every week. They need time to recuperate and grow just like any other muscle group. Also, you do actually use your abs for many other movements such as squats and deadlift. It's very easy to overtrain them. All I do is a crunch movement and a lifting movement for my lower abdominal muscles.

But there is no point in putting hard work into your abdominal training if you have a layer of fat covering them up right? So you need to burn that off with your cardio. Best thing to do is do it in the morning on an empty stomach - have two glasses of warm water, then do some intense cardio. I personally think cycling is the best form of cardio to do, but I guess it differs from person to person. As you are doing it on an empty stomach, your body doesn't have any food to get it's energy from, so it will burn your fat.

How many carbs do you eat a day? You need to really monitor them well if you have any hope of attaining visible abdominal muscles. Have more of them in the morning, and slow the carb consumption right down during the day. I think the golden rule is no carbs after about 17:00PM. Obviously you don't want to cut them out altogether, that would be silly as you need them for a well balanced diet. I generally tend to get mine from fruit and vegetables. Jacket Potatoes are a good source. Stay well away from pasta, white rice and white bread. They will only bloat you. Go easy on the oats as well.

If you feel cutting out the carbs is making you feel tired and you really aren't getting along with it, then eat some essential fats for extra energy. I get mine from a variety of Nuts - Pecan and Maccadamia are my favourite.

Good look with losing that midsection fat.

Oh, and do some vacuums every now and again. Those are awesome for knocking inches off your waist.

I have to disagree with this...

Now, I am sure there are many viewpoints and I can only say that for ME...food in the morning is the most important thing you can do.  Especially if you are going to do cardio.

To say that there is no food in your stomach so your body is going to burn fat is a bit misleading and not entirely true.  Your body uses your stored fat for energy in some circumstances but your body muscle is also a source.  If you want to start burning off your own muscle do loads of cardio with no food in your stomach...trust me, as an ultra-runner I battle with this constantly.

Spike...I agree with every other point you made...I just want to add another viewpoint on the "breakfast, or no breakfast" discussion.

This is, of course, just another viewpoint...so please everyone, do your own research and "listen" to what your body tells you.
"Be careful.  You're a man who makes people afraid, and that's dangerous."

"It's what people know about themselves inside that makes em' afraid."

I disagree with no food in your stomach and working out on an empty stomach. Your body typically starts burning lean muscle and not true fat is what I've always heard. What I do is eat a small handful of raisins, then work out 15 mins later. This way it's eating away at the raisins/sugar and not my lean muscle.

X-Stretch this morning, keep it up all! BRING IT!

Taking Tues/Thurs off this week as I get back in the swing again. Don't want to go too hard the first week, as I've done that before and lived to regret it.

For my cardio, it is first thing in the morning, empty stomach. Not saying that is the best way, but its what I have to do because I can't eat right after I get up, and I go to the gym at 5:00AM. I'm always willing to try new things, so if anyone has an even somewhat definitive answer on this, please share!

Don't get me wrong WM, I would never train with weights on an empty stomach. I just prefer doing cardio first thing in the morning before I have eaten. I find having some warm water gives me the energy I need, and I'm always looking forward to breakfast when I get back. Personally I have found the best results doing it this way, but nobody is the same.

I suppose at the end of the day, it all depends on what the rest of your diet and training plan is. Luckily for me, I find I can burn fat easily training this way - plus, I don't really lose my muscle mass. But then again, I have quite a high protein intake.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. To me, the beauty of training is there is no wrong or right way - it's all about experience and trial and error. You have to experiment with different techniques to see what gets the best results.

Like I said earlier, small handful of raisins, wait 15 mins, then workout. I used to do the empty stomach until my friend gave me the raisin suggestion, it works great!!!

Thanks.  I've been going 4-5 days per week lately, and i alternate between cardio and weights.  I don't know what the vacuum exercises are.  I'll start doing some crunches once or twice a week, though, maybe after my usual workouts.

I'm sure a big part of my problem is diet.  When i was working out last year, i started keeping a food journal, but i got lazy w/it.  Money's tight between my wife and i, so as much as we'd like to always shop at the local Whole Foods and get the really healthy stuff, it's not an option.  We will get burritos from the local place once per week, but we usually eat in the rest of the time, and we have stuff like pasta, raviolis, tacos, etc.  Neither of us enjoy cooking, so it's hard to get super motivated to try out a bunch of recipes.  For now, it looks like i'll just have to worry about working out since we're not likely to revamp our food situation any time soon.

A food journal is a really good idea. Try and get back into doing that if you can - just get that motivation back! I find you don't have to spend loads to have a well balanced, decent diet. Obviously having extra $$$ does help though. One of the big problems is finding a bag of pasta, having nothing else to eat in the house, and not being bothered to walk to the shops to get something else. Trust me, I've been there and done that! Getting that initial level of motivation is hard work, but once you grasp it it just becomes second nature. For me, the hardest part was cutting out things like biscuits and chocolate bars. Snacky shit.

I'll have to get back into keeping the journal current and seeing how many calories i'm averaging per day.  The wife and i were just trying to figure out some healthier meals, but we're at a loss.  Like i said, we both hate cooking, and by the time we're both home at night, we don't want to spend 30-60 minutes cooking, plus have a bunch of dishes to clean afterwards.  We need something that takes 10 minutes maximum to cook and is super healthy, which i've never encountered.

I snack a LOT during the day too, so i need some healthy stuff.  I always have fresh fruit around, as well as pita chips and some 90 calorie Special K bars.  Thing is, i need a bunch in order to stay satisfied...after snacking, i'll give myself 20 minutes or so to let the food hit my stomach, but i'm usually still starving after that.  Bummer.

Slept in late today so i skipped the gym.  I did some crunches and some reps w/weights here at the apartment, but no 30-40 minute session like usual.  I felt guilty today, so i'm sure i'll be back at the gym tomorrow.  Trying to keep going 4-5 days per week as long as i can...it's annoying but satisfying.  Only thing is that i thought i'd see more progress by now.  I think this is my 6th week of going on a regular schedule, and aside from a little more bulk in my biceps, i don't see much difference.  That said, i haven't been doing any abdominal exercises until now, so i think i'll focus more on those than on weights over the next month and see how that works for me.

^^ Way to go man! You are kicking all kinds of ass, dude!

Thanks! Long way to go but I'm VERY happy with the progress so far with it being not even mid May. I know it's going to get harder to lose weight at some point so I'm pushing it hard now to do my best! :)

Cool session this morning

I am currently increasing the cardio, hoping to get back to the old mix of weights and cardio
